  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Nice ones David! The second one in particular is very rich (35 lux), especially given the low lighting.

Thanks Mark,

That's actually lit with a 1.2K HMI and I rated at 250ISO F2.8 because I did not want it wide open. Sorta the mood we were going for :)
That was captured with Dragon (see how the flames and lights in the scene hold) as are 3 and 4. The first one is on MX.

That 35mm lens is pretty special. I'm going to it a lot these days.

Dragon & the 35 Lux appear to be an excellent match! I was surprised how well the flames and lights held up in the scene.

The contrast is pretty great (even) on these lenses, when I tested them against modern nikors I found they rendered a less contrasty and deeper image which is nicely suited to filmmaking and digital imagery.

Just put together a set of Rs. This is the first test shot with the 90mm Summicron wide open. I think I will like these lenses.

Thanks for joining in and posting!

Nice smooth tones across that whole frame. I'm sure the guy framing up the shot was smiling too!

Nice serie David! Loving the mood in these shots.

Thanks Vincent,

Here are a few more from a couple of rare R lenses.

First the 250mm F4. This thing is a beast!

Then the Angenieux 70-210 3.5 zoom. This lens is magical.

I agree with Dominik, this bridge is amazing, it might be nice to run there every day.
Amazing shot... I need to know more about this lens if possible.
What's your feedback about it David please?

BTW anyone here with a 70-180mm? I'd really like to know if that zoom worths the investment...

70-180 is an absolute dream. Beats the canons/nikon/zeiss. Holds focus thru the zoom. If you find one in good condition buy it instantly. I regret from time to time selling off my R set

Sorry you had to sell yours.
Any chance you would have the time to share some pictures shot with it?

Vincent,

the 70-210 is a macro zoom made by angenieux with the Leica R mount. I converted mine to nikon mount. This lens has a kind of magical warm tone and is gorgeous even wide open. I shot with it a lot at the palace of Versailles last year in September and the combination of that Paris light and the way that lens has a very unique color and character that just places the focus just right, ect.

They made a 45-90 as well that is also a variable zoom.

If you put it side by side with a modern lens you want to eat the image because it just has a something special.

Ill try try to dig up a few shots.

Thanks for these infos David.
The more I shoot with my Canon 70-200mm L, the less I like it.
I really feel the need to try that zoom, just saw some of them on Ebay... I'm still hesitating in buying a Leica R 70-180 but this one could be a great alternative.
Glad to read that a lens made in France works well in Paris, it should always be the case ;)

How is the coverage on Dragon with the Angie?

Excellent imagery David & Brice. Now very curious about the Angenieux zoom again. I've heard their 35-70 midrange matches the tele nicely. Has anyone here played with that one?

I've owned 2 Leica R 70-180s now, and wow. Still holding onto one I picked up recently, but haven't cinevised it... yet. From what I gather its quite costly to do it right.

The images they produce are tack sharp even in corners yet creamy and about the closest thing to perfect bokeh imo. Found it hits a sweet spot between the more interesting, yet nervous bokeh that the Summiluxes produce, and the smoother (but more mundane) bokeh from more modern asph lenses like the 90 apo asph and 28 asph. 'Painterly' describes it well. I've used mine almost entirely for stills on an A7r as I'm still mulling over options for cinevising.

The 180 2.8 APO is also worth checking out. Stunning really. It very well be may favorite fixed LR for pure IQ and handling... but not the most practical focal length.
