  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the Panavision DXL

Technically it doesn't say colour *science*, so maybe it's just loaded with a set of "PV/LI" approved LUTs or something built-in/applied.

EDIT: Nevermind, just watched the video -- definitely LightIron Colour and LightIron Gamma... If I were to bet, I'd say there's nothing technically/tehcnologically stopping all RED owners for being able to use it (though the profiles will likely be tweaked specifically with PV glass in mind).

This is amazing. Well done Red. I remember when Panavision refused to rent to me because I owned a RedOne. You've come a long way.

Now... where is my 8K upgrade!

I hope you guys realize this is going to legitimize Red camera use to all the directors, producers, and everyone else in the industry that currently say "Red?! no way lets use Arri stupid". This Panavision branding package is the final kick that takes the Red brand closer to "Industry Standard". That, in and of itself, is awesome!

I can only speculate but from reading the spec and looking at the video. It seams to be a very well dressed 8k weapon that has a backpack with a whole lot of sdi ports and lut boxes and additional gui screen, extended wifi, wireless audio, fiz etc. Then a panavision mount with the digital stuff for the new lenses. But at the core it seems to be a 8k weapon. As the camera records the 8k weapon codecs, frame speeds etc.

Which is cool. Im sure this will make a lot of dps that has strong opinion against red to think twice about their stand.
And im positive this camera will be very popular in the high end rental segment. Which will be great for panavision.

But very much more important.... this whole thing puts all our weapon cameras in a totally new light as they now are "same tech as panavision use" and for sure quite a few big blockbusters ahead will be shot with these at a higher frequency then ever before. 8k weapon sensor im sure will be some what of a gold standard for quite some time forward.

So if nothing else this is possibly one of the best promotion boost normal red weapon cameras could ever get. And to me thats not more than fair as Weapon is such a freaking beast next to the competition it blows my mind shooting them side by side.

Edit: Just what Brody wrote.

Couldn't agree more. Fantastic work guys!

It was an impressive demo at the ASC clubhouse. Cioni and his crew have cooked up an addition to Graeme's color science for what they hope is better skin tones out of the box. Panavision will only rent these.
And the settings in the closeups are a bit wonky because people were playing around on both sides of the camera where you can change settings. Much as if you had 2 sidekicks on either side.

Nice to see Panavision and Red and Light Iron work together

The real story here is how important the Dragon sensor itself has been. RED did a very good thing with Dragon. It's improvements over Mysterium-X have paved the way.

The Film Format to Resolution Relevance (this is a bigger thing than many give it credit for despite resolution critics), the Color Science (high five Graeme!), the Dynamic Range, Interchangeable OLPFs, IR Cutting/Blocking, etc..... With DSMC2 came a host of advancements that took Dragon to another level.

This is sort of the culmination of all of that in a huge way.

Everybody on the engineering team should get a pat on the back right now.

I think the other point to emphasize here as this camera doesn't "hit" owner/operators the same way as it does studios and ASC members. The DSMC2 cameras you have or have coming all feature the same level of image quality that the PV DXL does. Just a different type of body and variance on the sensor size/resolution your camera supports.

The things the DXL does a lot well. Even down to the user interface panels and buttons that are friendly for Operators and ACs. Big kudos on the the design of this thing.

Great announcement.

Now just awaiting the similar announcement for the one we can purchase that has all the layout/ergonomics/user interfaces WE'VE BEEN ASKING FOR SINCE DAY ONE.

There's not much new here that hasn't been mentioned before by many here on refuser and face to face at shows.

It's a shame that all the little rental houses out there that have supported, promoted , band-aided and made bits to make these cameras work and become an industry standard will now play second fiddle to PV in all their markets.

Well done on the collaboration but somewhat disappointing at the same time.

wellt he cats out of the bag!
time to get back in with panavision!
i wondered how long the big boys were going to let us dance around with our little cameras...

Wow! Just another example on how Red continues to pave the way! Pretty awesome to think that my Weapon is a little brother to what makes up Panavision! Red truly is the industry standard and this solidifies that!

Was this the real reason why Red stopped production on everything but 'ravens' last month to crank out these for Panavision??? ;)

Wonder how many of these they are making...
