  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the Panavision DXL

Beautiful work fellas. Only question, why no RED logo on it? Just hate to see credit not given where it's due

Modular and tooless quick changeover accessories

i really wish our new monitors were tooless, like the wooden camera pogo to pogo setup.
on set it was always like where's that screw driver thingy!?

I don't understand the chagrin on some of these posts. This can only be a good thing as far as I see it.

Well, there's a lot of Panavision logos on it. Do we need 2 different logos?

REDVISION !

Bad Ass!! Congrats Jarred... beautiful thing

This might explain why the Raven has taken so long to roll out! I imagine this would have taken a good portions of RED's resources recently? Not a criticism or anything, I totally get it. This is huge for RED and the cinema world. I look forward to shooting on it one day.

Once again, I'm proud of you, Jarred and Jim!

I'd love to see the faces of the cinematography.com forum dudes now... ; )

Cheers,

E :-)

This all makes a lot of sense. Very smart play by everyone involved and I wouldn't underestimate the Lightiron color part of the equation which I'm guessing are some custom LUTs designed by their color wizards, including Ian. So look coming out of the camera probably pretty sweet.

We've now seen two custom designed cameras with RED internals. So for everyone wondering why they can't have something like this, it seems RED is open to the idea of their cameras being integrated into a custom design but you need to bring some money and resources to the table. They really are covering all bases now. Entry level with the Raven all the way up through custom designed 8K models. They've come a long way in 10 years.

Well, if it is of any consolation, Panavision only RENTS their equipment and makes sure (like the GENESIS, which is based on a SONY 900) that all innovations/additions/modifications that they make to any camera and put their name on, is proprietary.
The Genesis had a radical new sensor, its output processed by parts from the f900 bin.
In comparison the DXL apparently has very little new core tech. (?)

Nothing wrong with that, Panavision badge and ergonomics are highly valued in their very niche market. Also how the core tech is implemented (brush strokes) needs no patents or trademarks. So we look forward to identifying the look!

In return for making 100? Genesis cameras, Sony acquired 8% of Panavision in a joint venture. Later, in a deal that was characterised as being very good for Sony, Panavision bought back the 8%.
Panavision has been under new ownership for a while.

For this venture, I don't suppose for a minute that Red have agreed to some kind of non compete agreement!

I think it is, on balance good news for Red and Redusers.

I haven't posted in ages, but wanted to pop in and offer my congratulations. Huge props to team Red, for not only some great technical advancements, but also for this strategic move that will surely and securely validate the DSMC2 system within the high end market.

Someone needs to do a shootout with the Arri65 and this cam. :ihih:

Would love to see how they compare.

Great Job Michael, Jim, Jarred, Brent, Graeme and everyone involved. Its a good day for Cinematography in general, the envelope is being pushed. The audience benefits! Shout out to TED for bringing Michael into the Red Family!!! Those were exciting days.

This explains the PV and LI relationship that showcased the 8K footage at Cinegear last year. I'm happy to see Panavision finally pulling out a new camera (or at least a Panavised camera). Their "new camera" was in the works for years and was probably canned once they met Red and realized they couldn't do better. I'm excited to see some footage. Alexa65 look out. I also like seeing the SDI return. Nice work. I'm sure Dominick Aiello was heavily involved. I spent a few good years working at PV Woodland Hills in 03'. What a great place to be when digital was starting to take hold. Panavision really does a great job of listening to their customers and creating extremely custom solutions for the camera department.

Damn. Picked one hell of an evening to crash early. Impressive news to wake up to.

Not surprised - RED has consistently been a game changer from it's introduction. Jim challenged conventional norms and accelerated development of the tools we use as cinematographers.
A great deal of the credit goes to the team members RED has assembled to bring that vision to being. And now it continues to evolve with the newest collaborations.
It's a new world all over again.
To think the cameras in our hands today have brought us here...

Bravo!

Been an incredibly long and exciting day… Nice to catch up with you all and see the feedback.! Thank you for the kind words as we've been working very hard on this project. Many more answers to this new tool coming at CineGear this weekend at the Panavision/Light Iron booth. If you're in town, please come visit us. We'll be showcasing all our large format lenses on a special camera test reel in our 4K theater. We'll also have working cameras in the booth for you to play with and also try out all the large format lenses and see how they create brand new looks! And we'll have a Quantel RIO 8K in the booth where you can actually color the 8K footage in real time and play it back on an HDR OLED 4K monitor. I'm looking forward to all these fun things and also speaking with you and getting your feedback on how we can make the whole system even better.
And if you have specific questions about the system, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer them all.

Lastly, I want to say the collaboration between Panavision, Light Iron, and RED is no accident. I couldn't be happier with the teams of people we have breaking new ground every day. The talent, speed, and vision is beyond impressive. If you go back and look for it, you'll see evidence of this project through a number of different things over the past couple years. But above all, I want you to know that this is not a picture of where we are, rather a preview of where we're going. Some people have a tendency to draw all conclusions based on exactly what's in front of them. Remember, the best visionaries know where the puck is going to be. This DXL camera is only the beginning. I cannot stress that enough…

Michael
