  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Idea Regarding Mini-mag Trade-in Program

I was thinking the same thing, given that I have 4x 256gb redmags. If it were no difference to Red, why not give someone larger capacity mags to keep in the wild, and I could send in the 64gb mags for an "early retirement". Again, if Red is only going to destroy the mags anyway.

Either way, it's a very lovely offer on behalf of Jarred and Red. Thanks for always doing what you can to help us make the transition from one stage to another!

Yes - this was exactly my thinking. I certainly am not trying to advocate cheating RED of anything!

Shame we can't get a deal on the side SSD too - worth a try - ahem (I can see Jarred doing this! ).

But, being able to use against the 4 packs or bundles would be great.

I get a feeling that the most logical way for RED to control this upgrade offer will be via original invoices/purchasing.... otherwise it'll get too messy with 3rd party sales. But, who knows in the world of RED - it's been a straannnnnnnge week!

+1 here on Terry's question. Originally I purchased 4 new 64GB cards when I bought my Epic. Eventually I sold those on reduser and bought several 128gb SSD through eBay, reduser and even craigslist as well as a couple of 256gb cards. Are those cards not eligible for the mini-mag upgrade program since I didn't purchase them directly from Red? No worries either way, I'm grateful for all Red is doing. Just trying to clarify. Thank you.

This was posted a little while ago...

The media deal is based on what media you purchased directly with RED.

Bummer, I guess. This would seem to quash the great majority of "deals" unless you have a close friend you can work with, one on one.

The reality is RED put this "deal" together to really, really help out and it is a pretty stellar when you consider things like the $5K Accessory Credit, the Accessories that come with the Weapon Package, and now this "help" to get shooters up to MINI-MAGs.

It's funny because somebody gave me some heck about "hey other companies allow camera upgrades" which is fine, but no company does anything like this.

I wouldn't try squeezing too much out of this concept. This was something birthed out of RED listening to shooters/customers and it's utterly crazy that they are doing this at all because those 1.8" REDMAGs that RED receives can't be resold by them. This is another thing they are "eating" to assist with the upgrade.

This is great for guys and gals who have just a few mags, but this also plays a major impact for those who have "a whole bunch" of mags because it's saving some insane money at that point for those who need to outfit multiple cameras and all that.

This is a very good thing.

while you guys are at it, why not call lacie and wester digital and ask for better trade in deals for your old used slow hard drives every time they release a new/faster solution... :)

Common, if you want to make better deals than what red is offering here its easy to put up a want to buy / sell thread.

Also, consider this. Red was basically saying hey if you guys have bought media from us at full price we want to give you a break on going to the new format. Most of us when we buy media on the used market are not paying full price. I think what RED is offering makes sense and keeps it simple for them which is good for everybody.

What I do wonder though is if Jarred would be open to the idea of selling the Mags that they take in during this trade-in at reduced costs. It would be sold as is with a 7 day warranty to prevent DOA issues. Hopefully those trade-ins are not going to the trash bin. I guess the question is, are they able to certify the media quickly enough to not pull important resources away from other areas. Thoughts?

I thought Jarred said there were legal concerns re: Red being involved in recycling media.

I want to be very clear here that my intent was not to "put one over" on RED with this idea. I just imagined all those 1.8 SSDs going back to RED with no future use planned. RED has previously said they cannot re-use them. I hope that turns out NOT to be the case and they can re-use, even re-sell them.

I know that I will eventually move to mini-mags but for now, my new Dragonized Scarlet will probably fill my 64s pretty quickly and I just thought I'd like a "bridge" solution to when I go full 512s and mini.

Again, no malice or disrespect meant toward RED. And I don't mean to appear unappreciative, just pragmatic. If RED can't re-use the media, I thought it could take a detour until it reaches its inevitable end back at RED.

To be clear, this trade-in deal is huge and much appreciated. I will eventually take advantage of it, for sure.

I wonder what happened with all the REDMAGs that were used on the military project and from where the first battle tested cameras originated.
All went to the trash? OH NO!

I think RED should take back the mags. Remove the guts. Fill it with something of weight, ask Jim to sign them and sell them as paperweights in the RED store.

EDIT: I will eventually take them up on this as well. For now I use em and glad I didn't sell them.

Seagate has replaced my failed hard drives with refurbished drives. Maybe it's the paying for it as a new purchase that gets them in trouble. I wonder if there is some legalese that could protect them. Thing is, any media can fail at any time. A new mag could fail a week into owning it. Fortunately, RED have been very good when it comes to certifying their media and I have seen a pretty good track record with the RED SSDs. But it would be too bad if the media ended up in a trash can. Maybe Jarred would be kind enough to let me know when that will happen and where the trash can is so I can dumpster dive. :-)

Haha - yeah, I have always been grossed out by those dumpster diver videos but I may have to reconsider.

Wow Red do it again!!!!
I do have a question about the logistics of it all this and how it might all work. I live in South Africa and have 5 x 1.8 Mags, I would like to replace all of these but if I have to send all 5 cards back together I will be without any media for at least 2 weeks. That is how long it would take to send my cards and then receive the new ones.
Before people start saying just rent some cards for that time. It is not possible to rent cards on there own here in South Africa I have already checked with the rental houses that do have Epics for a job earlier this year.

I'd be right there next to you!

I thought it it was more of an IP concern though. If that be the case Red will be shredding those MF's

You don't have to send your media back until you actually receive the new ones. So, you will never be without. Just be clear that you will get a credit when you send each one back, whenever that is. BUT - I believe that credit is only a credit to be used in the store. So, if I am correct (and I have been wrong before), it can't be applied against this new mini-mag purchase, just for future purchases. It calls for some strategic thinking about the order in which you purchase things.

Mmm - if it's a store credit, that'll be a shame - much rather a discount off the mags themselves - but, guess we'll see soon. Suppose a store credit makes sense in terms of RED's convenience.

Maybe there'll be a way to order then have a retro-active discount applied... or, send in the Mags 'first' then have the discount applied pre-purchase.

Time will tell!

Does this Deal apply even if you have not yet put your name down for the Weapon upgrade?

Yes. It is my understanding that it is independent of any Weapon issues. These same mini-mags can be used presently on all cameras equipped with the mini-mag module.
