  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Fantastic frame Brian.

I have a lead on a local 80/1.4. I have gone back and forth on this lens sooo many times. Some images I have seen online have been great. Some images I have seen anomalies in rendering white (like in the eyes) that I don't like. Someone please talk me out of it cause my wallet may hate me after Saturday.

Well... 80mm f1.4 is the Leica-R lens I use the absolute most. I love the combo of 19vII, 28vII, 60 and 100mm for a lot of reasons, but tend to use my 80 f1.4 allott on people. Sorry wallet - no help here...

I'm loving the 35mm F1.4 these days. Just a gorgeous piece of glass.

I could not resist. I had to pick it up. Testing coming this weekend.

Samir, you won't regret it. All 3 Summiluxes are wonderful peices of glass along with the others Mathias mentioned. There are at least a few more LR primes on my fav list including the 90 Apo Asph, 180 Apos, etc...

Found a 35mm 1.4 for about $4000, it's in perfect condition. Want it so bad, but not sure if it's a touch out of market price range. They let me test it though, so I finally know why you all in this thread drool over it!

@ Mark - What don't you like about the 24mm... I was looking for something considerably wider than 35mm as I will be shooting "doc" films and wanted a 35-70 f/4 & 80-200mm f/4 setup (for quick focal length changes) and I was thinking of extending the range with a 24mm and a 90mm f/2 (for portraits)...

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

Mine is just soft wide open, better if your at say F8 but who can count on always shooting there.

Its maybe about 10% higher than I'd expect, I think I paid closer to $3500 for mine.

Hi guys. I'm loving this thread. It has become one of my daily go to's. I'm in love with the look of these lenses. I've decided I want to build a personal set. So I don't want to go too crazy with budget. What 3-4 lenses would you recommend that I start with and then perhaps improve on that. I mainly do narrative work so I don't need super long lenses. I'm sorry if it might have been covered before but when I flip through the pages I always end up looking at the beautiful images everyone is posting. Good job everyone. Thanks David for starting this.!

If you don't want to spend a lot, the 35/2.0, 50/2.0 and 90/2.8 might be a good start, I started with theses and added later the 28/2.8 and 135/2.8. I miss a wide angle but I'm monitoring the market for a good 19/2.8 v2!

I was recently looking for a Leica zoom for travelling and " bro " shooting (Without having to change prime every minute) and I bought a used 35-70/4, it's an amazing lense! Sharp, not too slow with the speedbooster on my BMPCC and the extra stop of light. Shot that handled with it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPTCNjT7rRM

Hi Guillaume - Thanks for the tip. Loved the dance piece. Really polished work. Looks great. Exporessions were amazing. I always enjoy a video that takes my mind off lenses and technical aspects and just focus on the acting or whatever is being delivered. Good job. The test with the zoom was very interesting too. Loads of character in the lens. Thanks again.

I purchased my first Leica R almost 10 years ago, before the “Leica Craze”. My first lens was a very nice copy of a Summicron 50mm, I fell in love. My next lens was a brand new 90 APO (which is still new) before long I had a set of all late SN new or pristine Leica Rs, 19 V2, 35, 50, 90 APO but needed to fill that gap bwtween the 19mm & 35mm. “Do I get the 24mm or 28mm?” “Do I get the 24mm or 28mm?”

I personally like the 24mm focal length better than 28mm & although the 28mm (from all accounts i’d heard) was WAY BETTER than the 24mm especial wide open and CA. I went on with this battle off and on for a few years. A few months ago a 24mm SN# 3784xxxx came on my radar that looked like a great copy in the pictures shown of it.
I could buy it and return it for a full refund so I figured why not..?

Since i’ve gotten it i’ve ONLY SHOT IT WIDE OPEN, I figure i’d start with it’s weak spot first. The results… It must be a 24mm with 28mm INTERNALS because this is thing is TACK SHARP, on par with my 90 APO and i have to really look hard to find any CA.

I’ll dig up some more samples but here are a few I can put my hands on right now. I don’t know if I got a freak copy or if you just want to look for a late SN# but I love the 24mm I scored so much I haven’t taken off my DSLR, it’s been a 24mm summer!

The pic of the hand was taken raw and not edited at all, just exported as a .jpeg, (look at the pinky for focus)

Below is a clip of my nephew in the bath, Scarlet Dragon at 48 fps, ISO boosted up way higher than it was captured. Look at the boats and his hands especially for focus, download it for best viewing.

According to Nan at GL Optics, they are now offering a complete set of Leica lenses rehoused for cinema production. The lenses, which range from 19mm-135mm, offer an f-stops of 2.0. on the 50 & 90mm, with the 19mm, 24mm, 28mm and 135mm having an f-stop of 2.8. Prices have yet to be announced, however you can guarantee that they will be substantially less than Leica’s own current line of cinema lenses.

we are super ready to go www.CinemaGlass.com :)

Do you guys please have any guide on which serials to start looking from or is there some kind of reference I can go to?

Hi Kirk,

I have a 19mm, 24mm, summicron 35mm, summicron 50, summicron 90 all produced between 1979 and 1982 to get the most coherent lens set in terms of coating.
Most of those or latest design (but the latest produced lens, ROM version, should be a bit better even if the design is the same) except the 19mm mkII and 90mm ASPH but they're very expensive. I won't recommend to get first version of the lens, except if you want a vintage look.

It really depends on what you want and what is your budget. The best lenses are the latest produced if found in pristine condition. But they're so expensive. On this site, you'll have all the leica R lenses produced: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/R_Lenses_x_Focal_Length.

Good luck.

An example of my 1980 summicron-R 50mm (almost wide-open: 2.0 1/2). They're quite sharp, good color and nice bokeh.
