  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Q&A

I think this is a great feature...

There were a least a couple of times where I was squeezed in some place and blindly reached for the record button on the back of the R1. Even though it's on the other side, I felt something round, pushed the power button and had to wait for a reboot. Stalled everything.

That was always tricky with the R1. The best solution is to pop the black power button out [it's just a cover] to reveal the smaller, white button below. That way it doesn't protrude from the camera body, so you'd really have to mean it to press it.

Just to confirm:

You can have redlogFilm on the monitors?

(Gunleiks celebrational days are approaching rapidly...)

Gunleik, you will be happy to hear that the Epic Ted had with him here in Istanbul had RedLogFilm as an in camera monitoring option :)

Yes, you can change to RLF output. I'm hoping/expecting that we'll be able to trigger it with a button for temporary viewing in the near future. I'd certainly never want to *leave* the camera in that mode, but it sure is nice to show DPs who are accustomed to working with log video cameras.

Thanks Brook.

I wouldn't leave it like that, but gee is it a useful tool, compared to redgamma/redcolor.
It will be a bit more straightforeward to explain exposure at 800 that way, when you can actually show someone what is in the top without losing the bottom... :-))

redgamma2 is default on Epic, as I understand it. That's great news, too.

One thing I am wondering, though, is whether it is calibrated the same way as in RCX or if it is calibrated for Epic at 800?

Thanks a lot Brook!

I envy you all the fun in a very appreachiating and non-jealus way!

I think it's better to keep from getting that specific just yet. Things are still changing and optimizing right now. The simple answer is that it's by no means an unfamiliar image on the video tap... you guys will be blown away by how nice the image is.

It seems like it might be better to ask the question rather than assume a mistake? Just a thought.

Jim

Never assumed it was a mistake? Not sure where that came from...

Was simply looking for information on what the deal was with the record/power switch.

Thanks for the answers.

We have come to love all the "Record" Options on EPIC, and the option coming form the Power Button has come very handy in more
then one occasion, point is that if you don't have the Side Grip, then you can start stop from either the front left of the camera as well
as form the Right side, do this is very helpful when having the camera build up with so much gear, all about easy access and multiple
options , LOVE IT, CUDOS to RED on this decision ;)

The power/record combo button on the side of Epic hasn't caused me any problem or discomfort whatsoever in field use of the camera. Its nice to have four different options for recording - camera right side, SSD front, Redmote, and side handle.

In my mobile hybrid style of shooting with Epic I find myself naturally powering up the camera with the camera side button, but then using either the SSD front record button or the Side Handle record button when I want to record. The Side Handle will be on my camera setups most of the time to enable quick transition from tripod to hand held.

Looking forward, what I'd also like to see for use with the Canon, Nikon, and Red electronic mounts and 35mm electronic lenses, is a servo-zoom handle similar to that of a B4 2/3" system, which could be modularly mounted on the Shoulder Mount handle or alternately on the right-hand tripod handle, which would have a button for Record/Stop, and a rocker switch for electronic zooming. That could be wired to a bus, or possibly BlueTooth. I'm also assuming the Side Handle, which has has a small zoom rocker switch and a Record button can have that same utility for hand held motion capture when using the electronic mounts and 35mm electronic lenses.

A servo-zoom Rec/Stop unit like I described above would probably not get much use in cine style shooting (because an electronic mount and electronic lens is needed to function) - but it would get extensive use in hybrid style and both hardlined and non-hardlined EFP style shooting with Epic and Scarlet - both shoulder held and tripod work - where electronic mounts and electronic lenses are desirable. Just sayin'...

If Red doesn't make such an accessory, somebody else needs to make it quickly. There will be a giant market for it for both Epic and Scarlet.

Maybe I read the "say it ain't so" wrong?

Wasn't suggesting it is a "mistake". Just seemed like there might be room for error. "If it can go wrong it will go wrong" theory.

But more to the spirit of the thread - I am glad to see everyone's feedback. Makes me less concerned about it.

Yeah no need to concern yourself Dylan,

you have to very intentionally HOLD for several Seconds the Power Button in order to POwer Down ;)

Very funny :)

The front record button is there - so I use it sometimes.

Back then in 2009 my input was that if the camera was designed without a front record button, it was workable - not that it would be my favorite way to operate without a front button. For sure, having four record button options on Epic now is very nice in real-world operation.

Most electronic motion cameras, especially B4 2/3" cameras, traditionally have a record button somewhere on the front of the camera. Three record buttons would have been very workable on Epic - but four gives more options.

The above said, when shooting in DSMC mode with the camera someone will almost never, if ever, use the left front record button - they'll use the Side Handle or Bottom Handle record buttons - a point I made clear back then. Red saw fit to put that additional record button on the left front, and that's just one more record option. But with a servo-zoom like unit available, like I described in my last post, for the tripod handle or shoulder rig handle, that would then seriously enhance the utility of the camera. If an electronic mount/electronic lens shooter had one of those servo-zoom/rec units, they'd use it constantly when they shot motion footage, then use the Side Handle and Bottom Handle record buttons when they shoot stills - and very rarely use the front record button.

Bottom line is that Epic is designed extremely well and has many record options. What I'm suggesting is a simple add-on accessory for another important option to make field workflow easier for those who use the electronic mounts and electronic lenses.

I feel that it'd be premature to make any definitive statements about the range of the REDmote. How much range are you hoping for?

Hah. I forgot, I'd already found the answer from the Q&A...

"-Stuart (post #843) Regarding REDlink and what it is: "REDmote uses it's own wireless protocol i.e. "REDLink" This wireless link has significantly greater range than 802.11 WiFi"

So I'm figuring the 20ft someone mentioned is way too low... that's got to be a hundred feet at least.

Mike

Sorry. What I'm asking is where can you draw power from to power auxiliary accessories?

This is a wacky question but if the side handle is on with a battery in it does the rear lemo become an auxiliary power output?

The camera has no power outputs. The rear LEMO does not become an output when the camera is powered from another source.

I have a few questions for EPIC-M owners if you guys could answer. I realize some of these have already been answered. If so, please past the link page for the relevant post.

1. Power. Are there options, how are you mounting? Does a standard RED Brick power the EPIC in same shooting scenario longer than the RED? How much longer?

2. Heat. It's March but has anyone had a chance to use EPIC in harsh conditions (100 degrees plus, perhaps a dry sauna or warehouse). Do you guys think ice packs will be required or is new cooling system sufficient?

3. Monitoring. What are the current alternatives? What options exist for dual-monitoring? Any issues with HDMI out not working with some displays?

4. RED Lens Coverage. At 5K, which RED lenses or focal lengths don't cover?

5. REDMOTE. Could this be too easily misplaced? Any way to page it from the camera like a cordless phone if lost?

6. POST. What options exist for 5K and HDRx™ footage?

Thanks in advance.

You can use the Red Bricks and or any other Battery same as we did with the Red One, and RED ships an Adapter Cable form
Battery Mount to Camera, we have not measured the duration of the Bricks but they do last easily double then on the R1 ;)

UYou can also use the EPIC AC Power Adaptor, and or with same adapter cable that powers form Battery Plate to Camera, you
can use the Battery Charger to camera.

2. Heat. It's March but has anyone had a chance to use EPIC in harsh conditions (100 degrees plus, perhaps a dry sauna or warehouse). Do you guys think ice packs will be required or is new cooling system sufficient?

The Fan system in Epic has both Auto and Manual were you can control the Fan in record Mode and or Stand By from al percentages up to 100%, I foresee no heating issues.

3. Monitoring. What are the current alternatives? What options exist for dual-monitoring? Any issues with HDMI out not working with some displays?

All monitors used on Red ONe can be used on Epic, no difference, for double monitoring, either EVF Plus LCD or Touch Screen plus
LCD, we use the Small HD P6, great little thing, using the HD SDI output, (thanks Jarred for the advise)

4. RED Lens Coverage. At 5K, which RED lenses or focal lengths don't cover?

We have tested all the RED PRO series Glass, Primes and Zooms, all of them are good for 5k, same for the Master Primes ;)
