  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN Update July 25th.

Very excited by the model with the lens/lens mount bolted on.

[Edit] So the DOF markers on the lens of that one uber-prototype is interesting. If the distance scale is in meters then that implies we're looking at a sensor that would roughly be 35mm/APS-C sized...

Yup, but if the 4 view stereo is dimensionalized from 2d footage (using more standard techniques) then maybe it doesn't look anywhere as good as it could from a true S-3d/4view+ source with full complexity and naturally perceivable full 3d texture.

So MKBHD's "Method acting" for what could be is not so great lol... Direction.---> "Look quietly amazed!" ... "WTF? OK..", "How's this ?" (What you see on the video).

MKBHD's comment "Looks like a moto-Z had a baby with a tractor..."

I'm like "Dude what kind of farm have you been hanging out on, like Skunkworks tractor factory????" Lol (no disrespect clearly this kid/boy does not spend much time on the farm).


I feel like saying "Nope... looks like Darth Vader's smartphone, (if he had one...)" (seriously).


(watched that segment five times; it's an illusion the phone does not bend); however does raise the question does the Titanium look and feel like titanium over the Aluminum One ? (I ordered a Titanium just to cover all bases (first ten minutes of original announcement)).

Lol, I was going say a Lamborghini tractor. I sometimes tell people we have a Lamborghini dealership in my home town fir a joke. Don't know exactly what Lamborghini products they sell.

On the MKBHD youtube video (he's a smart guy)... He sticks the 'Phone/HYDROGEN" in his pocket and I'm going "Noooooooooooooooooooooooo...!"...

Somehow feels wrong to just shove it in your pocket with your car keys and jangling change and all that.

Then I'm thinking, how do you "Wear" the HYDROGEN?

Kinda reminds me of the tech support guys we had in the early 90's that would wear their Apple Newton on a belt... Or contractors / machinists I know ten years ago with an otter box holster/belt arrangement...

Now I'm thinking slightly dorky NASA engineer circa 1967 to 1977 pocket protector + mechanical pencil and pens + Hydrogen in front shirt pocket (lol).


As a kid I always wanted one of those aluminum briefcases hand cuffed to one's wrist. I feel like I want my own Pelicase for this phone / HYDROGEN; maybe the "Murse" man-purse needs a whole re-think..? [In "Ghost in the Shell" the briefcase housing falls away to a sub machine gun from the briefcase handle], Something to present to your hand a HYDROGEN....


Just "Feels" so wrong to shove that in your pocket, especially with that pancake lens.

Maybe on a chain around one's neck like "-Director's viewfinder"... or like Flavor Flav or the Beasty Boys... ;-)

Ok, firstly his reaction, was like what am I looking at (did he move it around a lot?). Jim says four view. I am guessing it is actually my old easy 3D proposal. This would give 3D in landscape and in portrait mode. Way cheaper to do.

So, how do you wear it. A hard case. You can get substances hader than diamond (nano diamond for one) but this is not practical yet. Silica carbide (SiC) is 90% as hard, can be coated (however tricky) which I'm trying to source to put on my car (warning most of the paint sealants are BS, and even had a leading one tell me obnoxiously that SiC in black, but pure is clear, it s or nband other impurities that causes blackness. Most hard ones are very impure formulars much weaker then what they lead you to believe and movable off the surface).

Another solution is a skin case with a flip lid, and maybe a fold over case with a slider or multiple fold skin to reveal the camera. But you need to keep it thin, even soft bendable.

However, a case is going to restrict heat transfer, so it needs to be a special one, maybe with a high heat transference material zone over the heat sink (preferably the whole back).

You can then slip it in your pocket with keys. But tthe truth is it is already ruggedused. The only things that really need to be protected from scratching damage etc, is the screen and the camera module (I hate my camera module sticking out, prime for scratching). The rest of the product enclosure can be designed to be replacable, clicking and off, even the screen and camera module cover). My similar mobile, the back clips around it. So, a clip on sheild for the screen and the camera module are the two things needed, with replacable back.

Also the metal part is shiny, which make me wonder what hardened surface it might be coated with.

Now, as far as cases, a case might leave the back exposed totally or over the metal part for heat transfer.

If people haven't noticed Apple has announced it I'll get selling an Red Raven package. I wonder if they might one day sell the hydrogen as an ultimate Pro work phone. Replacing the red symbol with a red apple is not such a stretch to fir a suecuak iOS version. I know a number of people might get too excited by this, but it's unlikely to happen unless there is a meeting of same mind on this (but please bring on x86 compatable windows 10).

Well ten years ago I was trying to talk Red into making a director's viewfinder pocket camera.
 
One of the things that MKBHD is known for is level headed objective reviews. When he drove his new Tesla P100D he dead pans "It's quick." That car does 0-60 in 2.3 seconds. His response here is pretty consistent to his other reviews.

As someone who has worked in mobile for the last seven years, everything I am seeing from this phone is next level. I love the use of Kevlar, and it definitely has that "RED" design sensibility. In a market that isn't bringing much in the way of "ground breaking" features to smart phones, this has several that stand out. What this display is capable of is a complete mystery, what the internal camera will be capable of, and what the modules will enable.

This product is completely weaponized to impact the market at an 1100.00 price point. Thats roughly what you are paying on contract for a Galaxy S8 or an iPhone 7 Plus. It looks like the ultimate mobile content creation device, and if it shoots some kind of RAW format its going to KILL.

Given that the case of HYDROGEN is well engineered / sturdy I'm thinking more of a high quality hard wearing leather case, ether for the camera module arrangement or the phone itself.

[A few years ago I did a free lance design project with a group of master saddlers in the U.K. (That also export world wide). The U.K. has some of the best functional leather in the world/tanneries. Might knock out a few samples as soon as we get HYDROGEN + modules in hand. Theres' a lot that can be done with a combination of titanium, carbon fiber and other synthetic elements with really high quality leather and TRUE craftsmanship. ].
 
Lol Mike! The contract price verses the duscyntef advanced order price doesn't really equate that much, does it? What a the Titanium hydrogen going work out to on contract $2k? It; s just a lot more. Personally I would have loved to see 4 camera filming included, and half the price. I've got to get a lot if camera far, a whopping helium busting computer system, and a new whopping TV. I've measured up the small 950 tonight, but.the reviews have stopped me. If I'm going have to spend $4kAU on a camera to get it to multipoint film, that's too much.

Hmm, a deep marbled red leather case? A foldover like the one I'm using here, which is an S5 I modified would work, but thiness. I day this because it looks like it already has enough protection around the phone.

Your saying that the on contract price is different? 1100 over a 24 month payment plan is still like 299 up front and then 35 per month for 24 months. Its the same thing. And as for the Titanium model, how is that different then any of the special edition phones? Example: Iron Man edition Galaxy S7 was similar. Remember that many people in the mass market consider phones to be luxury items. Nothing wrong with having a product for those folks too.
 
Eric, I'm going say this, a dark red leather flap over the front of the phone that anchors clip like into the holes to the side of the back, extremely stylish, should look a bit like a stylish old fashioned hard cover book. But the camera module, something that could reach out and cover it. A section could be anchored in the two holds on top, and cover above the heat sink? You then just flip a hinged flap around to get to reveal the camera, which is very old school looking camera case design.
 
I see nobody cared to comment on the 4-view game MKBHD got to play with...
Don't get me wrong, photography/cinematography with H1 will be very interesting and I know it will make me very happy, but opening up to the gaming market, that's not something to be underestimated!

To Mike's point, I paid $1000 about 2 years ago for an unlocked iPhone 6s (not the bigger plus model) with max memory. It's not a special edition - other than it being unlocked (ie. not tied to any one carrier). Hydrogen is only incidentally a smartphone. It seems to me we're getting all the magic stuff that Red is delivering for very little more than a vanilla 'phone from the other guys.

Over here we can just pay the monthly price. An aluminium hydrogen could be $99au a month over 24 months, if we are fortunate. I imagine be this might be the first to $129 a month over 24 months. But 24 months might be a good part of the life of the product under normal use.

Yes, I paid for my $1000 iPhone on monthly payments too since it was convenient to do so. It's still $1000. (A bit more in fact.)
 
That's one person out of 7 billion so far. The point being how many in the market place are going to do this, and can you get a deal that is cheaper than buying outright and going with a cheap service provider?
 
They are not so generous over here. I? As looking at doing that on the note, if the deal meant I was paying like upto $29 a month unlimited ontop of the price.
 
Lot's of "good" consumers out there that just lineup their pockets for vacuuming which is bad behaviour for the price for the rest of us.
 
Okay, since I'm on board, a few questions (ideas?) have arisen.

Can this phone do SLAM?

Will it require 2 cameraphones to do 3D? 4 cameraphones to do holographic video?

If 8 cameras are arranged in a cube facing inwards, would the H4V codec be able to encapsulate the entire volume to the stream? Seamlessly?

Will the other cameras have to be RED brand if desiring to do holographic video?

Does it have inside out positional tracking?

Could it be used as a high quality 3D scanner of objects and environments?

It sounds heavy, so it wouldn't be very practical to wear as an HMD (with head mount "module")?

Will the Holographic system replace the need for a green screen?

Will the H4V CODEC be made available to 3D app developers and game engine creators before the phone is released?

Is the H4V CODEC representable in a 3D app, thus making it manipulatable in post? Is it seen as 3D point cloud data, or ... ?

Is this going to completely up-end the VFX industry?


Will the H4V CODEC be viewable in other AR/VR HMD devices?


I bought the aluminum model. Should I upgrade to the titanium model (for everything that I'm thinking above)? :D

Thank you for your inventiveness, Jim! I couldn't afford the original RED camera when it came out 10 years ago. But I never lost hope that some day something revolutionary would hit, and I'd be lucky to be a part of it.

Here we are.
