  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matt Duclos's favourable review for new Schneider Cine-Xenar III lenses

Are they available anywhere to purchase ?

Just had a look at them too today at Duclos - 2nd day of SALT 3 - WFO edition. I was very impressed. Evin needed a shower afterwards, but he's like that about glass. I think character wise they are more the cooke S4 camp than in the Zeiss camp - that's a good thing. If you are thinking about the "Panchro's" aka "S4 Mini's" I would think harder about the Schneiders.

Oh, and i wonder if the mounts are interchangeable between EF and PL ?

Thanks

They are interchangeable, however EF only covers to APS-H (1.3x crop factor). The longest lenses (75 and 95) cover full frame.

These have been out for a while, but they have gone down in price. Originally $48K for the MIII set, they are now at $40k.
Same optics as the previous two sets, but a completely different more classical internal focusing.
I found that the 50 had some veiling flare, but that otherwise they were generally sharper and less contrasty than the CP.2's for instance.
Best bokeh of any lenses I have ever seen, extremely low breathing and close focusing across the board (20-30cm I believe).
I also found some coma on a couple of lenses, but nothing earth shattering.
Generally great value for the money.

So if they work for 1.3 crop does that mean they'll porthole on Dragon? (1.2 crop).

Looks like, according to B&H prices, the full set of 6 is $48,410. $9,660 for the 18, and $7750 for each of the rest (25, 35, 50, 75, 95).

Image circle coverage is 31mm.
Dragon is 32mm.

However, that is likely to be for the 18mm lens, probably coverage after that.
To be honest, it's so close one could probably get away with it,

I'm with Evin on this one. We both did a double take while testing them out today. When Matt Duclos said that there was something real good about them I was a bit skeptical, but I've been playing with the frames we shot today for a minute tonight and there's something real nice in there.

We plopped them on an Epic at 5K WS after we finished up the high speed lens tests today. Evin shot my ugly noggin for bit. This was outside of our test and it was a cloudy day.

There was something so wrong with the I and II versions, but the version III glass feels very right. Really nice color, I would say a very smooth rendering. No breathing. Built real well. Really amazing close focus. Exactly what Matt said in his review basically. I can see these as viable glass for commercials and cinema applications for sure. Really can't wait to test them out again. Hell, might rent them on the next commercial I shoot and give them a go.
