  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Dragon Dynamic Range ++

Thanks Tom for this preview of Dragon,

Is it possible to play with the R3D? ;-)
Or could you post a 6k Tiff?
What compression was used?
Any filters? Low con? ;-)

I would love to see that shadow in the elefant belly!

Have a nice shoot!

I just put this quick chart under the Photo of the Elephant; I thought I would share-it!

Progression of 17 T-stops (0.35-0.5-0.7-1-1.4-2-2.8- 4-5.6-8-11-16-22-32-44–64-88) are powers of the square root of √2.
ASA/ISO 125-250-500-1,000-2,000–4,000–8,000–16,000–32,000–64,000–128,000–250,000-500,000-1,000,000 ASA/ISO

Tom:

Great shot and great job. I especially like the angle.

Too bad it was graded as we don't get to see the before/after, or what grading edits were done, or software and process that were used, etc. Not that the grading actually takes away from the DR displayed in the still or anything like that.

Also, would love to see a side-to-side comparison between Dragon and Epic. I believe many of us are expecting this.

Keep up the good work!

Awesome shot Tom!

THANKS!

Great shot Tom...

Over the years, folks have discussed attributes of "the filmic look," including 24FPS, shallow DOF, grain, grading, etc... but dynamic range has to be one of the biggies. Not only does film have a wide DR, but with talented used of expensive lighting, movies generally have a well balanced look to them. I know lighting will ALWAYS play an integral role, but it is nice to know what one can achieve using only natural lighting with Dragon's wide DR.

Just curious, can the Sigma DP1 Merrill do 85fps?
:sifone:

Brice, are you kidding?

DP1 Merrill is a stil photo camera and can't do 85fps BUT you should know it's obviously has more MTF that any cine digital camera at any time soon.

But it was not my question about doing high speed @ 85fps and the right question somehow despairs in the forum noise.

Again I asked how much is possible to push and pull shadows and highlights with Dragon?

Very easy to understand!!!

Also some people mixed a high contrast with a dynamic range that was a bit strange in a way!!!!!

A quote for an additional education:

"Overall, the dynamic range of a digital camera can therefore be described
as the ratio of maximum light intensity measurable (at pixel saturation),
to minimum light intensity measurable (above read-out noise)."

No I'm not, you no I'm an idiot when it is about talking camera and gears. ;-)
