In less than 4 months I turn 60 (ouch - pains me to say it) but, partially thanks to RED, I am having the time of my life and fully expect the next two decades to be the most enjoyable, most productive and most satisfying of my life. I LOVE this shit! RED keeps it exciting and I want to personally thank Jim and all his crew for doing what they do. You can get bored with a lot of things over 60 years so it's really cool to find something this much fun when you aren't expecting it.

Post of the month :)

It pains me when the Epic seats still doing nothing, but even when the camera does nothing is always doing something every time I look at it... It inspires me to use it, so I write some more with it, then I think about all of those that can't have one but want one or at list want to use one, and I go out of my way to make it happen, you give good news Jim, I look forward to give some too, and put EPIC Cameras in the hands of HUNDREDS of Students each year... Can't wait, and the price reduction announcement could not have come at a better time, but fact is... There is nothing else out there that interests me... Love RED... ;)

And of course the competition it is trying very hard to respond, but so far Canon with over $12,000 1D body claim 4k is not cutting it, and now Sony claimer of the 4K innovation (B... Caugh... S Caugh) and now with their new CineAlta announcement... ?

At list it is good that RED really is awakening this sleeping dudes... ;)

Jim you are so right.. but you know how its hurts and what it mean ...when you buy a mediacomposer for 200.000$ and a half year later the First hd-Version cost only 30.000$

I think we can all agree that it is normal for cameras to sell for cheaper and go down in value over time... We all know it sucks for us customers who already have the camera.

We can't fight it... we just hope you guys don't drop the value too much too soon on us :/

You never did it to our Red Ones... Sucks it's happening to our Epics...

This is what I've been saying in the other thread... if people complain about technology dropping in price they are actually trying to break Moore's law and the punishment for that is ridicule.

An investment is just that, an investment. It's supposed to bring value to something else then the product itself. If you invest in something, just for the thing, you will find yourself wondering what the hell you bought. An investment, in this case a camera, should bring you something else then a second hand value. Technology will never bring you second hand value, it will only disappoint in that area. What you do get, is like Jim say's, a value in what you do. It gives you the most beautiful images you couldn't have afforded a few years ago. If you complain about a price drop, then I think you devalue most of all what you do with what you have.

...and if you didn't earn money with your camera and feel ripped off, why the hell did you buy something like that? Seriously?

An investment is where you buy something that where you hope it will increase in value, property, stocks etc. Have anyone seriously thought their cameras will ever be MORE valuable after a few years time? ;-)
I buy a camera fully aware that it will decrease in value, hoping to recoup the cost (and making money off it) buy renting it out and gaining valuable experience along the way.
Buying an EPIC-M has opened a lot of doors for me and my partner. Can´t wait to see what the future holds.
Keep up the good work

EDIT: Wrote my post at the same time as you Glans, so didn´t read your post until after I posted mine. Looks like we agree

innovation : Aaton Delta

innovation : Aaton Delta

I think it is safe to assume that RED will continue lead the professional camera industry. Everything I have seen from the "others" is a reaction, not vision. We are working on things that defy description. They are a bit away from being realized to our customers... but coming.

The punchline is that people need to buy what they can use, use it and make money. Produce. I am quite comfortable that EPIC is as useful a tool as it gets.

Jim

I congratulate you Jim and the rest of the Red team for daring to go where no one has. I am so happy to have been along for the ride since the begining. I would just lke to mention there is one company that is not just reacting but also striving for innnovation. I had the chance to see what they were up to while at IBC this year. I'm talking about Aaton. I had a chance to see the new Delta (previously Penelope Delta). It has a 3.5K CCD sensor, which vibrates, that is moves 1/2 pixel in four directions, giving increased resolution in movement (kind of like different grain structure betwen frames on film) AND it has a global mechanical shutter AND their revolutionary blade system, allowing true native ISO of 800 AND 100 ASA by cutting light without the use of NDs or infrared contamination AND the images are recorded as RAW DNG on off the shelf SSDs. To me they are really striving to offer something different, something new and developing new technology. The only thing alas that is not revolutionary, is the price. The Delta will cost somewhere around 100'000 Euros. Nevertheless interesting, I won't be able to afford one, but I will rent one when I get a chance. Now I know you guys have some things up your sleeves. The future promises to be interesting. I just wanted to give credit where credit is due, which doesn't take anything away from what you've done, which is incredible. THANK YOU

Cheers,
Damien

To me, buying a RED is kind of a one time buy. Once your in the "ecosystem" you get free software upgrades, you upgrade the sensor. If its physical impossible to upgrade your brain anymore you trade it in and go from there. Its true amazing that people that live far from rental houses still can give there clients the very best. I will never forget what RED done for me.

Scarlet ticked so many of my 'must have' boxes nearly a year ago when red.com was used and abused as people constantly were hitting the refresh button to try and place an order.

I can only imagine how many boxes Dragon will tick.. boxes that I didnt even consider before...

If you are looking at value in a camera... look to yourself. It is up to you to make the most of this. Cameras are investments... an investment in you.

Sometimes Jim, your words are just an echo of my own thoughts and choices. I've been investing a lot lately, the best bet anyone's got is to invest in themselves.

My history with RED and cinema photography.

2005 = A believer before I had the money.
2012 = A believer with the money.

7 years in between. A believer in myself, my family and a few close friends.

I'm a mid-adopter who ordered a scarlet on Nov 4rd.
Happy with it as can be!

Hope you at Red stay healthy and make more money out of your great gear!
As my camera package is complete, of course I would prefer that you'd rather use your growing headroom of benefits
for putting it into the development and roll out of the scarlet dragon path (at an even more moderate price).

But I'm also happy if your cameras become cheaper so we see more of them soon over here in Arriland!

You know best how to steer this boat.
I'm just thrilled and waiting.

Congratulations and a big "Thank you" for what you achieved!!!

Very wise words Jim, and ever so important in today's age of technology.

On another note, after the announcement of the F55 I'm really keen to see what you and your magic fairies can do in the coming months, not years, as for the first time IMHO...Sony just served it to you for competition! Game on Jim, that F55 is killer! This is what you wanted, hope your excited? Let the fireworks begin...very exciting times!

I'm glad that RED now as some good competition. Please keep on point with DSMC... it's a great vision that it seems has had some back tracking on. I would like the ability to metatag a still image... that alone would save me from buying a new DSLR. What's keeping you guys from adding this?
