  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Q&A

I know this is Brook's Q&A thread so I'll apologize in advance.

I couldn't agree with Gibby more. An ergonomically designed smart handgrip that can ride out front for hand held or on the tripod handle would be a terrific addition to our favorite next generation camera system. The RED side handle is wonderful but not exactly the right beast for all needs.

FWIW the idea of a handle that rides out front on the right like a B4 zoom grip with a zoom rocker, rec/stop and such seems like a winner to me.

Now, back to Brook and all the EPIC NEWS!

Thanks Blair...we're definitely on agreement about that. In the Red productions you and me have shot together such a smart handgrip/servozoom unit would have been a major plus - and now with Epic and Scarlet here, the utility of such a unit is even greater still.

Also, if you re-red Brook's thread opening post, his concept of this Q&A thread was for all Epic M owners to be able to answer Epic questions on this thread. Here's what he posted: "With a handful of active forum members having taken delivery of their cameras, it'll be good to get them all in one spot."

So he intended this to be a central thread for all Epic M owners to answer questions Red User members may have about using Epic in the real world. I think that's a great idea, thus I've been answering questions here and posting my ideas. Each Epic owner comes from different backgrounds, shooting style, and genre experience - thus each can answer questions that relate to their style and the genres they service.

BTW - me, Ketch, Pam, and Joseph all visited Brook this afternoon on the set of Spiderman. Cool setup Brook...way cool! Peter Collister ASC, the 2nd Unit DP invited us to Spiderman weeks ago and we finally made it there. Thanks Peter...it was great meeting you and comparing notes on Epic :). Also, thanks to Nate from Red for guiding us around the lot.

Before going to Spiderman, we were at ET learning about the features of our new ET Atom 3D rigs, then we stopped by Red Studios and visited with Ted and others. Jim and Jarred were at Spiderman while we were at Red - when we got to Spiderman we had just missed them.

Fun day!

Steve, thanks for carrying that flag, I don't post a lot, but I read Red User everyday, and always stop to read your posts!

Sorry this is off topic for the thread, but here is my plea for more of an EFP/ENG setup:

I know Red is focused mostly on the cinema professional, but I find it hard to believe that Red is not looking at the thousands of EFP/ENG type cameras out there shooting non-cinema related footage. Red is about to be in competition with any camera on the market that cost over $6000. Most of these cameras have an EFP/ENG type rocker zoom control for a reason. I hope Red will see the marketing opportunity for the rest of us non-cinema types, and provide zoom lenses with servo zoom controls. Not just on the fixed lens Scarlet, but Epic as well.

My company focuses on developing and producing Reality TV shows, we are shooting a pilot for a major cable network right now and using Panasonic HPX3700 P2 Cameras and Cannon 5D's
I own a Red One, and love it! But it is to big to lug around for most Reality TV, and not exactly an ENG camera. The Epic however could be perfect for our needs with the right lens control. I sure hope someone is listening, and has the EFP/ENG camera market as part of there vision.

Thanks for voicing that Terry....

Its not really off-topic at all. This thread is for Epic M owners to answer questions about real world use of Epic and to give their impressions of the camera. I am unbelievably happy with Epic. That said, my posts about the smart handle for use with electronic mounts and electronic lenses for hybrid and EFP production are accurate feedback and input from an Epic owner (me ) about a tremendously useful accessory for use in the styles and genres I work in - and which tons of other potential Red customers do too. IMO that's the type of input Red both wants and needs.

Thanks again for voicing your opinion and support...

So what modules are you using Brook? I assume you have an I/O module to be able to run onboard monitors for the AC and other monitors on set?

I hope David is right about this (I/O module lust alert) but I am guessing that Brook uses the touchscreen LCD (or EVF) off the 14pin LEMO and then everything else is off the SDI spigot. Depending on the demand, loop throughs or DAs (distribution amps) can drive multiple SDI monitors as needed.

Sorry to butt in, just making sure everyone understands that while not every feature is active just yet on the Epics AFAIK the only monitoring limitation when working directly off the brain is that only one menu/control savvy RED monitoring option can be used at a time.

Cheers - #19

While I understand everyone is very busy, I would love to see a couple of stills of the same image shot at various compression rates. Thanks for all the information you guys have posted, it is very helpful.

Blair/Brook:

Do you know what comes out the HDMI at the same time? Is it a clean out or monitor out with the menus?

The SSD uses cards(?) like the SxS cards in the Alexa? When I did an Alexa shoot, I found I needed about six cards per camera to feel comfortable about getting the downloaded cards back to camera, for narrative dialogue shooting, and I recall that at ProRes4444, we were getting about 13 minutes on each card.

So if I'm shooting 5K at 8:1 compression, let's say, at 24 fps... how many minutes on each SSD card? How long does it take to download a card?

Epic-M ships with the SSD module. SSDs look like cards, or as Jannard put it "chocolate bars". It is the same SSD media now available on Red Ones with the SSD module upgrade, which multiple people described as worth the several thousand dollar cost for the download times alone. I can't remember the actual download times, but magnitudes over CF. The capacities currently available are 64GB, 128GB and 265GB. Epic-M's have been shipping with four 128GB SSDs.

There is a chart somewhere with recording times. I'll try to find it for you. Edit:I looked but I can't remember where it was, sorry.

Here's the chart Jim posted with estimated times. Reports from production (Brook Willard) suggest these are pretty darn close.

Also I would like to know when would we be able to use the 16GB cards on the Epic?. If the SSD module is installed, would it be possible to shoot with the cards wihtout aditional modules? Even though I think SSD is great I can still see a use to my Red cards. I have a Nexto hardrive that I can back up on location when I don't have access to laptop. I wonder if there will be a solution like that for SSD in the future.

Jarred had mentioned that RED is making a CF card adapter that can go right in the SSD slot on the SSD side module:

Don't worry though, there is an SSD adapter that turns CF cards into an SSD mag so you can still use all your CF cards in either the side SSD or read SSD modules.

It depends on the build - it's run the gamut so far. You will be able to choose your own adventure eventually.

At 8:1, you'll get 35-40 minutes per card. Steve Freebairn [lead data technician on Spidey, a gentleman and a scholar] is running timed ingest tests right now for a Finder copy [unacceptably risky] and a proper checksummed copy.

Odd Q but, What is the RED Mote made from? Metal or Plastic? I'm assuming metal?

Odd Q but, What is the RED Mote made from? Metal or Plastic? I'm assuming metal?

The M REDmotes are made from machined billet aluminum. I assume that the X REDmotes will be made from cast aluminum. The surfaces of the REDmote are either powder coated, coated in a rubber friction surface or plastic.

Got my hands on an epic before my shoot tomorrow and have a few questions:
1)Does the relative shutter work? It doesn't turn yellow like on the r1, so not sure if it is active yet.
2) I know there is an option to actually dial in your shutter but couldn't find it. I was only able to find the presets. What do I clicko n to get the dial in menu.
3) Do you need to restart to get the title and action safe lines to show up? I turned them on, but they didn't show. Restarted and changed to a r1 7" and they showed up.

Anything else useful to know?

thanks guys!

When you move the cursor over the shutter item on the home menu, press up on the rotary pad on the redmote and or sidehandle. Further options available there for many home menu items. (wb, shutter etc)
