  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

We also purchased the Canon 85mm f/1.2 but it did NOT function with Birger. However, Erik assured me Birger is aware of the problem and it will be fixed on the next software release.

Just to clarify... the manual focus is not functional, the iris is functional, as described yesterday in my post.

The 85 f/1.2 just plain rocks, BUT... the manual focus knob is not functional with the release software. The manual focus does work with a debug version, so it should be easy to get it back in with a few hours on the bench. This is actually the best behavior with a knob, as disabling the focus control on the lens ensures that the lens will track the knob without error. Full time manual focus isn't always a good thing...

Erik, I sent an e-mail a few months ago saying that I now want it ASAP rather than waiting until the knobs ship but didn't hear back. Am I back on the list?

Also, my credit card number recently got jacked and replaced. I'm afraid to call, but I want to make sure you get a working number!

Please Advise!

Thom

Yes David that is an excellent idea. As you all know my inner child loves numbers and lists. Must have been a mathematician in a former life.

I am doing research online on lenses all the time, but with real world tests with the Birger Mount, that would rock!

I suggest you and videodisc (and others) canvas Evin to set it up ASAP. As the mount starts landing on more Reds, we need to have a concise location for these 'smart' mounts ... kind of a 'knowledge repository' for all those known issues, firmware fixes, tips and tricks rather than blah/blah noise ;-) otherwise we might as well set up a wiki somewhere ...

the birger mount wonderful, very nice

that looks very nice... a quick question though... with the collimation mount gone.. and stuff.. does this void the warranty?

or did I just get out of a cave.

akube.. jarred's word:

"Nope.. Birger mount originally had issues, but we worked with Eric and the Birger mount now is approved by RED. You obviously will need to send the camera back though with the RED PL mount attached, for both the Audio board upgrade plan and the Trade in Program."

How to order/shipping status.

How to order/shipping status.

Here's the .pdf order form.

http://www.birger.com/pdf/cinema_orderform.pdf

they are building in volume now and have been shipping final production mounts for a couple weeks, so I think they expect to ship all of the original 200+ orders by next month so should be available for new orders end of november/december - but I think Erik is supposed to get married sometime in there so might be a bit of variation there.

Well well ... the man from FedEx finally (!) arrived and Birger is on the RED and working ;-)

The adjustment screw (collimator) is all the way home (ie : had to apply no turns) and all lenses tested so far are very very close to the mark (one bang on and the other very slightly off) ... infinity can be reached fine; surprised I did not have to do ANY racking out of the mount.

So far tested :
- Canon 24/1.4
- Canon 100/2.8
- Canon 16-35/2.8 Mk2
- Canon 15/2.8
- Canon 70-200/2.8 IS

Next to test (outside) .... Canon 400/2.8 IS and will try the Canon x1.4 multiplier for good measure ;-)
Tokina 11-16/2.8 has not arrived yet ...

Looking forward to trying IS (and borrowing a 17-55/2.8 IS)

Press middle button : lens moves from min-to-max-to-min focus marks (and settles at min mark) ...
Press top-&-bottom marks together : lens opens to widest aperture
Press bottom button : aperture stops down (1/2 or 1/3 ?)
Press top button : aperture opens up (1/2 or 1/3 ?)
Unless I'm doing something wrong, one HAS to press middle button (focus calibration) and top+bottom buttons to calibrate aperture when swapping lenses.

What's the 'thingy' at the top of the mount ... Bluetooth antenna ? wireless ? to control what ? (aside from firmware updates)

So far sooooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooooooood ... leaving the mount to warm up and see if all is stable.

Cheers & thank you Erik & Birger team ... (focus knob and we are there)

EDIT : Oh and the lens mount is VERY solid ... much more positive than the old Nikon mount I had & WILL POST pictures ASAP and some frame grabs at week-end when I'll have spare time ;-)

So David, have you been able to do some more testing this week-end? I'm very curious of the results with the lenses you mentionned. And also about real-world useability of IS!

Indeed ... weather here in the UK has been very yuk over the week-end, so I spent time thinking / planning / designing a housing ;-)
As soon as it stops pissing down, I will do some outdoor testing, including IS ...

PS : Erik, really need to see what those pots of yours look like (to control aperture / focus) ...

Let me jump in with a question about Birger mount software (firmware) update, just to know in advance how it works. What is the procedure? Does that require a Mac or PC? (I hope both are supported).
Is some special rs232 connector required or can updates be uploaded wirelessly?
Erik, can you broadcast software update so all your mounts in the world could be updated simultaneously? ;-)
Thanks!

Wow, this place is like a ghost town. Where did everyone go? Am I the only one who still doesn't have a mount?

Most of us don't have a mount, we're on bated breath at least until Wednesday. Hopefully good news will shower us this evening.
