• Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update

I shot commercials on Epics in March 2011, point was someone was worried Dragon was being rushed. I disagreed.

It's kinda like my favorite gear Podcast (RC Podcast) sometimes you wait, and you wait ... Anxiously hoping to hear some goods from like-minded people and then nothing, but then -- boom it's there, and man it's a great thing... Dragon will be worth whatever time they need... More RC please...

My best Jas...

If the total value of Scarlet Dragon x (upgrade from scarlet x) is going to be more expensive than the new Epic x then does it mean that Scarlet Dragon x will be a better camera than epic x? Logically more money means more quality.

Doing some tests for a shoot. Is it possible to download R3D of mysterium sensor footage anywhere. Not test stuff, some real world use.
I thought that there were loads of people with them in the wilde but that doesn't seem to be any footage around.
Any tips?

The Scarlet Dragon will have better dynamic range, better low light performance and both will be 5K (although the Scarlet with a more restricted field of view) so yes, it is safe to say that the Scarlet Dragon will produce a superior image to an MX Epic - though it will still lack the Epics high FPS. That being said, 60fps 5K, 75 4K and 100 3K is pretty amazing still.

r3d frame grabs or clips?

hmmm... What you mean is Scarlet will have a more restricted field of view because limited to 5K vs the Epic Dragon in 6K, right. In 5K thy will be identical.
Cheers,
Damien

Daniel was comparing Dragon sensor vs MX: they don't have the same number of pixel on a given surface (I don't remember the numbers, but the info is out there). So if both shooting at 5K (same resolution), the image will not cover the same surface - physiacally speaking - on the 2 differnet sensors.

The Dragon sensor having smaller pixels, less surface will be "exposed" for an identical resolution compared to the MX.

Which will end up in a smaller FOV.

Download test footage here Bob:

Each .zip is a different clip.

And remember Dragon has user-based resolution settings.. so you can "match" field of view Dragon to MX-Epic/Scarlet by shooting the adjusted resolution ( i.e. 5.3k for example ) and then use RCX etc. to balance the output.

BTW.. Dragon is kicking ass..

Haha jarred. Those four words about dragon are going to equal about a thousand comments and more theories.

BTW.. Dragon is kicking ass..Ok but any dates this sucka gonna land, Mr Land?

Heh heh.. when it is ready. We really are taking our time with this one. Patience is a virtue Jim and I really never had much time for in the past, but for this it is proving to be worth it.

The Dragon as it sits today in terms of reliability and development is well past what Epic was when we shipped it. The power boards came in as expected and the Engineers are tightening things up. We are giving them as much time as they need and Graeme will give his final blessing when Dragon is fully baked.

We are finding wonderful things out along the way.. like just how incredible we can make the no-penalty low ISOs.

I probably should stop talking...

No one told you to stop talking... Keep going ... ;)

Dragon is the best :-)

I love low light and high ISO and Dragon's 2000+ ISO will be fantastic but if you can go to low ISO with no-penalty that would be a nice surprise !!
Maybe I'm dreaming but a good 100 or 50 iso for day exteriors to avoid using tons of ND when it is not needed would rock, even if exposure has to be more controlled and carefully set

:-))

Yes, low iso would be fantastic. How does that actually work Jarred? For the uninvited it seems like one could "just" read the sensors faster to produce ISO 50, 25 etc to reduce light. Is that an engineer/physical limitation that makes it impossible to read so fast. I'm just curious why cameras do not have lower ISO in general, but I'm sure there is a reason.
Best

If you read faster it means a faster "shutter" speed with the associated side effects.
A true low ISO mode would require less light hitting the sensor data while still exposing for the desired integration time to keep motion intact (ie 1/48s for classic film look)

intrigued, but Jarred said he should stop talking so we might need for Dragon to be unleashed to try to understand how it works...
