  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look - Schneider Xenon FF-Prime Lenses

The Tokina is an amazing value for what it is, but the prototype 18mm T2.4 Xenon is a vastly superior lens (and that's the pre-production model even). Not to mention that the 11-16 is designed for APS-C sensors. Corner performance is a whole different thing.

Bear in mind the Tokina 11-16 covers full frame at 16mm, so corner performance at 16mm on APS-C should probably be "ok" at very least.

@Phil did I read right in an earlier post in this thread that these lenses will completely cover the Dragon sensor?

Correct these Xenon lenses are designed to cover Dragon 6K FF, FF35mm, 135 Still Film, and VistaVision sized image planes.

Thanks guys! Considering ordering the 35mm as my first true "Cine" lens....

Thanks again

Tommy

They are FULL FRAME + should completely cover Dragon sensor yes..and beyond. You could throw them on a 5D too.

Yes. I was referring to the larger Dragon formats. But you will find these primes are sharper than the Tokina in field and edge performance. That is unless something changes on that 18mm before it ships, which I doubt at this point.

100mm arrived today! But really Schneider...?? My OCD hurts.

No camera around currently to test it out on tonight, but if someone wants a 35, 50, 75, 100mm set for a shoot in New York, let me know! The 100mm sits disappointingly low in the case though... heh.

Congrats Kyle, who was your vendor if I may ask ?

Hot Rod Cameras, who have been excellent to work with. I'll happily go back to them in the future.

I may have been their first or second order for the 5 lens set originally.

Yea, I was told last week that 2 100mm we're coming to hot rod camera when I was checking the status on mine. So you must be the first or second from the order. Hope to see some images with it!

I received my 100mm on Monday, from Matthew Duclos and I have to say that the only distressing issue is that the lens cap is shorter than the caps on the first three Xenons. Matthew is getting me matching caps, but my custom case was made for six lenses at the length of the original caps and lenses...

Anyone know why they changed caps??

I have the Tokina 11-16 and at 6kFF I get slight vignetting at 12.5-13. It is the character of the image's between the Schneider and Tokina , etc., that I was referring to, in the opinion requested above.

Thank you very much

Yeah, Nick - that's exactly what I was talking about. I don't want to hastily jump to conclusions, but the obvious answer to 'why?'... seems to be that the new PL cap feels cheaper.

So they must be adding up the pennies saved per lens. And by doing so, annoying any of us who already have the original 3 lenses on hand.

If Matt is replacing all of them with the new and 'improved' style, you can have him send you 1/2" thick discs of foam to place in the bottom of each hole for your case to at least bring them all up to proper height so they don't float around. I've already sent an inquiry to Hot Rod Cameras to figure out where to find original PL caps.

Hi Kyle,

My case came with the foam disks, in "case' this happened-not Matthew Duclos' first rodeo, but I am thinking of going to the newer caps, as additional caps will be forthcoming and the 135, if it occurs might be longer. Then, with shorter caps, the foam spacer can be customized as needed...

Thank you very much

The actual reason for the short caps is to be able to fit a 5/6 lens kit into a smaller case. At least that's what reason I know of. Basically vertical versus horizontal stacking in s smaller case where 3 lenses fit horizontally, but 6 fit vertically.

I'll retract my annoyance over penny pinching and instead extend it to making design changes after sending out 3/5 lenses... :wink5:

Ultimately not a big deal, I'll either find original PL caps for my set, or switch over to the new style and ask nicely for some cut foam.

The first two sets of Xenon's had the longer caps, but my Sponsored set, shipped on the newly re-designed small black cases with cut foam insert and shorter caps, so now all are the same.

I like the shorter caps better, much better, and they fit also nicely on my Lowepro back pack better... :)

The 100mm is my favorite... But I must admit, I am looking forward to the 135mm... Hard to forget how much love I got form my 135mm lenses during my Still days... :)

Seems like a firm October release for the 25mm. No good dates yet on the 18mm...

Hello everyone !

To those who we loved (and still love) the Red Pro Primes lenses... and now those who have the Schneider Xenon:
For film-feature (with Red Epic X): what is the choice?
(lease, do not talk about the differences in weight or beyond the limits to 5.5k ...)
I imagine that these two generations are not comparable (chroma aberration, colors homogeneity, etc ...).
The Xenon might be more comparable with Zeiss CP2? ... (Which for me, lacks cinematic character, clean, standard, good for video, clip, commercial ... but not for a short or long-feature)
Prices fall (when a Dragon pass over us ...) and I see no equivalent to RPP ... but maybe I'm wrong, that I underestimate the Xenon! ... (Despite the very explicit tests made by Phil)

Thank you for your help!

Christophe
