  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC-2, The Weapon, The Scarlet-W and the Raven and the improvements that they bring.

Wow! Awesome! :cheers2: Now I only wished i had coding skills, I would totally make a plugin for AE and Resolve! I've done a lot of tracking stabilizations and made my own solution in AE that's almost exactly like Syntheyes (which they used on Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), but I'm totally lost when looking at the tracking data so I hope someone makes something of this. Is there any difference between the data recorded in Weapon and data from devices like the Iphone in pure coding language? Because if the SteadXP uses the same code for tracking data, you might be able to use their software with the tracking metadata from the R3D files. I'm gonna check with them.

Other than that, it would be awesome if some stabilization tools were put into Redcine-X :thumbup1:

That would be a great place for it. Stabilize the footage then export to nle of choice.

We've included the accelerometer data for about 6 months now and its been increased in accuracy over the last few builds. David finchers guys use mocha I believe to use it for stabilization, all that info is sitting on the metadata ready for some smart coder to come along and use however they want :)

Have been extracting and playing with some of this data since it has been available via REDLine...
Not ready yet but hopefully soon :-)

It's almost like a religious experience where I see a problem and wish for some magic solution.... and then Magic Mike comes in with the gold!

We put the data in there for whoever wants to use it can... thats up to the software companies to implement.
Jarred, is there anything you guys don't think of? Alright well then Weapon has no room for improvement, ha. Awesome!

Holy shit that is awesome!!!!!! Can't wait!!!!!!

Jarred mentioned the Weapon getting the upgraded gyro speed in a previous firmware. Does that apply to EPIC DRAGON as well?

i wonder if we will see all the "bits" jarred mentioned that will be announced that would make our decision harder on whether to choose a pkg or ala carte, before xmas, i thought it was going to be mid November???

jordan, bits went live with SCARLET-W announcement. Universal Handle, Outrigger, Base I/O V-Lock Expander...

Wow. Does this mean what I think it means? No more pulling my hair out after failed camera solves in After Effects? Bang on camera-tracked motion graphics? So cool. And just when BlackMagicDesign apparently took the gyro function OUT of the new Ursa mini 4.6! ScarletW where have you been all my life? Edit: okay so it seems it was the GPS that BMD removed, gyro could still be there. Nevertheless... ScarletW, you will be mine.

Great point Phil, thanks for pointing this out.

Instead of being down a setup for weeks due to an "oops moment" for weeks, the whole point of failure can be swapped out in a few minutes (or delivered in a couple days)

minutes (or days) vs weeks possible downtime - another impressive improvement.

Seriously that's a huge point. This Eco system is getting more insane by the minute.

YES! GREAT POINT!!

How much does that code weigh?

How much does that code weigh?

What can we do to encourage the usual suspects to put engineering resources into taking advantage of the sophisticated positional data in R3D metadata?

1) Vote with our wallets is a good start - the first company to integrate this capability needs to see sales increases.

2) At NAB this year RedUsers need to ask specific questions about how particular post tools will utilize positional metadata for stabilization, match moves, VFX tracking, etc.

Jarred and the RedTeam have managed to get this tech to a place where it can be of great value, as Jarred notes above - the baton is ready for the software companies to grab and take it across the finish line. I think Tommaso is correct in suggesting that robust implementation of this tech could make DSMC2 cameras the "go to" choice for a wide array of projects.

BTW - I also imagine that stabilizing in post won't be nearly as hard on my arms, wrists, shoulders and back as being a "meat dolly" for a gimbal ;-)

Cheers - #19

Can someone clarify which DSMC2 models will include this metadata? Is it the whole lineup or only specific units?

I have to imagine ALL. It seems to be software driven, not hardware, so guessing we'd see it on all DSMC2 cameras?

My understanding is that it is in the metadata so, at a minimum, you should find it in REDcine-X. Ideally, the other NLEs will bring it in when they update with the newest SDK from RED.

A lot of people were surprised that no DC, HDMI, or HD-SDI was included on the camera from the get go, but if you think about common points of failure during 1-5+ years of daily camera use (damaged ports and cable snags) I think it makes a lot more sense because you'd likely only be down a module and not have to send the entire camera in for repair.

Exactly. MAJOR bonus points. Love the way your brain works brotha.

I'm not finding anything in their support documentation or on their forum about importing camera gyro/accel data...
...Anyone have experience applying the data in Mocha Pro?

That may be one very hot potato many won't be able to let go of!
I'm super looking forward to foolmotion!

Damnit that new pl mount is sexy. Can we get an overview post of all the new dsmc2 RED accessories?

Gotta wait a bit for that....we are still waiting for a few really great pieces to come out of the oven :)
