Hi everyone

Many People are complaining about apples FCP, including myself. :scared:

so, while everybody is waiting, and hopes for native R3d support in Final Cut Pro, somewhere in 2011.

Why dont we use Media Composer from Avid ?

Were are the differences ? FCP vs. MC ???

Whats your experience with Media composer so far ?

AMA works for short projects (MC is a 32bit app),
but avid is inmho better for longform projects.

Avid-Protools integration
Avid datamanagement

Avid rocks i have 6 of them. I have preached about AVID a lot on various forums.
Why don't you go to AVID.com and download a free 30day trial.

I'm sure you will see the advantage of AVID of FINAL CUT then.

BTW IM NOT AN AVID RESELLER!! I have used AVID since Version 1.5 ( A LONG LONG TIME AGO!)

Long time user too. REAL LONG!
There customer support is non-existent and the customer is always wrong! Besides that, if you are a do it yourselfer, you are good to go!

dunno, michael did help out when i wasnt an Avid customer, today its even better.

but for wildstyle editing, fcp rules.

but for longform i had the feeling that all the plug ins you need to make FCP work adds up to what AVID MC costs and you have no headaches in certain areas.

automatic duck export is 500 usd and sync n link is 500 usd...there you have the 2000 usd.

But i have to commit, i never use soundtrack pro, motion, compressor or color.

what i want to say, if you intend to have an offline/online workflow for long projects avid is the way to go.

for everything else (which is a lot) fcp rules.

just my 2 cents

in Avid:
i did use AMA for a music video...when the timeline was 2 minutes long the system crashed every 60 or 70 minutes (running out of memory)...MC couldnt use more than 4 GB Ram,
there were no thumbnails, unneccary bins were closed etc, still crashing.
But i finished it with AMA.

8core x2,66 MacPro with GTX 285 and 8 GB Ram.

I did get a rocket 2 months ago and honestly i think i was an idiot not having one before.
just transcode in realtime and do your stuff.
instead paying for better processors i just bought a used macpro from ebay and a BT red rocket card

FCP can't use more than 4GB of ram either. For all it's worth, FCP has become somewhat long in the tooth - a lacklustre upgrade, a deprecated DVD Studio. Apple doesn't care about the pro apps anymore - they've discontinued Shake, dropped the Xserve. Avid on the other hand, it's their core business.

in fcp i always edited with Prores, and the last update was ok (improved stability for me)

In Avid i now use MXF files.

If FCP doesnt improve they will lose me, thats for sure.
i get more comfortable with Avid every day.

i dont use one single app in the FC Suite besides FCP, compressor sucks when donconverting, Color is buggy as hell and my audio guys use ProTools

Avid had a huge comeback with MC5, with Resolve and smoke you can have a damn good suite on a mac

Symphony Nitris is a step below DS and a few more toolsets than MC. But so far only 1920x1080...

With Avid having acquired Euphonix it's only going to get better.

And check out the free webinar on Avid's site from last weekend...shows the Red workflow.

Wow, I can't disagree more. Michael Phillips is around here all the time in the Avid section of the Workflow forum. Avid's own user forum is awesome, and you can always buy a support contract if you want to.

Media composer 5 - new, and 30 hours of RED footage - movie project, you will edit only one day, the system is not stable and too slowly.
On longer project where is more material, you must downconvert it to DNxHD and edit like offline, than use the EDL and some other program - like DAVINCI and make full quality. The only way.

So Peter, did you workt alot with Media Composer?

i thought while your editing, your setting the setup on low resolution?

and when your finshed, you set it back to 4k, to output the movie?

wich machine did you use for editing?
