  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lenses for red raven

My opinion is that the sigma 18-35 is a no brainer for this camera. I also love my contax zeiss lenses on my scarlet which is 4k and similar crop. I would love to add the 15mm zeiss zf, but it is priced quite high. I currently use the 14mm rokion, but try to not use it unless I have to as I don't think it renders as nice as the other lenses.

I would love something in the 12-14mm range under f2, but I know that is not going to happen, zeiss ultra prime would be my dream lenses( I know, its not going to happen on raven) as I do love to shoot wide emmaunuel lubezki type shots.

i still have a hard time deciding btwn the sigma 18-35 and the canon 16-35 L mkii
canon because it compliments my 70-200 and its slightly wider
sigma because its fast and there are some reports of it being parafocal
any opinions greatly appreciated.

as far as the crop factor and a 19mm leica, its still wide, its basically the standard wide youd get in a set of super speeds, its weird to me people think its not wide because they are relating it to a 5d size sensor, cinema has always been s35 sized gate and the basic wides were 16mm in standard speeds, 18 in super speeds, and standard range zoom started at 18mm, like a 18-100mm cooke.

A lens that should be taken into consideration is the Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS.

It's cheap, not quite as fast as 1.8, but also not slow at 2.8, has a good range and has IS. It's a popular lens known for good resolution in its class.

I have been playing around with 4k on my Dragons and Canons- When Raven alights areal good travel set would be-

14cn e
16-35is
24cn e
28is
35ef (new one improves it- worth the cash)
40 2.8 killer baby lens
50cn e
70-200is

I was thinking the same thing. I'm planning on building a set of Elmarit and Summilux lenses to cinevise but I can't seem to find a wider solution. 19mm Elmitar is the widest that I can viably obtain (15mm is ~$6-7k and rare), and with the crop factored in it's around a 35mm?

It would be certainly be nice to have that wide ability when I need it for narrative work.

The Leica R 15mm Super-Elmar f3.5 is worth considering too and go for ~$2k.

I had the Canon zooms recently on a feature and I really hated them. They have a clear vignette, not a coverage issue, but a light fall off throughout the whole zoom range. also they clearly lose light as you zoom in. At least 1/2 a stop. They are not a 2.8 throughout despite their claims...
And the flairs... Terrible ENG like flairs. It looks like the lens has way too many elements...

I'm having my set of Canon FD lenses converted to Canon EF mount. I like the older lens designs and coatings more than the modern ones. I also prefer a manual iris ring. Really wish the 35mm was f1.4, but I can live f2. Here is what a complete set looks like (minus the 17mm f4):

14mm f2.8 L
20mm f2.8
24mm f1.4 L
28mm f2
35mm f2
50mm f1.2 L
85mm f1.2 L
100mm f2
135mm f2
200mm f2.8

you know thats interesting about that, back in the day when i would shoot super16 with the canon zooms, like the 8-64, it was hard to tell in camera, but when we would get to telecine it would be clear that they got darker as we were on the long end of the zoom, though the lens said it was a 2.6 the whole way…
and weirdly enough now their cine lenses are doing the same thing…but even weirder, their still lenses DONT do that, they just dont hold focus through the zoom range, haha, cant win.

I would love to know if the Veydra's have a big enough image circle to cover Raven... Better still, if the Veydra Anamorphics do.

Some info from another forum regarding the Veydras:

"The 25mm & 35mm have an image circle of 31mm. The 50mm has an image circle of 33mm. And it's speculated that the 85mm will also have a large image circle to easily cover S35. However the 12mm & 16mm are a bit smaller with images circles of 24mm & 26mm respectively."

interesting, they dont make these with an EF mount though, or do they offer it?
too bad they dont make a light weight zoom!

I dont think the Veydras were designed with same flange length as RAVEN....meaning...not sure if they could ever work...

Veydra Mini Primes were designed for MFT and more recently E-Mount.

Would be perfect if Raven was MFT mount

Great lens for the price and they have a variety of focal lengths

Mike Anamorphic would be better on a GH4 than Raven due to the Sensor Height

It would be cool to see a 5K version that can crop to MFT 4:3 to take advantage of the Height and would produce a better Anamorphic Image than a GH4 plus RAW/ProRes

OH right, it actually slipped my mind that they're mFT only (I think of them as "S16 primes" and keep forgetting the mount.)

As for Ana; I'd take Dragon, even limited to 2160pixels in height, over GH4 4:3 any day... Alas, it looks like no dice regardless...

I would get....

Tokina 11-20 T3
Sigma 18-35 T2 -OR- Canon 16-35 T3

The Sigma and Tokina can be Cinevised and Rehoused by GL Optics which would be the way to go. Also lets you swap mounts on the lenses which is great.
