  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC-2, The Weapon, The Scarlet-W and the Raven and the improvements that they bring.

Communication here between consumers and corporate is so cool. Then you have a guy like Phil who provide so much detailed info, even cooler... Love this RED Family!

Cheers!

This may be the single best post regarding products I've seen from RED since I started reading on a regular basis in 2009.

I have to agree. This at NAB may have enticed a few more buyers.. of course, some of what was posted may have been invented since NAB. '-)

Fortunately, Phil gave us as much info as we could probably handle at the time.

So badass you can plug both a monitor and EVF in without cords! I do wish the new EVF came in at a wee bit of a better price point...but cant have it all I suppose.

i do wish there was a more simplistic raven(budget) evf, even if it gave no camera info, just so you could look. it's a dream im sure all committed raven buyers want more then anything.

people selling old school EVFs for pretty cheap.. those work on the new dsmc also. but need the lemo adapter

of course, defeats the whole purpose to me though, i want to be cable free!
its just it cost as much as the body if you have a raven, it would be great if there was levels of evf's compatible with the new system :)

Anything new on gyro read outs on the weapon cameras?

Having 8k, a wide lens and gyro data and a nice VFX/Post plugin to post stablize I think would be a really big leap forward.

Now this is a very interesting forward-thinking idea. It would be amazing to have a little button in Premiere and Redcine that stabilizes the footage based on the gyro metadata. I cannot imagine many other ways to improve on the upcoming 8K weapon... But this seems like something very worthwhile and I hope Red looks into the idea in all of their spare time (ha).

We've included the accelerometer data for about 6 months now and its been increased in accuracy over the last few builds. David finchers guys use mocha I believe to use it for stabilization, all that info is sitting on the metadata ready for some smart coder to come along and use however they want :)

So you mean that it does work in the way the SteadXP works?

It's recording position data fast enough to cover 25fps and later syncs it up with timecode and stabilize in their dedicated software.
So if someone would make a plugin or dedicated software for stabilization, it's possible do do the same with the internal gyro of the Weapon as well?

So all that XYZ data is sitting in the metadata. I always do a sensor and gyro/acc calibration after an upgrade and I know this gives you a live horizon line, but now I know that it is much more. Cool. I guess they are using some custom scripts to extract the data and plug it into Mocha's tracker. It's cool because it much be using Z space as Mocha is a planar tracker which is different from what you might find in "regular trackers" in AE or Apple motion. Probably much easier to use mocha in combination with other 3d packages this way and when you have a lot of shots to stabilise that data must be cutting a fair amount of tracking time. It won't help with the roto time though :)

Yes we increased the sample resolution to 1 sample per frame in one of those early weapon builds we released in September. ( it was rather course before that, at about 8 samples per second )

You should be able to make a plugin to do what you are after. Just remember that our accelerometers are extremely sensitive so if you want to use them for stabilization you likely will need to do some rounding to whatever algorithm you use .

Jarred, this is great news!

Why don't get in touch with Apple and Adobe engineers to help them import and manage all these metadatas and have an option inside Premiere / AE or Final Cut Pro X to use this for helping stabilization?

Either metadata alone or averaged by the visual tracking algos? ;)

It would help tremendously the rest 98% of the users / productions out there and would be another HUGE selling point for REDs imho!!!!!

What do you think?

We put the data in there for whoever wants to use it can... thats up to the software companies to implement.

Is it part of a normal SDK you send out, are they likely to code for it? Or should third party non NLEs code for it? I'm just wondering how it all works

Yeah I meant "helping them" AKA lobbying 'n pushing for it to be implemented ASAP he he! ;)

Wow! Awesome! :cheers2: Now I only wished i had coding skills, I would totally make a plugin for AE and Resolve! I've done a lot of tracking stabilizations and made my own solution in AE that's almost exactly like Syntheyes (which they used on Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), but I'm totally lost when looking at the tracking data so I hope someone makes something of this. Is there any difference between the data recorded in Weapon and data from devices like the Iphone in pure coding language? Because if the SteadXP uses the same code for tracking data, you might be able to use their software with the tracking metadata from the R3D files. I'm gonna check with them.

Other than that, it would be awesome if some stabilization tools were put into Redcine-X :thumbup1:
