  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lenses for red raven

Thats a fisheye. FF35. A BRILLIANT lens, possibly one of best fisheyes ever made. Hard to get a GOOD copy.

oh wow, i wonder what it looks like on s35 size sensor, probably a bit too much distortion.

You can see it in this spot, second shot:

And in this spot at 0:19, the "thumbs up":

It has some nice "fun" distortion, which I love, in the right spot.

Using a FF on raven or like using a S35 on a say 2/3" sensor, means that not all the area captured bybthe lens will go to the sensor, only the area of the sensor, so you will loose the difference say ftom m3/4 to FF.
This is not a problem unless you go to wide shooting. If you use a 25mm FF lense on raven, then youll get only the center area say like the divide by 2 well bt 1.87 so is like zooming to 1.87 so at thevend you dont get a 25mm wide distance as you only get the area of the center of FF that covers the say m4/3 so this is like if you were shooting with a 45mm. Some shoots lije interviews requires wide angle and using a 24mm FF in raven will be not ok for live interviews inperson etc.. my 2 cents

Thank you, Tony! Very helpful!
So If you use FF lens on a APS-C (Raven) for example 24mm you have to multiply it by the difference between lens area and sensor area? Right? :-)

Never looked at the Canon EF-S lens series before, but will they fit on to the Raven or is the flange distance too great for the Raven EF mount and would you need an adaptor - additionally would you have full control over the lens as per a normal EF lens.

Canon produce a Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM for wide shots

Thanks

Canon EF and EF-S lenses work on Raven and the RED DSMC Lens Mounts. Your Tokina is an EF-S btw.

Thanks Phil, I hadn't appreciated that. My Tokina 11-16mm was great on my old Epic so looks like lm covered on all focal lengths.

3.5 - 4.5 thats not good thats not cinema lenses
Im not awarr about xeen, 14mm at T1.8 might be better than a gl 18-38 f1.8 (t2-2.1) but at least is another option better than CP 15mm T2.9

Nikon has a 10mm DX 2.8 that isn't bad at all. Its a little soft on the edges wide open but stopped down a little its sharp. Simple adaptor to EF mount.

If the olfp is further than 22.5mm from the canon flange they can be converted to EF

and i take it that is something we dont know yet? or else youd answer it.
i think that would be a good match for this camera if its possible.

Red has never disclosed this kind of information. It's strange because I get it from Canon Sony, Arri, Panavision.....

that is strange, kind of lets us not prepare for things like lensing until we actually have the camera, hmmm…thanks!

I’ll throw in one idea on lens selection assuming it hasn’t already been said. If you buy a Raven, you have all the accessories to use with a Weapon brain. You may be tempted to upgrade (buy a Weapon) later. If there’s any chance of this, it might make sense to keep this in mind during lens selection. If you are sitting on the fence between a S35 and a FF lens, this might push you to the FF version to cover more of the Weapon sensor.

I strongly recommend Leica Rs for FF coverage, especially if you're looking for something a little different.

Though the S35 crop may be an issue on the wide end of the spectrum.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm planning on building a set of Elmarit and Summilux lenses to cinevise but I can't seem to find a wider solution. 19mm Elmitar is the widest that I can viably obtain (15mm is ~$6-7k and rare), and with the crop factored in it's around a 35mm?

It would be certainly be nice to have that wide ability when I need it for narrative work.

My opinion is that the sigma 18-35 is a no brainer for this camera. I also love my contax zeiss lenses on my scarlet which is 4k and similar crop. I would love to add the 15mm zeiss zf, but it is priced quite high. I currently use the 14mm rokion, but try to not use it unless I have to as I don't think it renders as nice as the other lenses.

I would love something in the 12-14mm range under f2, but I know that is not going to happen, zeiss ultra prime would be my dream lenses( I know, its not going to happen on raven) as I do love to shoot wide emmaunuel lubezki type shots.
