  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FilmConvert for Davinci Resolve

I love all the enthusiasm for FilmConvert but one thing that has really bugged and made me question their integrity is that on the film convert website, they claim that the first image was shot with Fuji Pro film and the second image a Canon 5D. However if you look closely at the people in the background in both images they are in exactly the same place therefore forcing me into assuming that both images are simply rendered versions of the same shot. I've seen this tactic used many times in the past (Best Buy does it all the time) I always ignore their product but the makers of FilmConvert seem above this. Still, I cannot help not ignoring this dilemma.

If you look at the two images stereoscopically you can see that they are definitely two different images taken side by side at the exact same moment, but are not the same image. I have been playing with film convert for the last hour. Trust me: it's legit. Download the trial and give it a shot. No harm done if you don't like it.

Hi!

I've asked the question before.

FilmConvert's output is for the sRGB color space.
Can we get REC709?

That's the professional broadcast color space and it is thoroughly needed. sRGB is of no real use for motion video.

Thanks!

The Rig :)

We shot Red+Arri+Canon 5D together.
We tried to get the framing the same for each for comparison.
I think we cropped some of the final images to align them better :)

The two color spaces are identical except for limited vs full, which either colorspace can have. Limited vs full you do within DaVinci or Premiere or whatever you are using.

A user select-able output space would be very welcome. DCI-P3, REC-709, and LOG would all be welcome additions.

Would also love camera profiles for the Dragon, SONY F5 and F55.

I looked at the shots and thought, "well, the only way they could do this would be if the cameras were essentially bolted together to the same tripod head..." and it looks like that's what you did. It's a fair test.

I think the issue of dealing with multiple color profiles is a big challenge, though, particularly when those cameras are shooting different flavors of raw.

I tried the trial, but the "RedCameraPackage" can't install... can't get past the license agreement. I would really like to try first before purchase.

Windows or Mac? Is the installer asking you to select a drive or something?

Windows, when I try to install the package I get to the license agreement and when I push the button to continue nothing happens. Tried open the package with admin permission, scrolling through the agreement etc. nothing happens.

At that point Windows should ask you if you want the installer to make a change to the system... perhaps that dialog is stuck down in your task bar or behind another window?
The installers are standard InstallShield installers, so should work okay... perhaps you could try another camera pack to see if you still have trouble. Have you rebooted your machine recently?

Got it to work on my mac, need to test again on my windows machine.
Is there going to be an update to the Red Package to include Dragon?

Also, at which point in the node structure should you put this? Put the grade before the effect or after?

We will have Dragon profiles soon. You are supposed to apply the effect first, then grade.

This is something I'd like you guys to think about changing for the DaVinci implementation. I like grading Log files with a display LUT at the end of the chain. Unfortunately your plugin assumes REC709/SRGB as an output. Why not have the option to not have a Print Film Emulation LUT in the plug-in, so the user can put it in the chain where they wish?

Another thing I've noticed is that in some cases, the plug in can do some weird nasty things to the color red if there happens to be any noise.

I feel that it destroys the image quite alot, sometimes there's a lot of shadow information gone and when pushing for it to come back the highlights goes out the window. I feel there's a loss of DR when applying this to make it more like a finished print, but shouldn't the ungraded scanned film when grading real 35mm be a little more flat (in order to push in grading)

I'm also for a Print Film Emulation that's able to be applied in the end to complement the existing ones. That should have the ability to be REC709, D3 or any other standard including Dolbys new broadcast standard.

How does the r3D ISO correlate with exposure in the FilmConvert? Should I change the RAW settings to balance the footage, or should I just set the R3D material to let's say Redcolor3 and redlogfilm and use the same in FilmConvert without changing anything else? Most shots seem to get underexposed when I apply the correct red to film simulation through FilmConvert. Also, how does FilmConvert handle 5K material in a 1080p timeline when the final render is UHD?

I just wanted to pop in and mention that I had the same exact problem. I couldn't get past the license agreement. I managed to fix it by doing the following:

Right click the installer --> Properties --> Security Tab --> Give yourself full permissions everywhere

This allowed me to get past the License agreement and install the a7s pack. You might as well run as administrator as well just in case, but this alone didn't change anything for me.
