  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

scarlett competitors in near future

I am waiting for scarlet. But may get a Panasonic gh1 with tester 13 Hack for a B roll camera while I wait ,but maybe not. Probably i will just wait. Burn the heads of my panasonic Dvx1000. Just gave my gl2 to my son to create the space for scarlet.............................Here it comes.......................

A camera that requires a laptop or a tablet pc attached doesn't really appeal. Unless you like to strap it to the camera with duck-tape. :badputer:

The problem with a lot of these new raw cameras is that they only film up to HD / 2K where RED goes much further. You also need all sorts of other guff attached via wires to make the shoot possible. If you are running around with a camera, you'll need someone else running around with you in-tandem with all thats required... and not forgetting the poor old sound man being dragged behind with his boom mic!

The new RED line of cameras are superb!! They are modular. Everything you'll ever need in clip-on modules all on a light-weight sesame-seed "Brain".

I think I'll do the wise thing and wait for my RED.

They'll be plenty of gunk mounted on Scarlet/Epic. Sure, you'll be able to use it naked, but by the time video senders, downconverters, audio receivers and the all rest are attached it will look just as much like a Frankenstein creation as many other cameras.

We recently used a Redlake high-speed camera for some dance sequence inserts for a feature and somehow or other we began referring to it as the "hairdryer". Needless to say this was not a term of affection.

No, the only thing you've missed is his logic.

Aside from that, no official announcements and based on what RED crew is saying, it's still looking like 2010.

Let's hope.

Only thing I am missing is my SCARLET....

As Jesse Jackson once said in between hookers.... KEEP HOPE ALIVE KEEP HOPE ALIVE...

2011 Fall....perfect Xmas gift for that aging independent filmmaker....hahahah

I will bet you $500 that Scarlets will not be available this year for us commoners.....
we can let Jim hold onto it at corporate and Jan 3rd 2011 I will come by and pick up my 1000 dollars and a RED TShirt to start the New Year...

Some people might retro up their Scarlet with all sorts of add-ons, but I shoot corporate stuff and I've never needed all the other stuff you've mentioned.

I know you can bulk up any camera setup, even the tiny Sony EX-3 could be made to look like a work of art. Most people on here seem to be shooting with everything including the kitchen sink. The most I've ever attached on to a camera is a sound engineers boom mic and maybe a 14" LCD monitor. All other stuff I've filmed has been shoulder mount running here and there like a headless chicken, just me and the camera. Cameras that require an extra video deck or PC strapped to it is just impractical for my use. For those who shoot on film sets, studio shoots, etc... it wouldn't really matter what you've got attached because you're not needing to be so light & mobile.

For an example of something I'll be shooting is a job coming up in the next couple of weeks. I am going be climbing up a 100ft dock-side crane with a DVCPro HD camera, just to get some good shots of a harbour.

A new, very very very low cost, DSLR type HD format camera with HDSDI output to be revealed at IBC.

Also a new 4K camera and a compact super 35mm sensor camera.

This competition is good news as Scarlet will have to stand on its own to feet based on its price features and performance.

Whoa, crazy talk : )

Aug 31st, Canon Introduces Two New Compact XF-Series Professional Camcorders: XF105 And XF100...

And Everybody yawns...

"Boo" to the Canon Pro Video department for repacking last years technology in a smaller package with 3D synch...

what wrong with that?

Sweet! I hope RED makes a Proton Pack too!!! Might as well bust some ghosts in your downtime. :zombie_smiley:

Everyone except the ENG market... for a reported $2500 camera, it looks interesting.. Solid state recording at 50mbps 4:2:2 ... sounds like a great B cam for ENG work.

Game on, indeed! I am not sure of it is a digital cinema (RAW) camera, but I am extremely intrigued by the few specs released. In fact, I haven't been so intrigued by a camera since the Scarlet announcement! I have no doubt Canon have been working on this camera for a long time. Can't wait to find out more.

XF100 is dull, however. It seems like a $1k HF S21 souped up with pro features with a smaller (yes, smaller) sensor. The 4:2:2 codec will no doubt interest the broadcast audience though.

Adding a 4:2:2 codec sounds nice, but does the broadcast community need yet another LONG GOP MPEG 1/3" integrated lens camera?

I think the zoom lens could be key... 28mm-440mm is pretty special.

I think DR and codec will be the downside though... possibly low light too.... alot of pixels squeezed onto 2/3".

If it comes in under $10k and is launched fairly soon though, there will be some decisions to be made by alot of people.

Well, it's certainly more interesting than LONG GOP 4:2:0!

Unfortunately, Philip mentions that it is only a concept and won't be available any time soon. Still, who knows? They seem to have a (partially) working prototype up-and-running.

It definitely seems inspired by Scarlet - DSMC style body.

And, yes, 4K to 2/3" means tiny pixels. But I suppose you can overcome deficiencies by intelligent pixel design.

A follow up question would be - is there a version of Canon's 4:2:2 LONG GOP MPEG codec that can encode 4K?

I don't think so, so it would be interesting to know what resolution is claimed for the recording, and what it records to.

Also interesting they chose to show a concept camera in 2/3" optical format - maybe they agree with us on that optical format's utility ? :-)

Anyway, we welcome the challenge.
