  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

I've owned 2 Leica R 70-180s now, and wow. Still holding onto one I picked up recently, but haven't cinevised it... yet. From what I gather its quite costly to do it right.
The images they produce are tack sharp even in corners yet creamy and about the closest thing to perfect bokeh imo. Found it hits a sweet spot between the more interesting, yet nervous bokeh that the Summiluxes produce, and the smoother (but more mundane) bokeh from more modern asph lenses like the 90 apo asph and 28 asph. 'Painterly' describes it well. I've used mine almost entirely for stills on an A7r as I'm still mulling over options for cinevising.

Glad to read your feedback about that zoom Mark!
The more I think about it the more I want one ;)
If I may ask why is that zoom difficult to cinevised?

Part of the issue (from what I've experienced and gathered from others here) is the zoom tends to be on the stiff side – designed as a still lens, it wasn't intended to be cine-smooth and the grease gradually drys over time. Having it regreased by Leica or an experienced Leica technician is costly due to its optical complexity. Plus you'll want gears added to both the focus and zoom. At least one reduser had theirs rehoused in PL I believe, which of course isn't cheap either. But others who've been through the process can answer this much better than I can, and am overdue to check-in with Duclos on it to find out more... which I hope to do this week and will let you know what I learn.

Now very curious about the Angenieux zoom again. I've heard their 35-70 midrange matches the tele nicely. Has anyone here played with that one?
The 180 2.8 APO is also worth checking out. Stunning really. It very well be may favorite fixed LR for pure IQ and handling... but not the most practical focal length.

The 35-70 is a great compact zoom wich can go macro aswell. I don't know about the 70-180 (never had one in my hands) but the 35-70 match easy with my Angenieux 70-210. So as with my primes R mount.

And if you are interested, here is 2 R3D frames extract from the 2 zoom (35-70 Vario Elmart+70-210 Angenieux for Leica) at 70.

Vincent if you are visiting Paris and want to give a try to the Angie send me a PM, if I'm around I'll be glad to let you play with it. ;)

Thanks a lot for these explanations Mark!

Vincent, if you haven't seen this thread yet you'll find several more reasons to obtain the LR 70-180 :)

(The LR primes they tested were older elmarits and summicrons from the late 70s and early 80s, so while interesting, I took those comments with a grain of salt.)

How could I have missed that thread! More than interesting!
I know what you mean regarding the feedback on the R... Let's say that mine are more recent so I'd rather think they perform better ;)

C'est noté Brice! Merci beaucoup, je me manquerai pas cette occasion lors de mes prochaines visites.

Great examples their Brice, really magical! Were those taken with the Angenieux 35-70 or Leica R 35-70? I do own the 35-70 f4 Macro LR, which I find a solid performer. With so many phenomenal LR options, its not an all-time favorite per say but very versatile in environments with ample light. Looks like the 35-70 Agneniuex is 2.5-3.3 and have heard it matches their 70-210 quite well.

The 35-70 is a Leica R.

"Solid"performer is the good word.
I like to bring it with me in hostile environment.

Nice images Brice.

I'll dig up some more 70-210 later but here are a few from the 100mm macro APO for you nature lovers.

Just a stunning lens.

Here is a landscape on the 70-210 at 70mm

There's something about the way that lens separates colour.

Almost turns some frames into a painting...

Can someone chime in on this one:

for the 19mm V2 do you need to grind that rear element protrusion to use with the RED canon mount or is that only necessary for using with DSLR?

Unfortunately for the Nikon mount on Epic/Scarlet it touches and needs to be ground down, anybody know anybody in NYC who can do this mod? I love my 19 v2 and haven't been able to use it on my RED.

I would not recommend trying that mod (to the lens). There is very little margin for error and if you touch the rear element, well.. you know. If you go with the RED Nikon mount, you are better off shaving that down and it does not affect the electronics and then a few other lenses clear as well.

Other option is to go with the cinemods mount, but there is no PL style lock on that one.

here is the 19mm V2 covering dragon. Probably at around F 5.6

Nope that is the Angie. so sweet.

Damn, it is sweet.. I had the 35-70 and the 70-210 and didn't have the best of luck with them, bad copies of them both even though from what I could tell I liked the feel. I never got to use the 70-210 on my red but the 35-70 in the right spot was really nice, you got me looking at 70-210 again.

Interesting recommendation.. I thought it was the lens not the mount and have only heard of grinding the lens down as David from Leitax shows here
http://leitax.com/conversion/leica/Elmarit-19_current/index.html

I would much rather file down the mount but I'm not sure that's the issue.

The rear of the lens moves toward the mount as it focuses. When it runs out of space, it hits the mount. It's about 1-1.5mm is all it needs to be able to clear. It will not work on a D700 body because you can not shave the mirror, so the 35 and the 19 are a no go for stills. I think the dragon is better for stills than the D700 anyway. :)

But, there is a little thick spot there in the RED nikon mount that can be shaved. Get it done professionally. I also had the entire inside of the mount re matted to cut down on internal reflections as there were a few reflective surfaces in there.
