  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcontrol for iPhone...

Sorry if it has been answered before, what is the MICROSTEP motor and where is it sold? Does i t work with the Iphone? I can barely see it at the bottom of the frame in this video:

https://vimeo.com/94247015

but it doesn't show where it is connected. It would be great if it fitted on the Iphone somehow...

the microstep motor was a reference to the accurate focus / iris control using Lens motor microscope VS previous commands in the SDK that would only allow focus distance down to 1 cm and not drive the motor directly.

What you see in the video is a Griffin powermate knob.
It is connected via USB on the mac and can be programmed to send keyboard shortcuts to the app (left, right arrows for focus, up/down for iris for example).
A bluetooth version exists but it is useless for what we need as it only provides 24 steps per turns (USB version has 96 which is also bad but kinda usable compared to the BT version...)
...

Mikael, any way to use Fool Control to autoblackshade on Epic Dragon? Or at least automate part of the workflow?

For example, it would be great if we could be prompted with the matching blackshade option every time we change shutter angle.

So, if we're at 1/48 for 23.98, and then switch to 1/96 for 48fps, it'd be great to get a prompter that asks if we'd like to switch to our matching preset 1/96 blackshade.

Make sense?

I think this could be a significant boon to Dragon workflow!

Thanks!!
Best

Yes, we are running foolcontrol on our dragon with redlink on a DJI ronin. Works like a charm!

thanks Christoph for the feedback :)

foolcontrol via RCP can :
- know when calibration matches shutter or temp (displays T/C coloured calmap info)
- know shutter speed (and fan settings)
- kinda apply via a preset some previously created blackshade calmaps (I posted the presets before but email me to get them if needed)

but those are applied based on their number (1-4) but the app has no way to know which one correspond to which temp / shutter speed combination for now via RCP... SO best I could do is warm you when the clamp gets out of the green zone and tell you to apply preset but until RED implements more sensor calibration stuff in RCP it won't be easy to make a tool that works for everyone in a 'general purpose' app like foolcontrol.

As soon as some robust auto calmap management is possible via RCP I will make sure I look into it !

Sounds good!

One more question though - couldn't Foolcontrol look at the blackshade preset file NAMES (which I believe always include the shutter angle) and compare these to the shutter angle your selecting?

For example, lets say you have 4 blackshades setup like this:
1: 1/48
2: 1/96
3: 1/120
4: 1/192

If you switch to a 1/96 shutter angle, is there any way Foolcontrol could just scan your blackshade filenames and ask if you'd like to load the 1/96 preset?

This way its just a question of matching filename to shutter angle.

Obviously this means users could only save one blackshade for every shutter angle, but I get the impression most of us do that anyway.

Thanks for being so responsive.

Much appreciated!!

unfortunately there is no access via RCP to any black shade specific commands at all (reading their name included) so the only thing I can do is use nav keys (call this menu, move down, move up, enter etc...) to apply a given calmap but in a 'blind' way.

Christoph,

Thanks !

Are you using it to pull focus ? Does the Redlink fit on the ronin without extentions ?

Just did a shoot with 10 cameras as kind of "bullet rig". Michael was very swift in answering a few questions in email, super helpful. Down time on the shoot days on cameras was maybe 30 minutes in total, thanks to foolcontrol. This software is A MUST! Can't recommend it enough.

Also Michael I know your working on it, but a request is to be able to control multiple cameras as slaved to one also in configurations / if this is possible, multiple camera set ups like the one we had or any were cameras should have same settings. Will be crazy easy.

Hi Mikael,

Wondering if it's possible to allow focus marks to stay ordered in a way the user determines? Right now, all the marks seem to re-arrange themselves from closest to furthest. Often, I'd like to be able to set and hit mark A, B, C, D, etc. in a specific order regardless of the distance each mark is relative to one another. Is there an option I can enable to do that?

Thanks!

Hey Mikael,

I love the save preset feature, are you planning on adding black shade cal to the list of things to be saved? I just read through the questions/comments but didn't see a direct answer to this.

Hello Jamon

As soon as I can add the black shading calmaps I'll add them to foolcontrol. Right now they are not available thru RED CONTROL PROTOCOL. If you get in touch by email I can send you some special preset to apply pre-created clamps 1->4 from foolcontrol.

I can do that. Will add an option to not sort those markers based on distance like it works on OS X version...

Thanks Fredrik, yes working on some multi camera solution for the near future :-)
