Got my Epic-X earlier today. #2060, "Turing". Yay!

It's been out of the box for less than two hours and I've already hit a brickwall (d'oh!). Two problems:

1) There's no image on my RED PRO 7" LCD when connected to the EVF/LCD connector on the SSD module.

2) How do I pair REDMOTE with the camera without a side handle or a touchscreen, and especially without an image on the 7" LCD?

Any help and advice is much appreciated.

First, plug in the touch screen lcd, then get into the menu and select another device to control the camera (redmote or side handle) then your Red Pro 7" LCD should be fine.
Hope that help.

Best

You don't need to pair it if you just use it docked on the camera. However, without any working display I'm not sure what you will ba able to do. You will be able to use the REDmote to set the HDSDI or HDMI monitors to menu mode if that helps you at all.

Is that LCD compatible with the Epic?
RED Store says it's compatible with RED One, Scarlet and Epic. Yet no image appears on it when Epic is powered up.

The display is not broken, if that's what you mean. It worked perfectly on my RED ONE the day before I sent the camera in for Stage 3.5 trade-in. I'm trying to think of reasons why there's no image on the LCD. Could it be a faulty SSD module?

The RED 7" is in fact compatible with EPIC. Do you have another cable you can try? Also be sure the connectors are pushed in all the way allowing the pins to fully make contact. I know that seems simple but sometimes it can be tricky to tell if LEMO connectors are pushed into their fully connected position.

I would also check the cable and both ends of connectors to make sure there are no bent/damaged pins.
If the cable is not the answer you can try pulling the side SSD module off and then reseating it. But that is unlikely to be the case with a brand new camera as they are tested for functionality before leaving RED.

Hi Sean,

Several redusers (including me) have noticed severe banding problems when using the PRO 7" LCD on the EPIC.

Is RED aware of this problem, and trying to fix it?

Thanks for all the hard work Sean!

George

I don't have a touch screen. Like, at all.
Maybe try to start the camera without lcd plug in, so the redmote should automatically take the lead on the menu, then plug your LCD back.

I'll have to look into that further. I'm currently on-set (a little downtime right now).
What are you comparing the image to when you notice the banding? Another on-board monitor, HD-SDI feed, the R3Ds themselves?
Thanks!

I unseated the SSD module and re-seated it. I also removed the LCD cable, checked the pins and plugged it back in, this time making sure it's pushed all the way in. Powered the Epic up and... HEY PRESTO! Image appeared on the LCD!

Thanks Sean!

Oh man... I've been building PCs since the mid-80s so I should have known to try all the above first, and only then come crying here. Man, do I feel stupid...

Sorry guys and thank you all for your time and effort!

Hi Sean,

R3Ds are fine, it's just the image on the 7" PRO LCD.
I'm comparing it to both the 5" TOUCHSCREEN RED LCD and also a third-party HD-SDI monitor. Both look fine!
It's only the 7" PRO LCD which exhibits this (rather severe) banding.

As I said, several other EPIC users are experiencing the same problem. Please see the thread below, posts #5 and #7:

Again, thanks very much for looking into this problem!
All best Sean,
George

+1

I loved that monitor on R1, would like to still make love to it on the Epic, once I get the Redmote.
Touch 5 is not an accurate focusing tool for me. And I can't use my EVF sans Redmote. :(

Hi Sean,

More and more people are detailing the same experiences with the 7" PRO LCD on the EPIC:

In my humble opinion, it really requires further investigation and a future fix.

Thanks Sean, please keep us posted,
George

We are aware of the issue. The 7" LCD has a lower bit-depth than the other displays and requires extra processing to alleviate the banding. There will be a fix added in a future upgrade.
