I had this problem with many leica lenses and the leica dealer in SF told me it's completely normal. In some modular telephotos (280/400/560/800) it has a very strange x-gon with funny corners but that's how is made.Ha just looked at mine, you are right, the aperture changes with the zoom. You learn something every day.
Vincent! Looking good as always.
Here are a few frame grabs from a job a couple of months ago. All shot on the Leica R 135.
We're shooting a music video this weekend that will all be shot on R's. I'll post it when it's finished.

That's completely normal on the 35-70 f4 zoom and have seen it on multiple samples. They should open up entirely towards 70mm though.
I'm not a fan of the 24, I have one that I don't use. I like the 28 (ver. 2) much better.
@ Mark - What don't you like about the 24mm... I was looking for something considerably wider than 35mm as I will be shooting "doc" films and wanted a 35-70 f/4 & 80-200mm f/4 setup (for quick focal length changes) and I was thinking of extending the range with a 24mm and a 90mm f/2 (for portraits)...
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!
