  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcontrol - power fool DSMC camera control

I love foolcontrol to bits, I view it as the biggest leap in terms of operating the RED for years. The lens control for it is incredible, access to control the camera wireless. However sometimes, when the link goes off with the camera , I have real difficulty trying to get he link back up and I don't understand the reason for this break. Is there a troubleshooting process to fix this?

Also is there a list of canon mount lens which Foolcontrol has control over and which ones operate best.

Cheers keep up the good work and thanks for keeping this affordable!

Thanks Charles

I presume you are using the camera Ad Hoc wifi mode... I also find it difficult to reconnect to the network both on iOS and OS x if the camera is shut down / restarted after a battery change. Best cure to that is using the infrastructure mode if you can (connecting both camera and foolcontrol to a router) then whatever happens to the phone or camera they always reconnect quickly to the network.

Of course this is not always possible so usually you have to turn wifi off on your device, then turn it back on and reconnect to the camera wifi... Sometimes if you are using the iOS version it help turning on airplane mode and enabling wifi only. On OS X it can help to connect to another network and then select camera again if it doesn't reconnect in an easy way. Looks like Ad hoc networks or the way Apple implemented it is not really foolproof... i haven't tried troubleshooting this with latest iOS or OS X releases so please let me know what you are using (OS version and type of wifi module REDLink / HOTLink) so I can run some test and see if I can find a reliable way of reconnecting to Ad hoc network...

Regarding lenses supported by the RCP protocol, RED provides a list of supported lenses at the end of the DSMC manual.
Gunleik also started listing lenses that work best with the system in a thread on reduser :

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?135717

Please add your finding to this thread if you used lenses not listed or have good or bad results to share using some specific Canon or Nikon glass with foolcontrol

Just wanted to post this here. Been using the red link with fool control on the milo for the last two weeks. I had a CTRL port wifi before and run fool control on it, but then I could not sync the camera with the milo so I only used it for other occations but having the red link leaves both ctrl and sync sync open. And having fool control ready for instant playback in camera grading etc. is a god sent when having the camera on moco. Can not wait to run this setup with Weapon. So cool weapon will have the wifi built in.

Thanks Bjorn for the feedback and photo :-)

BTW the new teradek COLR (wireless LUT box with cross converter for HDMI/HDSDI) can also be used as a bridge to send foolcontrol signal via wifi to the GIG-E port on RED EPIC and SCARLET cameras... (keeping both SYNC and CTRL port free)

Mikael, saw this in another thread:

Yes same functionality for both foolcontrol iOS or OS X app if you are connecting with COLR.

The canera will need to have a GIG-E port which is available on EPIC / SCARLET brain but not on a DSMC2 base i/o... but those camera have built in wifi ;-)

Sold out of my Epic Dragon and have an order in for the new Scarlet-W - what will we need to run foolcontrol for the underwater housings? (wifi won't work) and neither the jetpack or base i/o have the gig-e connection - and the Redvolt expander is expensive and a bit fat, (might not fit as nice).

Is it possible to do control over the RS232 or is it too slow? If so could there be a more limited version over RS232?

Hello Michael

I have a special wired rs232 version for iOS that works well but that protocol is limited in range to only about 15 meters or so...

Without a smaller GIG-Ethernet module for DSMC2 right now the main option might be using an Ethernet to serial converter inside the housing (ethernet from computer convertED to CTRL port RS232 8N1 at 115200 bps). I haven't used one yet so cannot recommend any brand but I should order one to do some tests but there is no reason this would not work.

Please get in touch by email if you want to discuss any of those options and if you need any help to set this up...

Hopefully a slim DSMC2 module with GIG-E will be available in 2016 for UW, COLR and other solution requiring GIG-E without installing REDVolt expander.

Thanks, That should work for us, wasn't sure if speed was a limitation. Sent an email to your contact address.

Hi. On a set now, need help.
I can't seem to store a disk with markers.
Shooting on Scarlet W + Sigma 18-35.
If I press "create" I'll lose the markers
Thanks for helping

the create marker disc feature creates marked distance disks. It is different to the coloured mark system which is above it for temporary marks. Those are store until cleared or lens is changed...

Mikael

Sorry for bothering again:

I have put gaffer marks on the floor (4 marks).
I'd like to mark THOSE points on Foolcontrol disk. How to do this?
If I press "create disk" the app ask me to place a focus chart at an exact distance. Can I put the camera at a exact distance (steadycam start point - actors) using my first actual reference on the floor and press center disk to store THAT mark. Move then to my next reference (second gaffer on floor) and press again. And so on till I have all my desired marks?

Thanks again Mika!!

yes can do that and give custom name to each mark then at the send save that disc.
the idea was more about creating distance mark for each lens then use the color marker for temp / quick marks

Hey Mikael, what about a simple App for the crabby old soundman where he/she can sit at their cart and adjust and only adjust audio levels. Something simple and cheap these guy's need some love.

Hey Mikael, I was just using fool cat for a project with QT files. Is there an easy way to add basic metadata to QT files like Scene / Shot / Take / Circle etc. maybe even star rating, which show up in the catalog?

Can you mark your "good takes" with fool control and have premiere and fcpx to sort out the best takes based of this tagging. Perhaps evsn a star rating. Sorry if this is included in above question.

You can tag frames in camera while recording. In my latest tests neither FCPX or Premiere were reading those marks. Have to try again on latest FCPX. Foolcat and REDCINE-X should show those tagged frames. As for marking good takes post recording we will have to wait for RED to creste a way to add metadata to a sidecar file in camera (rmd or rtn).

----

Patrick, not sure. I used to enter them in good old QT7 and via some basic automation actions... will look if there is another way but at the moment not sure foolcat would display custom metadata but will look into available options to support this (both adding and reading).
