  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

Do not know, but you for sure would not want to stop at that level. The need for DR is infinite in a camera.

Good point.

Wikipedia and a few other places say 20+ stops. So it may end up that Dragon has the same dynamic range as the human eye :)

Edit: Thanks Jeff.

The eye cheats a little bit though.. kinda like HDRx :)

Perhaps we'll start hearing arguments that 20 stops of dynamic range is "too much"...heh

That's an interesting topic. I'm out doing NYE things at the moment and broadcasting via phone (which should tell you how excited about this I am), but 20 stops is a bit of a magic number in terms of image capture for a single scene. This new found latitude will provide so much more control over the "curve" of your final image. In some ways, if processed and shot correctly, providing something we really haven't experience before.

I actually hope that HDRx doesn't go away. There are very good uses for it actually with this new range. Especially if we are talking large budget VFX shoots and the ability to publish to a 32bit container. Even if its gone, it can still be used in this way. Just a bit more work.

Get your wallets full... the increase in ASIC spending means the upgrade will cost a bit more. But well worth it.

Jim/Jarred,
Two questions:
1.
What is the deadline for Scarlet purchase epic upgrade?
2.
How does this effect Epic Monochrome?

Jim,

Someone gave me a bottle of red wine. I'm opneing it and toasting, you, your team and the helpful people here.

6k +20 steps + HDRx + 185 deg fisheye would be kick ass for motion environment/ refection maps for sure. So if there is any way possible to squeeze HDRx in there even only for low fps like 25p that would be mad.

If RED could keep the capability and just call it something like "simultaneous dual shutter speed" or something I would be super happy!! We rely on the 2nd track with higher shutter speed for a TON of stuff...and it will be even more miraculous with the new sensitivity of Dragon.

Dragon chip is looking like a game changer. A DR getting up to 20 stops is way beyond your average day to day scenario. With this latitude you can probably rate the camera down and not worry too much about highlights burning out. Cant wait to see this but I assume this extra innovation will not only push price up but push back delivery? The competition has now been given the heads up so 2013 will be an interesting year.

Bingo. And for other image based lighting techniques and image analysis. There is a lot of potential.

Haha - am I the only one imagining all the people rubbing their hands together in anticipation of buying a BT Scarlet, at an insane closeout price, a year down the road? LOL

(What else will they do with all those trade-in Scarlets?) :sneaky2:

Happy new year to all at Red company.
Please just know that we do appreciate your tireless efforts.
thank you all
