  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lenses for red raven

I had the Canon zooms recently on a feature and I really hated them. They have a clear vignette, not a coverage issue, but a light fall off throughout the whole zoom range. also they clearly lose light as you zoom in. At least 1/2 a stop. They are not a 2.8 throughout despite their claims...
And the flairs... Terrible ENG like flairs. It looks like the lens has way too many elements...

Optimo's do the same thing (get darker at the end) or at least the 12x does. Ive never heard anybody complain about it or even mention it.

UPDATE: As for this long discoussion current options in Cinema lenses with fast aperture and wide are:

CINEMA QUALITY:
Optimo Style 16-40 cinema about 17K so too much for this camera
ULTRA PRIMES: Does not work (about 12-14K/lense) as need PL but that is one of the best options out there for this camera

MID-QUALITY:
GL Options 18 35 Rehoused Sigma, about 3500US$ for 100ª or 4500US$ for 300ª
Optica Elite T1.3 for wide for about 5K per prime, but needs PL. I talked with Gregori, he can study to try to find a way to build this lenses for EF
Illumina, same as above, except I didnt talk with anyone

CHEAP ONES:
Rokinon DS
Canon Zooms
I dont reccomend or I dont see in my arsenal, a RED camera with a cheap lense, Im sorry

I discart Canon CN as 24mm is T3.1, Zeiss CP2 as the same or poor at wide, same with Xeen. There's no other FF with wide and fast features

RESUME: Will be better if RED produces a Raven with PL mount, can be fixed to fit in the RED line, but a PL

Just something to add to this discussion because I'm watching all of this intently. Since Raven is EF Mount, perhaps the wise move would be to get one of the sets of primes that has interchangeable lens mounts. Meaning Zeiss CP.2s or Schneider Xenon FF-Primes (Cine-Xenars do too, but budget-wise/price point I don't see many talking about them). Xeens are also interchangeable, though I haven't seen the kit yet. Additionally, Duclos Lenses can "make" Canon CN-E primes into PL mount if that is ever the desire.

Just a thought.

How are you going to fix the barrel and pincushion distortion inherent in pretty much every single SLR zoom lens? If that is built into Redcine, given that the file has the appropriate metadata, then at least that problem is taken care of. Then of course you have the other compromises in most photographic zoom lenses such as curvature of field, smearing etc.

But if you want to use photo lenses, don't feel limited to Tokina, Tamron, Sigma, Canon. Quite a few popular mounts can be (theoretically) adapted onto EF. Have a look:

http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~westin/misc/mounts-by-register.html

The most noteworthy (apart from R and F which are obvious to all):

Pentax M42 and K: 45.46

Contax/Yashica: 45.5

Contax N: 48

Leitz Visoflex I: 62.5

There's a Contax N 17-35/2.8 you can get for not much more than $2,000. I don't know how it performs but I'd be surprised if it was beaten by the Canon equivalent. And you're only using the centre portion of the image circle, remember.

There are some amazingly good lenses out there for very little money. A Contax Zeiss 200mm/3.5 or 135/2.8 can be had for under $300. That's three HUNDRED. Crikey. Get them while they're cheap.

If RED made an E mount version, you could use SpeedBoosters in addition to the excellent range of Zeiss primes. Even if they don't, you have some really good choices. There is not much to complain about.

TRUE STORY

This thread makes me think that there are not "serious options" for this Camera, BUT Zeiss Otus can be great i guess even if it's full frame am i wrong? Let's hope for a fast/wide angle before March..

There are many serious options for this camera.

I think there are not many serius cinema options for this camera, too much cheap photo lenses but a few options for cinema, and , as I listed, almost no option for prime for wide, and no one prime for wide and low light

GL 18-35 1.8 with 300 degree focus is a perfect lens for RAVEN.

All the CNE's work.

CP2s

Zeiss CP Zooms.

Schneider Xenons

And more...

To be honest, i don't see many RAVEN users go with expensive Cinema-lenses. And to expensive i count CP.2 and Xenon too. Great options for sure, but a set of those will cost some serious money. To my understanding RAVEN is built to be used with still-lenses for lightweight run&gun. You know, low-budget and indies. Fixed Canon-Mount and pricing says all.

I think RAVEN is best paired with Zeiss Milvus, maybe Otus, or Canon, Sigma... Motorized ART-lenses together with Optitron2 are very appealing and may offer more bang for the buck than a set of CP.2-lenses or a re-housed SIGMA 18-35. ;)

I also see lots of vintage glass-users. Canon FD or Contax are cool things.

Maik is absolutely right

You can always rent whatever you want and those CP.2s are dirt cheap as a rental. Raven crowd won't be mounting Masters on their cameras for sure, but even Ultras are a good match, you can rent those too.

You may rent them, but they won't fit on the Raven ;-)
