  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Q&A

Yes it does function both when Docked on camera or Off camera, love the Redmote ;)

Not what I asked.

I'm asking if there is an actual wired capability so we can use it in a separate case for underwater since the wireless RF signals don't travel underwater. (even extremely powerful radios - like NASA spacesuit radios - can only penetrate a few meters - I doubt if redmote RF would go even a few inches through water). Hardwire might also be more reliable for jib/crane work, particularly if focus and iris are being used.

what compression ratios are currently available? and what would be the redcode equivalent? rec 50? rec 100? rec 250?

any tests or current impressions on what it's native dynamic range is without HDRx? more than r1 mx i presume? i know it's claimed to be X amount of stops, but would be nice to get a little more of owner views on it, everybody has their own opinion on the cameras DR and what they deem usable.

same applies to sensitivity.

thanks Brook, you seriously are the man.

Have you used the Canon EOS mount? And if so, what were your impressions with the auto focus?

I've only used the PL mount.

20 ft? would be cool when the cam is on a crane...

would be a super bonus though

Easy.

RC 3:1 through RC... 12:1? 15:1? I can't remember. I haven't gone over 10:1. I like 5:1.

Personally [opinion time!], I find it to match the MX R1 at 13-1/2 to 13-2/3 stops. The noise levels are lower [as fantastic as the MX already was] and the images definitely feel much "easier" to grade. Hard to articulate... you'll see. If there's more DR, it's negligible, but I do feel like there's more latitude... I'm less afraid to dig stuff out from deeper in the shadows. It's better, it's just difficult to put it on paper.

I've selected the same sensitivity as before but I'm not afraid to underexpose and bring it up. I'd still call 800ASA the sweet spot and I would not recommend going below 640 or 500 for the sake of your highlights [unless you know what you're doing]. Don't sacrifice highlights for your shadows... the shadows will be there.

And then you click on HDR and it gets a whole lot better.

Kyle, i played with the canon mount for literally ten seconds, but it was as fast as you'd expect it to be, and its not searching for it either.

3D setup

3D setup

I have a chance to put two Epics together on Friday in a 3D rig. Is all the 3D components enabled? Do I require an external sync box or is there a proprietary sync cable required like Alexa? Unfortunately Epics are like Dragon teeth so I will not have both cameras untill shoot day.

You will need a sync cable [from RED] for each camera and a timecode and sync generator. You should consider having your DIT email the bomb squad to talk about 3D.

We're months into Spider-Man [3D] and it's been working great. The sync between the cameras is the best I've ever seen.

Will wireless sync ever be possible? I would like to shoot some hyperstereo and will need them several feet apart.

Do you find yourself programming any of the custom buttons on the REDMOTE or side handle? The custom user buttons came in handy with the R1 to quickly get you to a specific menu, but it sounds like the touch screen is more handy.

Just curious - how long does black shading take?

Hi Brook,

Thanks for this! What media is supported for firmware updates? Do I need to have a RedStation ssd with me all the time? or are there other options?

Thanks again,

Steve

SSD, no you do not need the Red Station with you at al times, but YES you do need the SSD REDMAG 1.8" attached to your Hip every were you go,
as you did before with the CF reader ;)

Is RED-DRIVE working with Epic?

Please tell me who in the right mind would use the RED DRIVES on Epic, ha ha.

sorry if this is a stupid question... but does the the R1 Nikon mount work on the Epic?

No, is my obvious answer, however only RED can really answer this one ;)

But even if you could, why would you want to use a DUM mount, when you can have the Specifically Build for Epic fully Electronic Mount to control even AF?

The Canon mount is still being tested out at Red. I'd guess that sometime soon when all firmware has been coded, when most of the top-end Canon lenses have been tested on it, and the mount fully "talks" as it should with Epic, then the first Canon mounts will then be tested by customers.

Reports are that the Canon mount is working real well at Red. On Mike Seymour's M Owners thread FX Guide's Jeff Heusser posted briefly about seeing the Canon mount in action at Red.

anybody try to use a RED RAM with epic yet? is it still limited to traditional r1 recording, or can you record at a lower compression... I know everybody has the SSDs already, just trying to figure what can be salvaged from r1 accessories.

also has anybody put an epic through high temperatures and really hot/sunny days yet?

I've been very curious about the menu system/touchscreen. What are your initial impressions?

I found the user interface and menu layout to be very intuitive - especially for someone who has used Red One menus. There is naturally more menu categories and selections within them than Red One - but there's really no rocket science involved in quickly learning the menu layout, button functions, and then just getting out to shoot with the camera. I just jumped right in and started searching menus and pushing buttons - and I guarantee you nothing ever melted down :-)

The way cool thing I love is how quick the LCD touch screen is for navigating to/from menus and changing the settings on the camera. Also, if you have the Side Handle, LCD, and Redmote on the camera you can navigate on any of those three accessories to the menus to change settings on the camera. If the LCD isn't on the camera, but the Side Handle is, you still have two ways to quickly get to and adjust the camera - the Redmote and the Side Handle.

A manual will be handy for checking out all the functions of those advanced features of the camera you may rarely use - because when you do need them you have to know quickly what they do, how to get to them, and the best way to use them. But for everyday routine use of Epic anyone who has used a Red one will be up to speed very quickly - and it won't take anyone who is at least relatively experienced with other non-Red cameras to get going well in a short period of time.

Don't let the thought of using Epic intimidate you - its relatively simple to use, the user interface is very intuitive, it can be setup and morphed into just about what ever you want it to be, it won't bite you, and is really a joy to use :-)
