  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Built-In ND's - Why doesn't Weapon have them?

If that were the case, why do Amira, Alexa XT, Sony f65, Canon c500 etc have built in nd's? All full production cameras capable of shooting feature films.

Correct. However, Weapon now has WiFi built in which opens up a few doors here that weren't before there.

Glass ND filter will come to the red system
It's a matter of time , be patient it's on the way
 
I'd like to see the tessive filter / Motion Mount technology progress even further, with 99% transparent screen / glass and maybe built in the future sensor block. Full integration with the sensors, auto-calibration, easy switch between global, square and soft shutter etc. Makes sense to me, I guess the tech side is a year or couple years away. I doubt we'll see the good ole internal ND option like in Arri and Sony cameras. I remember, that for years some people asked for rotary shutter option and even optical viewfinder. I guess they eventually moved on to F65 and Alexa Studio.
 
Can't wait for Motion Mount 2.0. The current version is not that capable with its light loss, light loss, and light loss. Internal ND's or motion mount is very important since they can really be custom made for a specific sensor, hence no color cast or any other short comings that traditional third party ND's have.

Resolution? you mean frame rate right?
 
Is it possible they are working on a digital ND filter? That is, will the firmware be able to tell the sensor to emulate an ND filter? If they are... much better solution.
 
In theory, future sensors could not need NDs at all and could have dynamic photosite charge and read-outs allowing us to define our operational DR, base sensitivity and other factors.

Zeb, you really need to chill...

Firstly - SIDE HANDLE is not discontinued. It is designed for current Epic and Scarlet cameras that will continue to be part of the line up for a foreseeable future...
The new SH for WEAPON is not a replacement for current DSMC SH - that would imply you can attach it to the Epic / Scarlet - which is clearly not going to be the case.
The new SH for WEAPON is therefore a new product specifically developed for the WEAPON...

I agree that it would be nice to be able to use current DSMC accessories and modules on the new WEAPON - but for one reason or another RED is using different interconnects. I doubt they changed this with the single purpose of "screwing" with us. There has to be a technical reason linked to a major improvement justifying this change IMHO...

Secondly - RED has confirmed that ET is working on SH for the WEAPON. ET is now owned by and therefore a part of RED. ET's products for RED are for all given purposes RED's products...

But the part you are missing the most is that WEAPON is not yet shipping. I am sure there will be ton of accessories (that we don't even know about yet) available when the WEAPON finally ships. Even if there is a slight delay - this is not unlike what happened with accessories for Epic. They also lagged behind the brains. On top of everything else - RED is now also opening to 3-rd party developers. OFFHOLLYWOOD is a perfect example. I am sure there will be SH offerings for the WEAPON both from RED and 3rd parties...

I highly recommend switching from crack pipe to mineral spring water... ;o)

..But wouldn't it be cool with auto-ND behind the iris? Just set the lens to whatever you want and wait for 2 min until exposure is correct. Probably takes just as long for B-photo guy walk over to camera cart and replace ND's. And situation you can not handle camera and not have remote motors mounted. Me as a lazy fudger would really use it all the time.

..EDIT: and kinda cool of RED made this having it's soul in the sun-shade field ;)

Mmmm... just food for thought, I feel like this would cause levels of inconsistency in terms of noise and consistency in DR in general. Example. One shot has a lower exposure bracket and the next shot has a higher one, but they're cut as part of the same scene. Now one shot may look like it has more DR and a different level of noise. Probably not noticable for 90% of projects which will be streamed over the web/phone, but seems like the processing involved would ultimately get in the way of matching.
 
Havn't read every post, just a quick glance. Think variable high quality variable ND. So simple.
 
excuse me but a wireless follow focus doesn't come with a red, you can add THC or that WCU4 to a red if you want to equate that into the price but last time i checked only the alexa studio or plus has that stuff built into it, so don't play games here guys, red doesn't have an advantage there, but Plus and Studio do and its built in.

also you don't need the arri viewfinder/eye cup on your mini, a 7q or whatever is fine. its a pretty damn affordable camera when you kit it that way, yes it can only do 60 fps in uprezzed UHD or 30fps raw internally, but its an arri and has some stuff going for it roll off wise, 4/3 wise, dynamic range wise, color wise, brand equity wise, historically wise, etc...this counts for a lot, despite the obvious limitations in specs compared to any of the reds.

another advantage is it doesn't change field of view to shoot 200fps, so noise levels don't get drastically worse either. i think this camera will be a huge hit, it already is without being out yet cuz there are thousands of orders and market is more than saturated before its even shipped with orders. that being said i still have faith and respect for red so i put 15k down for now on them... but I'm watching the mini too and it looks pretty good, needs no blackshades at all, ever. so like if you include functionality that parts even better than weapon... all these tools have ebbs and flows in different ways. i like a lot of what the amira or mini does and on go skate day this year i think i might shoot arri for the first time instead of red, the built in NDs will be nice for run and gun. ill use red pro primes if i can though, just to piss both parties off lol

I'm shooting with the Amira (mini has the same sensor) at the moment and am not that hot about this camera. Viewfinder (same for the mini) im my opinion is not as good as the RED evf. I am pretty sure the dynamic range is at least 1.5 less than RED Dragon. And I still think 6k is better than 3,2k;-)
And I can shoot REAL HDR if I like.
