I hope RED doesn't mind my posting this but unless they actually have a use for all those 1.8 SSD mags that will be sent in for trade-in, I can't imagine why they would care. Even though they probably can't sponsor it themselves, I would think they'd even like this idea...

Since all REDmags of 64GB or more are created equal for this trade-in, anyone planning to do the trade should consider passing their larger ones along to others in trade for the 64s. As REDusers, why not clear the market of the smaller ones first and keep the 128s+ out there as long as possible for those of use who will stick with the standard 1.8 REDmags for a little longer.

I, for one, would certainly love to make such a trade for my own four 64GB cards.

Thoughts? Can we develop an informal swap program? A thread on RU?

EDIT: Per David B's request, some additional info:

The "deal" is that you can buy the new 512GB mini-mags at the RED Store price of $2450 and send in your old mags, 64GB or greater, for a one-to-one credit of $950 each. You get the credit AFTER you buy the mags and THEN send your old ones in for credit. You can only do this ONCE - i.e. you have to order all the new mini's you want to replace your old ones in one order.

What is not clear to me is whether there is any official mechanism for trading in mags you have purchased from 3rd parties. Also, a somewhat subtle but important issue is that it might seem you are actually getting store credit (which can be used against this mini-mag purchase) so you will want to plan the order of your RED purchases "strategically" to take advantage of this in the most advantageous way.

CLARIFICATION / NEW INFO:
Per Brent (in another thread): "If you want to leave credit on your account, great. If not, we can cut you a check/wire for the credit." So, you can take your cash out, if you want.

EDIT:

The media deal is based on what media you purchased directly with RED.

This may kill any hopes of this idea. I feel bad for anyone who traded away their direct purchased media tom upgrade via secondary market.

I posted in another thread, but figured I'd ask here.... what are the details of the Trade-in?

Can't find anything on the site - and leaving my Rep alone this week (as he'll be dealing with lots of Weapon questions, I'd presume)... so, how does the Red deal work?

Andy - best to await the official RED response but I think I understand it pretty well...

When you decide to go the mini-mag route, which is the future for RED, you can buy new 512GB min-mags at the retail price of $2450. Then, for each one you bought, you can send in any 1.8 mag, 64GB or more, for a $950 credit - for each. Effective price for the new mag is $1500.

Important to note this is a one time order for each customer. You can't do multiple buys with these conditions. So, however many 1.8s you have, best to buy that many mini-mags all at once and then send in your old ones.

So, the issue is that a 64 is worth the same as a 128 or 256 in this deal. Why not share the love and swap your big cards with your less fortunate friends who can't yet afford the min-mag transition? Make sense?

Thanks Terry.

Shame it's a one time only deal, guess I'll wait and see what the options are for me. I was going to just stock up on 1.8's and stick with my Epic Dragon... but this is quite tempting in terms of upgrades, even though you have to factor in the new side module.

A question to RED: Since I have now been told that serial numbers will be checked and that "registered ownership" will be checked for the mag trade-in, how can we "legally" exchange/sell/swap mags (under any conditions) and be sure to maintain registered ownership?

Thanks (for all you guys do), RED team!

Thanks Terry.

Yes - there is, no doubt, a financial hit to the upgrade since you have to buy a new module and the mini-mags are, like all RED media, a bit pricey. OTOH, I think the migration is inevitable for all of us. It's only a matter of time. The reason to do it early is to get the speed advantage of the min-mags.

this is a loophole? i can buy 64GB new or used ones from cheap price and trade in for 512GB mini.

This is a one for one trade-in. You get $950 towards each MINIMAG per REDMAG that is sent in. For example, say if you have a total of 5 REDMAG 1.8” (Any size excluding 48GB), you will need to order 5 MINIMAGs to get the credit applied to each.

Wow!!! - just thought I'd look at US vs UK prices.... being UK based myself).

Currently a 512 mini is 2,400.00 US (that's 1,606.97 GBP) on the US store & UK/EU a 512 mini is 2,475.00 EUR (that's 1,786.11 GBP)... gulp, hope the trade in value is 'either' $950 or EUR 950.

Guess that's potentially another thing to factor in.

You had to buy it directly from RED, not second hand

This seems to be a complication but, per my question above (to RED, it seems to potentially punish anyone who legitimately acquired media over the years from other RED users.

I am not trying to propose anything sleazy here, or instigate bad behavior. But the RED position on this is that they can't re-use the old media so it has to be destroyed. Seems a shame to "waste" the interim potential in those larger mags. Most of them will end up back at RED eventually, anyway.

EDIT: Sorry, my original post said "can re-use the old media..." Typo - now corrected to read "can't..."

"punishing people" is a bit harsh given the generosity of this deal Terry...

Hey Jarred, I posted this in the other thread but wasnt sure if you saw it.

"Hey Jarred, This is an incredible deal! First and foremost thank you for doing this! I mean, truly remarkable! In the wake naysaying, you still offer more! It's proof that though, you cant make everyone happy, you sure as hell try! Really incredible! My question is, if I order 2 mini's and im trading in 2x64's. Can the credit be used towards those mini's? Or do we have to pay the full $2450 per mini-mag up front.. Then get a credit of $950 to be used on other items?"
Just wanted to figure out the best way to proceed.

Thanks!

No, no, no, no!!! Sorry for the choice of words. It's a fabulous deal - as I noted in the first post. I can't wait to take advantage of it. If you read all my posts here, you can see that I am just trying to get the most out of the media that is out there before it is "retired." Other than the potential administrative issues, it wouldn't seem to hurt RED at all. If it did, I wouldn't propose it.

I hope you know that I am NOT one of those ungrateful people regarding this while Weapon upgrade opportunity. You guys ROCK!

What is the actual deal?

Terry,

Can you edit the first post in the thread to let us know what the actual deal being offered is?

Jarred - to reiterate/extend the question I posed in my post #5 above...

Is there a way to officially change ownership of mags, like there is with cameras? Certainly a legitimate secondary market exists for REDmags. I am sure many have traded hands before this deal ever came around.

Hey guys thanks for offering this awesome deal!

I'm trying to see how to go around upgrading my 5x64gb cards. Is there any chance the 950 credits can go towards the mini mag bundle: http://www.red.com/store/products/red-mini-mag-package

or the 4 packs? http://www.red.com/store/products/red-mini-mag-4-pack

Now - that would be cool!

If all in the same order, being able to use X1 card to get the discount on a new side SSD and then use remaining 1.8's as credit off multiple mags... that would be a good way to soften the blow (which is already a nice offer from RED - thanks Jarred!).

Or maybe base on what you bought originally? I purchased a 4 pack of 64's and X2 128's when I purchased my Epic MX (now Dragon).

But it would be great if we can use a 4 pack (original purchase) to offset against a new 4 pack... the savings would help pay for the side SSD :)

I was thinking the same thing, given that I have 4x 256gb redmags. If it were no difference to Red, why not give someone larger capacity mags to keep in the wild, and I could send in the 64gb mags for an "early retirement". Again, if Red is only going to destroy the mags anyway.

Either way, it's a very lovely offer on behalf of Jarred and Red. Thanks for always doing what you can to help us make the transition from one stage to another!

Per David's request, I have added some VERY IMPORTANT thoughts and information to the original post. Be sure to look back!
