  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC-2, The Weapon, The Scarlet-W and the Raven and the improvements that they bring.

Also there are 1000 different environments that you enter with your camera and sometimes that environment changes half way through the day. You may need a big module with a bunch of outputs in the morning, and then a stedicam or gimbal or drone shows up and that big module no longer fits. Instead of going and renting a different camera you can just change the module.

Thats also a reason why we decided to open up the module platform to 3rd parties this time around. If you look what Mark has done with the OMOD lineup it really is incredible.. he has an option for everyone, something that we could never do all ourselves.

Thanks man. I can only vaguely imagine how crazy it must be to filter out what people want and need...
And I can't wait to see what else will be coming up in the future. The OMODS really look amazing. Can't wait to try these out.
Any info on who else is approved as a RED third party module maker?

One thing that I can't quite wrap my head around is that the DSMC2 only allows for one module at a time as I understood it.
So if you want the functions of a certain module you are always buying all the basic I/O again with it and producers will always need to incorporate these if they want to add something new. Or is there some sort of module-modularity that we don't know about? Like your audio option of the revolt expander and the power option for the base expander which are modules by themselves, too which means to some degree there's the option of having a module for a module. so what can be a "secondary" module and what can't? Can you elaborate on that?

Do you think eventually we will have small module like the DSMC2 Base I/O that will allow to expand to 4 audio inputs, without having to buy a big modules for audio?

Having 8k, a wide lens and gyro data and a nice VFX/Post plugin to post stablize I think would be a really big leap forward.

Also interested in this. The SteadXP thing coming next year uses this tech to track the camera into a virtual camera for post stabilize and probably also VFX tracking (but I haven't got a confirm on that yet).
The Epic Dragon has a gyro, but it doesn't read at full 25fps so it's impossible to get virtual camera track data out of the camera (or rather into the metadata of the R3D file).

I really hope that the processing and tech within the Weapon is able to read full fps gyro data, or at least so it could be implemented in future firmware upgrades. Hopefully up to 60fps since that would cover all regions of the world and HFR productions.

If not I will go with the SteadXP, but it would be nice to have this data in the metadata of the R3D file so we won't have to render out and sync these shots with the virtual camera data based on timecode. Feels like a hassle compared to having it as meta.

That family-picture... phew, one day i'll have a collection of all RED cameras. :) And well, WEAPON 8k, drool!
