  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN Update July 25th.

You guys lobbying for a RED OS must not have ever used a RED camera. Granted cameras in general have very primitive UIs but RED's is really bad. My guess is that not only the OS but most of the phone hardware will be coming more-or-less off the shelf from a large CM. A phone is an order of magnitude more complex than anything RED has done so far, and some of the things RED tends to ignore -- audio, RF, battery life, weight -- are pretty important for a phone.

I just don't think most of us give a rat's ass that this is also a phone. Just saying. Most of us here buying this probably won't replace their phone with it.

This is true in a sense for me as well, as I love the interoperability of the Apple platform. I'm hoping this will become my main mobile media content creation machine (Instagram, etc.) and whatever other channels open up with the tech (RED Channel, etc.). I may only add it to the data plan at first, though having a dedicated business phone does sound like a nice idea in theory...

Just really hoping this manages to pull off 4K RAW with some sort of module eventually. I still believe a lot of us are still crossing our fingers on a pocket cinema camera.

Med, I don't know. They have done a lot so far before this, as long as they get in with an established phone/platform manufacturer.
 
Whether you care or not that it is a phone, it still needs to meet certain criteria if it is in fact a phone. Jim mentions that a carrier will stock this product. No carrier will stock a phone that does not meet basic performance criteria, in fact the major carriers have very strict requirements for phones. The same is true for the FCC and if this product is going anywhere other than the US, other regulatory groups get involved. That's partly why I think this will be a piggyback effort onto a phone coming from a CM. RED may not even particularly want a phone, but the fact that they can get a handheld device with a responsive touch screen, lots of processing power, a passable OS (I too prefer iOS), and proper battery management off-the shelf allows them to focus on what they care about, which in this case seems to be the display. I'm not even sure the camera will be special as they have been very quiet about that.

The other reason I suspect a CM is the order window. It turns out it is much longer than one day. They may need to hit a certain number in order to get a special blend phone from whoever their supplier is. If there are not enough orders this product will go the way of the Meisler Module.

I admit, I could be way off on this. Maybe they are designing a phone from scratch in Irvine. Other small companies have done it. Certainly RED is the kind of company that would attempt it. I look forward to seeing what the results are.
 
Yep.

So Hutchinson's (Vodafone) is the carrier? That is the only potential world wide one here I think, and if it isn't here it's not world wide.

Wait, it's also a phone?! :wink5:

I have my pre-order in, but can't see myself giving up the iPhone + Apple Watch combo I've come to rely on.
 
I am guessing you will find the 'phone' part of it will be more about Mobile Cellular Data Connectivity + WiFi to Capture, Display and Transfer and less about picking it up and putting it to your ear.

High Speed Wireless Data Connectivity will become ubiquitous, regardless of the technology.

Owen, good point. A cheap way for a local guy to replace the screen, a long warranty, and a rugged skin case would be handy.

Jim, about the discount. I have been waiting for a camera phone that can do at least 3 point quality 4kp50 (visually lossless) filming with good controls for less than $1000, or some higher quality sub $3000 camera solution. The better the quality package, the higher the price. Without knowing the camera can do these things before the discount ends, I can not make an honest decision. Also, if the multipoint module and phone will be less than $2k or more? The issue is not just performance, but lifespan and fragility of phones. A ten year rugged solution is worth more for myself.

I'm waiting to buy the first thing that suites that comes out, even if only single sensor rugged camera.

The discount, can it be made to last until after filming details are released Jim?

Also, in respect to what I am after and ordering the hydrogen and the multipoint camera module, which way should I look?

Wayne, on the off-chance this makes it to your inbox, you can opt out and get your money back if the specs don't suit you. You will surely know the specs before delivery, so there is essentially no risk vs high reward.

OBTW... I have six of these on order. '-)
 
Maybe this phone could be the backbone of a new Internet altogther.
 
Wayne, the pre-order payments are fully refundable for any reason prior to delivery. If you make the payment there will probably be enough details released closer to the release date to still allow you to bail out if you want.

The information we have so far says the extra modules (better camera with swap-able lens mounts etc.) won't be available though when the first Hydrogen One base module is released, so you might be waiting for a while to find out just what the Hydrogen One with modules can actually do and how much they'll cost.

Just my opinion, but I think the Hydrogen with modules will end up being the highest-quality compact image-capture device there is. Even if it falls short of your expectations, nobody else will be doing anything better.
 
I think we will get a better idea of capability about the module sooner. But the issue with the module is if it's $2k-$5k which we find out after the phone comes.

I was getting ready to pull on a new upcoming galaxy. Even if I don't get one, I would be happy to see the industry get this sort of product I have been dreaming of for it for so long.
 
Frankly, my spidey hairs have been tingling for a long time.

There has been a 4 camera 3D phone out for years, but using 4 front fullHD cameras. The reason why there are not more 4 rear camera in place of two, is likely uncompetitiveness which is very common these days. It basically one 8k circuit for 4 4k cameras, or one 4k for 4 fullHD, or 4kp100 for 4 4kp25/24. We may see the industry lifttjeur came after seeing this, but likely to see lower quality, but maybe some with higher. There are issues of how far you can push saving to storage, visually lossless 24-40 (extremely generous, but 4 cameras allows a massive saving in compression overlap) which is over 20MB/s, even 10MB/s, double for h264. But no cfast. To get descent frame rates you can double or quadruple.

Jim a plea here? I get good mileage out of Google Fi - it's especially good for international data. Hopefully the wireless chipset will be one that supports Fi...?
