  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN Update July 25th.

Jim, you keep saying we are probably going to be interested in more than one. Any reason other than multicam? Or just that its that awesome? :P

Oh, my it has two, TWO cameras. But the original image rendering had, One ONE camera.

Now I'm a bit more intrigued. If it had 4 cameras it would be a buy. The industry hasn't caught on too much, that to shoot stereo in bother portrate and landscape positions requires 4 cameras+ to do it right (plus Stereo on 45 degree). Plus, it has the same round shaped camera module as my new Moto and the same flash unit shape, and moto like module connector. The Moto design crew does anybody know if they are still in the states?

Zack, put two together and you have better depth sensing 3D from a larger medium format spread.

So, that phone in the picture, does it match up to the hydrogen render.

The flash unit and overall shape, is the same. So, I wonder if the manufacturer, or design company, of the module is the same?

Amazing and can't wait to see it! My only comment would be it's very masculine and maybe too tech looking for a phone? I can't see it appealing to women, nor can I see it at a business meeting. It niche, but surely it needs to have broader appeal for the content creators to adopt the technology? Just my thoughts

Ali, obviously at Jim's business meetings. :)

I think they would put it in a case anyway.

Do women by phones, good point Ali, obviously they do. A bit of cosmetic changes, maybe a second case back for women, maybe a stick on purplesband pinky red dots on top of the ted dot in the Red symbol.

On the phone store display you show the two different looks.

The Huawei P9 has that feature as well. I like it, as it means that you're getting really good monochrome images - as good as you can get for that sensor size, more or less.

hehe do you have the Hasselblad TrueZoom kamera Mod for it?

Well Joel, I might have had I bought the experience exoensive model and they had descent 4k in it. Just a lowly fill in phone until something good enough comes out. For companies really have shot themselv s in the foot regarding video. Good market there, but the standalone market trump's attention for better featues I feel.

Now, let's look at that video.

Ok, heat sink, I was right.

But basically no details that would make me want to preorder one. :)

That module looks interesting, was in the patent, but what about.the multipointvamwea me file from the patent. That's what makes a phone worth that much to me.

I'm wondering how my phone holding styles going go in this. I pinch and rotate. So I'll have to pinch the ridge between the notches (but I wabt good grip and don't want to drop it).

for me at least, i wouldnt look at it as a phone. there is nothing that could take me away from the apple operating system, especially that all my productions share ical calendars with me and how all my contacts are synced with apple contacts, notes, messages and again, ical. the industry is pretty married to apple.

but if it created a media watching a creating device, that is what's interesting to me.
i could see using it instead of a pocket camera when im on a multicamera, steadicam or crane situation on a job and i have my own way of capturing some c-roll footage that holds up (which is what i currently use my pocket camera for.)
as well, i travel a lot, and even an ipad is too big for me to whip out on a plane just to watch a video or play around on a game and my iphone is too small, since i go for the smaller version of the iphone because the plus is too big to have in my pocket at all times.

so i ordered one in the first minutes, but ill wait to see the camera capabilities to see how far ill go with my order.

MKBHD just released a new video on the HYDROGEN.
Hands on with the prototype

The module is even better than I expected... it looks like it can be small but with HELIUM internals, powerful. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. The fact that Jim has compressed some serious computing power into a small camera package suggests that we can use multiples of these to cover a shoot like a swarm of robots. One camera setup on a wide shot, one on an extreme CU, one on a medium CU, one each on profile shots, and even one from an actor's POV. And all potentially controlled by Fool Control.

That gives me six angles for edit. I may order two more for overhead drone shots as you can never have too many PsOV in edit. '-)

Also mini article on MSN (see if this link works)...

On the MKBHD youtube video (he's a smart guy)... He sticks the 'Phone/HYDROGEN" in his pocket and I'm going "Noooooooooooooooooooooooo...!"...

Somehow feels wrong to just shove it in your pocket with your car keys and jangling change and all that.

Then I'm thinking, how do you "Wear" the HYDROGEN?

Kinda reminds me of the tech support guys we had in the early 90's that would wear their Apple Newton on a belt... Or contractors / machinists I know ten years ago with an otter box holster/belt arrangement...

Now I'm thinking slightly dorky NASA engineer circa 1967 to 1977 pocket protector + mechanical pencil and pens + Hydrogen in front shirt pocket (lol).

As a kid I always wanted one of those aluminum briefcases hand cuffed to one's wrist. I feel like I want my own Pelicase for this phone / HYDROGEN; maybe the "Murse" man-purse needs a whole re-think..? [In "Ghost in the Shell" the briefcase housing falls away to a sub machine gun from the briefcase handle], Something to present to your hand a HYDROGEN....

Just "Feels" so wrong to shove that in your pocket, especially with that pancake lens.

Maybe on a chain around one's neck like "-Director's viewfinder"... or like Flavor Flav or the Beasty Boys... ;-)

Nice video!!!

Well, you don't have to convince me ;)

But it should have a thread of its own as it might disappear in this thread...

MKBHD`s reaction was a little muted. It didn`t seem like he was in shock either. It reminded me of how I look at a familiar lunch menu... " Will I have a garden salad or a soup?" then he put the camera down.
