  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Wow, this place is like a ghost town. Where did everyone go? Am I the only one who still doesn't have a mount?

Maybe it's because Dow Jones took a hit today and people are drinking in despair... :umm: Look at the bright side folks: Birger mounts are shipping and filmmaking is going to be even more fun! :)

What's Wednesday? I thought he had 50 ready to go last week and was going to ship a bunch Friday.

Erik said they'd ship the first batch between the 2nd and 8th of October. The 8th is Wednesday, so that's the last day that group #1 should have to wait for their mounts.

I figured Birger would finally make this deadline, what with having 50 mounts ready to go and a couple of people actually having receiving their mounts. Things do seem awfully quiet though. Maybe Erik is holding onto the 50 for another day of testing.

We were holding on for another day of testing. Tracking numbers for many mounts late today. Tracking numbers for even more tomorrow. Thanks to all for keeping the phones quiet. Any specific email requests for "where's my mount" or "when will it be shipped" will not be answered until morning.

I just had to track down a box of LEMO connectors that did not show up this morning. So until it arrives tomorrow morning we are short a few cables for batch #2. This is the only issue that I am presently worried about.

It has been crazy around here getting all these shipments ready to go, and getting ready for the wedding. Just picked up the rings... This will be my last update until wednesday.

Erik,

Congratulation for your wedding and the release of the mounts.

Let me know if you need any help to support your products in Japan.

I know I keep harping on this, but when are we going to be getting wireless and knobs? You guys who have been waiting for forever for the Birger to give you a dumb mount should have bought the dumb Nikon and a couple of $100 lenses.

That isn't accurate, the mount controls iris - the most critical function and can be used to control focus and iris remotely via a computer.

With that said, I'm pushing for knobs too as it isn't very easy to control in our underwater housing without them.

Weather is still s**t every time I have time to get out and play ;-)

No lens has failed so far (aperture control) ... clearly focusing manually (however they all appear to 'map' the focus range ok on hitting the middle button). Tried a couple of Sigma lenses today, and they also worked fine (I think one was a 15-30 and the other was a fish-eye). An old Canon 50mm macro also worked fine.

Awaiting the focus the knob ... any news about the equivalent for us underwater folk (pot only ?) ?

One thing I've noticed is that if I switch on IS it stays on all the time. Especially noticeable on the 400mm.

Some pics below ...

Thanks for the great pics David. I plan to use those lenses when I'm luck enough to receive my Birger mount. I see from the photo of the 400mm f/2.8, you are using an upside-down universal mount for lens support. Does work very well? Are you using any sort of adjustable screw to secure it?

Thanks

At the moment it's very crude (but feels solid enough), a stack of wide washers with a regular tripod screw ! ... will get a wide base ALU block machined up and will carry on using a regular tripod screw ;-) seems to work fine.

For the 70-200 I'm not sure yet ... quite a gap to fill up ... still thinking about a simple gap filler ;-)

EDIT : core principle at the moment is to re-use as many of the standard parts ... problem is that the RED accessories are all way too heavy ;-(

whatever you work out for the 70-200 there's probably more than one person also needing that solution, so if you figure something out, count me in for one.

FWIW, Zacuto offer very nice lens supports.

Not cheap, but very nicely made.
And they ship really fast; it took them all of 2 hours to get my order out the door.

Cheers,
Hans

Edit: I just checked with my 400mm f5.6 and the Zacuto center post does NOT extend high enough (from the 19mm rails).
I'll mail them and ask if they can offer a longer center post.

I met Erik and Amy in person for the first time at the NAB Reduser party.
They make a fabulous couple and I wish them all the happiness they can handle.

if you won't post pics here me will not believe.. where are they?..

Ha! That's my question to Erik every week. We will probably get them about the same time or a little earlier than the knobs - since we only need the encoder portion for the underwater housing.

same here!
