  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lenses for red raven

You may rent them, but they won't fit on the Raven ;-)

That was more of an answer to a "buy your lenses" mindset that zones out expensive glass for Raven shooters. On a sidenote, I do think that RED should release a PL version of the thing.

Okay...

Guys, don't fight.

Here is the perfect lens set for raven.

Link: https://vimeo.com/138921794

It's just perfect lens for everyone.

P.S: I am not sure that 25mm 2x anamorphic lens can be perfectly viewed on Raven Sensor, but theoretically, M43 sensor won't have a problem.

In this case, your focal length on this lens set will be.

35 x2 = 17.5 x1.75= 30.625 in FF format.

50 x2 = 25 x 1.75 = 43.75 in FF Format.

70 x2 = 35 x 1.75 = 62mm in FF format

I am not sure weather I calculated this currectly.

Also, I heard that there will be x1.33 version too. It means, you don't crop your sensor from Raven, and use your full sensor with x1.33 to create such as

70mm x1.33 =52mm x 1.75 = 92mm

If Raven can be used in both mode- it's because the sensor size is in between them. You might get

30mm

42mm

62mm

92mm

Single lens cost you $3000 each and you will have niceeeeee anamorphic look.

total cost of the lens set of 5 2x(35mm, 50mm) and x1.33 (35mm, 50mm, 70mm) = about $12000

and you will get anamorphic lens set (It's new, not the used one)

you will get a length of between 30mm - 92mm. I think it's sweeeet lens set. How do you think about these?

- P.S: YOU CAN INTERCHANGE THE MOUNT FROM PL-EF-F MOUNT FREELY - AND THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING!!
Also, This is a theoretical idea that I am not really sure you can actuall use x2 lenses on Raven yet.

hijacked thread - ideal prime focal length for Raven cinematography

So did anyone ever answer the original question? LOL
Assume goal is wide, full, medium, close-up, etc.
Some cinematographers limit f stop to slowest lens so no (or minimal) relight on lens swap.

To generalize, what would be ideal set of Primes for Raven? (in Lens focal length ignore crop factors; should be roughly same as for ScarletX since sensor size is with a few %)
First by focal length choices and then specific instances?
What I am using is:
14mm T3
35mm T1.5
50mm T1.5
85mm T1.5
135mm T2

All Rokinon cine (budget oriented).
Have not heard great things about Rokinon 24 else would have that also
Also have wide zoom Canon 16-35 L series f2.8 - some CA (correctable) compared to Rokinon

I think are PL only
In the web some said "Made a mistake at 1:08. We meant the PL mount could be adaptable to E-mount, micro four thirds, or EF."
He think PL can adapt to EF, but like russion optics, he said me probably, but until no ones confirm then vapour

Thank you, Im still waiting for a solution for my question, Prime for wide and low light, cinema quality (so not photo - still lenses)
I think we might ask for Jarred for a PL fixed, or to Phil Holland for Scarlet Weapon confirnation, so I can tell my bombv squad to save my reserve of raven for raven fix PL or .. Im not sure if will be better to loose my reserve and say no to raven (of course not for scarlet at 15K brain) so say bye our Red Dream

Does anyone know the precise image circle for the Veydras? I'm not so sure they'll cover the Raven...

In answer to Tony's question, you're going to be hard put to find a prime in the 10-20mm range that is faster than T2.1. Even Zeiss Ultra Primes that cost $22K per lens are only a T1.9. The Canon's are all T1.5 except the 14mm that is a T3. Good luck finding what you're looking for, and for an affordable price at that (if you're buying a Raven instead of a Weapon, I'm assuming you're not down to spend $22K on a lens).

Like someone said before, Veydra seem to have been specifically designed for Raven.. Mft and soon e-mount, does someone know how these lenses compare to Zeiss Cp2 ?

NO. From what I understand, Veydra's cannot be mounted on RAVEN. Not just because they're not made in EOS mount - it's that they CAN'T. Have wrong Flange length, no?

I think the Sigma 18-35 1.8 will be very popular (both standard and GL/AllStar mods).

As will the Rokinon 16 T2.

And the Tokina 11-16 should get a lot of love too!

I completely agree. Though I can't abide Rokinons, I plan to get a Sigma 18-35mm and a Tokina 11-16mm would be great for the occasional super-wide. (also have to note the awesome quality of the GL mods)

But the OP is asking specifically for cinema glass--he said he's not interested in photography lenses.

Dont worry. I think we will see many new lenses with canon mount to come out until February. Company's know that Raven will be out and it's opportunity for them to make some serious money. :-)

Ultra primes are not 22K, ultra primes are about 12K
Other FF lenses 4K to 7K are in the ballpark but no one is wide sub 2.1

This means you cannot make interviews with raven and/or wide low light shoots

And what about Leica R Cine-Mod from Duclos? They have normal Canon EOS mount. They would be great for Raven, don't they?

You can always rent whatever you want and those CP.2s are dirt cheap as a rental. Raven crowd won't be mounting Masters on their cameras for sure, but even Ultras are a good match, you can rent those too.
Renting is always an option, sure. But as soon as you are going to rent something, you are making different choices compared to owning lenses. What you'll rent will way more depend on your budget for that one particular job, the people you are working with and those who pay. But as soon as you have a proper budget to rent something, you'll probably have enough budget to rent a EPIC/WEAPON too. I think the situations where your budget allow you to rent some expensive cinema-lenses but not a EPIC-body will be pretty rare.

I see RAVEN way more as an owner-camera for individuals, people that mostly own their lenses and people that want to work independently from the rental-business.

When i switch my Scarlet/Dragon from 5k to 4k i just realize that the discussion about RAVEN's different needs for a different set of lenses is a bit exaggerated. In general i wouldn't say we have to start from scratch. What works great on EPIC/SCARLET will work great on RAVEN.

Don't make your brains hurt with math and search for lenses that "replace" a focal length. This logic is just one little piece of the puzzle, one aspect of the look and not the one and only reality. Your camera won't be glued to one spot, you are not forced to have the exact same fov as you would have on S35 or bigger. A few steps back and you are back in frame, in most cases that will be enough...

Lots of great lens-tests here in the forum and everywhere. Read them, they all apply to RAVEN too. Only people with the special need to shoot at the widest end have to search for "new" options.

Don't forget, shooting film is art and not math.

My favorite so far is Carl Zeiss cp.2 15mm t2.9 but something tells me that new Rokinon Xeen will be 16mm t2.2 and that will be the winner as my first lens for the Raven. :)

If you want that focal length as prime, then get the Zeiss and don't bother with Rokinon. Revised Xeen version with improved coatings or not, the Zeiss is in a different league and simply one of the best performing UWAs. This and the 135mm can be considered as predecessors for their Otus-Line.

Edit: And don't forget, Zeiss covers FF (maybe even VV-8k) while Rokinon's 16mm-lens is for APS-C.
