Idea Regarding Mini-mag Trade-in Program

It does occur to me that you could buy the mini-mags first; then send in your old mags for the credit. Then, use the credit to buy the new mini-mag module.

Brent clarified the Red Mag trade in - seems it can be used to reduce the price of the mags.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...APON-UPGRADE&p=1499691&viewfull=1#post1499691

Jance, let's say you have 5 REDMAG 1.8" 64GB you want to trade-in for 5 RED MINI-MAG 512GB. So, you contact your rep, buy 5 5 RED MINI-MAG 512GB. RED issues you an RMA to send in your 5 REDMAG 1.8" 64GB. Once we receive the 5 REDMAG 1.8" 64GB, we credit you $950 for each one. If you want to leave credit on your account, great. If not, we can cut you a check/wire for the credit.
TO CLARIFY - This is totally different than the $5000 accessory credit with WEAPON. That has to be credit on your account to be used by you for future purposes.

I have 8 large mags (mostly 256 and 240)....im not sure what to do, like maybe i could sell them for more than the trade in cuz of their size? id trade them for smaller mags, but idk what to do really, especially since i sublease my package out and have no control of the kit... i tried reaching out to my rep but he's swamped cuz if there is a time table to this I'm probably unable to partake anyway

Please take this in the spirit this is intended...

For the love of God or whatever you hold dear can we please just stop.

I don't exactly what the prices were for the REDMags before the price reduction, and I don't much care. I do know I spent more than 15k < 20k worth of media at a whack, and the fact that RED is offering me almost a thousand dollars a throw to trade in media that I've had the use of since the middle of 2011 is just crazy.

That it isn't even tied to a Weapon upgrade is crazier.

How about just two words folks - Thank you.

Steve

Brian - here is my own take on your situation:

In the RED store, your SSDs are worth about $1450 each; the retail on the 240s is that and I imagine people would value the 256s about the same. Trouble is, everyone knows that the world is going to the mini-mags and this limits the useful life of the SSDs somewhat. And, keep in mind the 240 mini-mags are $1400.

Of course, yours are still of practical value in everyday use but their life is limited by this transition to mini-mags. This is why I thought I'd find someone like you to trade up my 64s (plus giving you something extra) while you could still get the $950 in the trade-up). The problem is, given the clarified terms of the trade-up program, you can't trade in any units you didn't originally buy from RED, plus - if we were to swap, I could no longer eventually trade the ones I got from you to RED for mini-mags.

Given all this, I wonder if someone would really pay too much more than $950 for your REDmags. Obviously, if that's the case, the trade-in is the easiest route. This, of course, assume your SSDs were purchased directly from RED.

Hope that helps you come to a decision that works for you.

Lets not forget there are still REDONEs out there that have SSD slots with no way to upgrade to MINI-MAGs anyway so resale market should be fine. I don't even think the 240s work with those so the 256s should work just fine for those cameras.

Exactly Samir, that's my only quandary. I still have my RedOne, and though it doesn't really get used much anymore, the RedMags made it a far more useful camera, so I think I'll hold back a couple of the 256's and trade the rest in on the minis

Stephen, don't take this wrong (lol) but you should read this therad from the beginning (and in its entirety) if you want to understand the germination of the idea. As I stated several times, it was NOT meant to express any dissatisfaction with RED's offer. In truth, it looked like there was a "gap" where no one, not even RED, was benefitting from this "gap" and it seemed to be like there was an opportunity for a win all around.

Since I started this thread, more details have come out and, for whatever reason, the ability to trade the media to everyone's benefit looks like it is just not going to be there. It woulds seem a real shame if a lot of perfectly functional 1.8 SSDs are headed for the trash heap but, if that is the case, so be it.

So, be clear, this was not an expression of complaint or dissatisfaction; it was a simple attempt at a win-win, no losers, plan.

Welp. I got my cards second hand from NFL Films so as soon as my weapon time comes to send in dragon I'll be looking to sell a 256GB and 2 128GB redmags if anyone is interested.

Hi Terry,

Just so you know buddy, I did read the thread from the beginning and in it's entirety.

You are very active user and a positive contributor to the RED community, and I'm am quite confident that you were trying to do good, to benefit all parties, and doing so with nothing but good intentions.

That said, RED is doing the original purchasers of media at full price from RED a service, and what is that old saying about a gift horse :-)

Frankly it's been a pretty rough week around here, and I just wanted the folks at RED and their loyal customers to have a clear and easy win, without having the community expect to optimize ever offering.

My time running the Outpost side of the business for Light Iron gave me a unique understanding of the real and material risks associated with access to previously utilized media and how top of mind such risks are with major productions, so I understand why RED doesn't want to have anything to do with swapping media around, or any kind of recycling. Further your suggestions just make this whole process more complex and/or more expensive for RED to execute.

I let some of my frustration from the week show through, sorry Terry, my bad.

I should have stated my case more carefully. That said, I do worry that if we keep pushing on every good deed, RED might just get tired of doing good deeds. :)

well said, the whole Red Team really does their best to bend to the needs for all users. Lets try not to break them

@Stephen - I do appreciate your concerns but one last note: I wasn't, in any way, expecting RED to manage or participate in the administration of such a plan. And, as such, there was absolutely no "pushing" to be done nor any risk of "breaking" anyone. The details of the plan had not been announced and so my suggestion was just a way to achieve some efficiency for REDusers, with no involvement at all from RED. The truth be told, I was originally not going to post anything here and just quietly try to arrange some swaps for myself. Then I thought it would be a way for others to have some advantages as well. Of course, I am glad we all found out that the deal applies only to original media owners before anyone went down this path. For any individual, this is a great offer from RED. I do have to admit, I still cringe to think of all those perfectly good SSDs going into the recycling bin. :-(

Talked to my rep, only mags you bought yourself during a certain window are in the program. Wasn't sure where to voice my two cents thread wise, but I recently upgraded an MX to Dragon and had to buy additional 1.8 mags to satisfy the rental house I sublease with. Sadly 2 of the 5 mags I bought direct from Red are about two weeks too late to be traded in, I am not sure what exactly cemented the cut off date and I am the last guy to make a stink about anything with Red, but it does kind of suck for me that my recently purchased ones can't be in the program, I mean they have almost no wear and tear and are 240gb so I certainly didn't buy them this late to try and get one over on the trade in (would of bought 64s then), in fact it looks like the house kind of hosed me here since had it been up to me I would own 5 minis now and not 5 1.8s to begin with, I suggested switching over the second minis came out two years ago so I could avoid this situation I am now in... Anyway just wanted to vent, don't really expect any help on this issue from Red or anyone else...and Terry I thought your idea was wonderful to help out the RU community. I suppose I'll just sell my mags on the open market or w/e...Thanks guys

What's the limit on Red Mags and trade ins?

A time window of purchase? If so, the time window should be added to the public info and data.... I'd assumed all Mags purchased directly from Red were able to be upgraded... guess not.

What is being called a time window or limit is simply a cut off date of original purchase from RED to qualify.

February 23rd is that date.
That's less than two months ago.

Remember, Jarred let slip about the same time that there would be a trade in program for the 1.8 SSD's.
So, incorporating a cut off date makes a lot of sense - imagine the rush on current 1.8 SSD's in the RED store as people realized that they could get an additional discount by buying new just to trade in.
For their gain at RED's loss.

RED has also regulated the offer to only those that bought their media from RED. While some will regret buying used over the years, this also protects our community by eliminating a back door via auction sites to get around the intent of the program.

RED is not about fueling the greed of speculators - that's a good approach in my books.

No worries Brian, was just looking for clarification and you've linked it all.

Probably trade up my X4 64's and get side mini mag. Not a lot of point in trading the couple of 128's I have (still sealed - LOL)... guess I'll end up keeping them as emergency mags alongside the 1.8 side ssd I'll be left with once I move to mini-mags. No Weapon move for me, sticking at the Dragon I think.

You are completely right on all of this, including it makes sense why Red needs a cut off...Or there would be a run on 64GBs to try and pull one over on Red. But I bought on 3/09/15 some 240s with no intention of pulling anything over on anyone, simply cuz rental made me and now I'm stuck with them while trading my one package up to Weapon is the issue...and I knew damn well this would happen to me for two years is whats frustrating is all lol... Its like the ultimate foresight i had, thats why its annoying me, nothing to do with Red really haha

Looks like we have been working the same numbers Andy. However, I may send in 128 as well. Looking at it simply from a storage standpoint, it's getting 4X the storage capacity of the 128 for a $1500 net cost. Pretty hard to resist.

Weapon is a different matter - not as simple as the decision on media. Definitely burning calories as my brain tries to calculate project timelines, client needs, ROI - not to mention that I was hoping to invest in some new glass later this year. Hmm, did I forget the roof that needs to be replaced after this past winter?

Since we have been assured that both the Scarlet and EPIC lines will be continued for a long time to come, I'm sure there will be a healthy market for 1.8 media for quite a while.

I agree with pretty much everything that is being said except, maybe, this. Knowing that the ultimate trend is toward mini-mags (because Scarlet and Epic can use them, too), and comparing prices, I am not so sure folks will be rushing to buy 1.8s. Personally, I'd love to have some 128s or 256s in the short term for my Dragon (as I only have 64s now) but why drop money on 1.8s (which can't be traded) when I can get bigger "bang for the buck" by trading in my 64s for 512s at a net of $1500 per?
