  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Excellent shots – David, Mark, Albert, Kenny, Vincent & Daniel!

Keep em coming...

Ha just looked at mine, you are right, the aperture changes with the zoom. You learn something every day.
I had this problem with many leica lenses and the leica dealer in SF told me it's completely normal. In some modular telephotos (280/400/560/800) it has a very strange x-gon with funny corners but that's how is made.

Vincent! Looking good as always.

Here are a few frame grabs from a job a couple of months ago. All shot on the Leica R 135.

We're shooting a music video this weekend that will all be shot on R's. I'll post it when it's finished.

These shots are timeless! Looking forward to watch the motion stuff out of this!

Hi Josef,

Yes, that's the 2.0 - a very affordable lens considering.

The 3 cam Summicron 50 is also a very affordable lens. I just sold mine on eBay for about 275. It was a great buy. Heck, the CLA cost $200, I think.

The thing to keep in mind when starting a set of these is to keep the serial #s in the same general area - coatings have changed over time and they match less well the farther apart the serial #s get.

The 180 is also a more affordable version - they get pricey when the APO 180 came out. The old 180 is still nice, has some CA, etc. But the APO 180 is notoriously sharp and definitely superior in every way.

That's completely normal on the 35-70 f4 zoom and have seen it on multiple samples. They should open up entirely towards 70mm though.

Thanks for clarification, so the Leica shop charged for an unnecessary repair, that's hilarious. I will ask them for a refund.

from 2 days ago, another orange/blue look....leica r 180mm

Does anyone have any examples from the 80-200 / 4.0 ELMARIT R? I would love to see some if you do!

Hey Leica friends,

I just purchased a 19mm V2 for a great price, it's the first of my collection of Leica R's, so pretty pumped about it. Though upon inspection of the lens, I have noticed a small dust or particle element that seems to be trapped within the glass elements of the lens itself. I'm interstate without a camera, so unable to test it right now, though trying to get my hands on a body.

What do you guys think of this? Is this something that might be able to be cleaned in a service? Could this give me grief in the future? Picture attached.

There is a 2 week return policy on this used item, so don't hesitate to tell me it's not worth the $2500 I spent on it!

Thanks

if it is just dust it likely won't cause any issues. You may see it popup in bokeh depending on a particular shooting scenario but not very distracting. If it is not dust and mold/fungus it will spread over time. I think my 90 chron has a speck in there. I saw it popup in bokeh sometimes on my scarlet. For some reason it didn't popup when wide open on my 5D mark 3.

Thanks Samir, just spoke to a service centre here and they said not to worry, described what fungus might look like and I think I'm safe. Got my hands on an adapter and a 5DM3 for tomorrow so will give it a test.

agreed with Samir.

a spec like that shouldn't cause any troubles. I bought a Nikon zoom lens a few years ago in china that had a pretty obviously visible spec behind the front element and it never caused any problems.

Anyone have any suggestions for good serial ranges for the Leica R 90 f/2 and 24 f/2.8?
I am hoping to match with some late 90's Zooms that I got a great price on but am hoping that it won't be necessary to buy all late 90's glass as the 90 and 24 are both quite expensive from that period :-)

I'm not a fan of the 24, I have one that I don't use. I like the 28 (ver. 2) much better.

@ Mark - What don't you like about the 24mm... I was looking for something considerably wider than 35mm as I will be shooting "doc" films and wanted a 35-70 f/4 & 80-200mm f/4 setup (for quick focal length changes) and I was thinking of extending the range with a 24mm and a 90mm f/2 (for portraits)...

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

What about the 21-35 f/3.5-4. Have used that lens with both the 35-70 f/4 & 80-200mm f/4 and the 35-70 f/2.8 & 70-180mm f/2.8. Apart from the speed I have no complaints and nor have directors I have worked with. Nice to have the extra flexibility with doc work and matches well with the lenses you mention.

Shawn, might also want to consider the 19mm v2 for a great much-wider-than-35mm option.

That is an awesome frame Brian! Colour correction/grade and costume/art-direction look great.
