  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Tomorrow, I will dig up a shot with that lens wide open.

Great shot Vincent. Would love to see an r3d snapshot of that one. That 80mm is a wonderful lens. Mine blooms a bit at 1.4 but such a solid piece of glass!

I'll try to post a r3d after the week-end.
I love the 80mm but on my last job, I made the mistake of shooting some stuff at 1,4 and it doesn't look good at all ;) It's like if I have added some glow and gaussian blur in post...
Note to myself: never shoot again wide open with that lens!

When I first used the 80 WO it threw me for a loop. After playing with it for a while I learned to treat is as a one-of-a-kind special effect to be used selectively in the right context. Its baked into the image in a way that'd be hard to replicate in post...
a 'dream filter' of sorts :)

Very nice 80 lux portrait Vincent

True, I was really surprised at first and probably not in a good way but after reading your comment and thinking more about it, I imagine some compositions which could benefit from that "look".
Thanks for this advice.
Shooting with these Leica-R lenses is a new thing for me and sharing experiences with all you Guys on that thread definitely helps a lot.

Man this is a lens brand that I know nothing about but the images in this post are amazing!! I have a scarlet X EF mount does anyone know if there is an adapter available for this lens available. What is the difference between the R version and M version of this lens. I seen a couple on ebay and wasn't really sure. Does anyone have any video footage of the Scarlet X with any of these Leica lenses? I really love the quality images of the Summulix 35mm 1.4 and 50 mm version in this post!

I've learned so much thanks to others on here and its nice seeing them being put to great use on Dragon.

The R is the one you want because the mount size adapts well (believe it has something to do with flange distance). A company called Leitax makes a Leica R to EF adapter (about $100/each shipped) and there are a couple Red approved Leica R mount options available. In my experience the best of these lenses perform extremely well on Scarlet X.

I've found this thread a great resource for Leica R on Red answering many questions:

Here is a photo of a Leica taken with a Leica. Just wanted to show one of the focus gears I purchased from "Helicopter Sean". These are custom made for each lens type and they fit perfectly. I want the minimalist cine-conversion for my lenses and these gears are perfect for that. His prices are pretty reasonable and many lens gears are available off the shelf on eBay or at http://followfocusgears.com I did get one custom gear and the process is a little different for that, but the result is the same -- seamless, inexpensive gears. They press right on to the existing focus ring.

Can you two elaborate on when you would use the 80? I have a 90/2 and the 80/1.4 looks absurdly expensive if it blooms wide open and it requires always being used stopped down. The 80 lux has been on my radar a while but I just can't seem to pull the trigger.

It has a dreamy look wide open that i can see working well for creative projects like MVs and such. The look disappears by about f2. Not sure how it compares to the old 90/2 otherwise, but imagine it may be a bit sharper at close range. If you can get your hands on one, the 90/2 apo asph takes micro-contrast to a whole nother level... It has a different look too that I prefer slightly over the 80, but they're both great.

Thanks Mark. I think I will sit out getting the 80 for now.

To my memory it does just about what super speeds do wide open. You get that extra stop which brightens the fram considerable but it does tend to bloom. I kind like the look it produces, the 50 can do it a bit as well wide open. The 35mm lux, well, that's in another league.

While looking for something else I coincidentally stumbled upon this comparison of the 80 & 90 on a photography site:

There are two distinct camps on the 90/2 and 80 lux. Some love the 80 while others consider the premium over the 90/2 as not worth it.

I've owned/used both and MUCH prefer the 80.

The 80 Lux is sharp-enough WO and has that famous Mandler (old-school Leica lens designer) 'glow'. Once you stop it down to 2.2-2.8, it gets razor sharp in the center. The 90/2 is nice, has the same Mandler fingerprint but is very soft WO and doesn't get as sharp as the 80 in the center until about 5.6. The 80 is also very flare resistant and very well-corrected for CA/PF.

Both lenses are buttery bokeh.

Here's the Leica 280mm Telyt 2.8 on the Epic. Had to custom fabricate a lens post but it works perfectly with the Arri LS10 or the RED Lens Support.
