RED Komodo-X

Hello everyone, is the black version of Komodo-X scheduled to start shipping at the end of this month as planned?

From what Jarred has recently posted it looks like black Komodo-X production is ramping up and some will start shipping within the next few weeks.

I'll have to find a way to host the ProRes encode as that really shows the goodness in motion. YouTube's recompression is frightening on that log footage. If you notice, when the image is slightly too clean and flat in this case, it just makes blocks and weird strobing. They need to fix that encoder because even my encodes with the same codecs they use don't look like that. I'm sure it's a balance of processing time and storage though.

Thank you though. I did spend a lot of time looking at these, which was actually very informative comparing them all side by side. I might dive deeper later on all this, but the summary is in the piece's title really. Hopefully those title inserts were enjoyable as well. Moderately selected those to emphasize the results shown.

Dear Phil,
Thanks a lot for your test. I would love to have some frame grab r3d (just one/camera)... is it possible?
Do you still have your VV Monstro or a sample of the chart with that "old" ;-) camera to compare?

Thanks
Patrick

Just got shipping notification today for my black Komodo-X!
Looks like Pro I/O module will ship in August.

Not quite a review but an excellent showcase of KX in action.
I can see that video alone getting many cameras sold.

It kind of motivated me to push up my timetable of purchasing this camera.
I'm already happy with the 2 Komodos I have but have to admit the frame rates/resolution
options KX have help manage an occasional pain point felt with Komodo.

The hype on the AF seemed a little off though.
"Manual AF" is welcome for productions that couldn't afford a focus puller
but for a variety of reasons it will not be putting ACs out of business.
I'm sure the banter on that was not but so serious but wonder if it will create unrealistic expectations.
If RED develops their AF more that sentiment may change.

The paring of a workhorse feature set with the KX small size and weight
make it something quite unique as a camera.

My only remaining quibble is RED not designing the option for 4 channels of XLR audio
for those that need it.

It's still seems to be a very well thought out and executed camera.

Whatever the case, I'm working on the gameplan to comfortably get this camera
to add to the toolset.

I'm curious what scenario are you in that requires 4 channels coming into camera?

Something RED should really consider doing is to make all the awesome 5-pin audio cables from Alvin's Cables and others available through their site or on their 3rd party listings. So satisfying having a direct 5-pin to mic connections rather than a separate XLR module. Takes down so much bulk on a rig.

Documentary when I have multiple talent on lavs (anywhere from 2-4) or when I have a mix of lavs and a shotgun mic.

For smaller budget narrative shoots I've also used up to 4 channels as well.

Usually for budget reasons shoots can't always sustain a separate sound recordists except maybe for larger shoot days where more audio inputs
are needed or I can strongly make the argument that it's unrealistic to have audio going into the camera.

The RED One MX was actually quite good for these scenarios.

My Komodo-X arrived today! This thing is so damn adorable with the Nano-V batteries. "I AM A CINEMA CAMERA I AM NOT ADORABLE "

Going to charge up these little Nano batteries and see how much run-time to expect. My serial is in the 1200s so they are cranking them out pretty quick.

Showing around 1:30 run-time on a fully charged Red Nano-V 49Wh battery recording MQ 23.98 with no other accessories attached. Not bad.

Drops around 15mins total record time when attaching a SmallHD Cine-5 with 2-pin to P-tap power cable. Much more compact setup than you can do on a normal Komodo. No need for batteries on the display, or battery plate on the camera. If you are considering a Komodo as a main camera, spend the extra money on the Komodo-X. Absolute no brainer. Locations of ports are way more convenient. Locking RF mount. Way easier to drive on camera mics with direct 5-pin to TRS or XLR cables without additional adapters. I have the Pro I/O module on the way and just looking at the relative size in the images I have seen that will be an amazing setup when using with larger lenses to balance things out.

Once RED starts selling an RMI 5" or 5.5" display going to be even simpler setups. Can't wait.

Red Komodo-X used in video

I dipped into Scott Balkum's livestream today, which he does every Friday nearly, and was treated to Jarred not only stopping by, but also:

I’m a bit confused, I see that PetaPixel is reporting that Nikon in fact won the lawsuit against Red. Which is how all the new Nikons can now support internal compressed Raw. I’m referring to this video at 11:09 timestamp. So does this mean soon we will see internal compressed Raw as a standard feature on other cameras?

I think he was just associating Nikon being able to use their flavor of Raw with Nikon actually Winning the lawsuit against RED. The Suit was dropped I believe "WITHOUT PREJUDICE" so If RED wanted to, they could take Nikon back to court.
