  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC - REDVOLT XL Module

hmm, but the quad module takes 4 batteries and drains them one at the time... and also the side handle battery is in standby until all else is out. I do not know to much about cameras batteries but to me it seems like having a XL module togheter with a quad should then be hypothetically possible. Then seeing the XL as the first battery in the chain and the side handle as the last. I guess there would have to be some programing made to allow all that to happen, as I understand these batteries are "smart" and provides the brain with their status so the brain can jump from one battery to the next as they run out. With that unproved logic of mine I have high hopes that RED makes it possible. So there for I order this unit with confidence :)

I'm pretty sure the module decides which battery to use, not the camera. Allowing the camera to decide which battery to enable would just be too dangerous. If the software malfunctions and accidentally enables two batteries simultaneously you could have a meltdown. The only reason you can have a side handle battery and back module battery at the same time is because they are on essentially separated circuits, like the power input jack and the side handle battery.

I wouldn't be too worried though. I don't think you'll need or want that extra module with on camera charging.

You are probably right.

But to me the XL's are not lasting long enough. I always try to go without cables when being on a dolly or crane or such. or even just when on a tripod in a studio. Then I want the batteries to just last. Not having to swap them or charge them to often and when using FF, Bolt and extra monitor the camera drains the batteries quite quickly. One XL then last like half an hour or so. Then it would be perfect if RED could make it so I could put 3 XL's on the camera plus a volt in the side handle... with all the pins in the back of the camera and reds tech guys I really hope that they can make this possible. Or I need one of these Vlocks, bricks and charger aswell, something I really try to stay away from but if it is as you say then I guess i have to go that rout as well.

Edit: Or I might get one of these car battery in pelli case kind of power suplies that can just sit on the dolly or hang in the tripod. but then I have to carry that around as well.. would be so nice just to be able to run of XL's and Volts for all occasions.

I wish stackable battery-modules would be supported since i have a quad and a dual and did some time-lapse-tests. ;)
I hope the hardware can detect and use more than one DMSC-power-module and its just a matter of software.

you got my vote:iagree:

Is that confirmed, that the XL back module doesn't work alongside the quad module?

I have not read anywhere that it's fur sure so that they can not be used together. The assumptions here are being made since you can not use two quads at the same time or even a quad and a dual volt. I will confirm how it works when I get it. waiting for RED to ship.

I asked the ibc squad team via text ... Maybe I can get an answer. (They've got both at the booth)

I know, module and side handle is a different thing, but since that combination works, and multiple batteries also work in a single module, it "feels" possible. Maybe it really is just a software issue.

Guys, note this module is still not released and the support for it in firmware is in beta. So over the next few weeks, things will be worked on and we will have more clarity on what it will and will not be able to do at first shipping.

Great Brent! We trust you to make it, no pressure :)

Awesome, thanks for the heads up, Brent.
Please feed us with the weight specs when those are known and locked :)
Thanks in advance.

How long does an XL battery last on an Epic? and a Scarlet? I mean just the camera with the LCD and the side handle. I don´t know if this the thread to post this question but I am thinking on getting this module. Thanks

40 minutes + is my estimate.

How much is the weight of the module + an XL battery attached to it? (Is it lighter than using a Redbrick?)

Is that all you've been getting on an XL? I've been getting much more than this, well over an hour plus.

Then I got longer minutes than you :)

No actually, when I think of it I usually use it with other things on camera. So yes an hour is probably more accurate.
