  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weird, I'm sure the Inclino wasn't that big before!!

I think this is the first picture I've seen with the Inclino clearly attached to a Red for size reference. Looking at Viewfactor's website, it appears this really is the size.

Bigger than expected, but hell, as long as it works...

Yes this is the first time I see it in relate to a lens and a camera body.
I will handle its size as long it delivers the remote focus task.

I've been holding the LCD for a few months with a nano clamp and no slipping. I think there originally was a piece of plastic on the grippy parts of the clamp. I took those off...

thanks

I'll dig them out and try...

I thought the plastic pad was for grip because it is not designed (like a speedy) for an exact bar..

kind regards

The focus motor needs to have a bracket so it doesn't come straight from the rod but rather you can create an angle between the rod and the focus gear

That should be possible with the motor itself - if you look at it it has a joint

This looks not so good.
1. Is there a room to mount a clip-on matte box on the lens?

On the standard speeds, there wouldn't be much room. I think you still can fit it on, but it will be pretty close.

2. The focus motor needs to have a bracket so it doesn't come straight from the rod but rather you can create an angle between the rod and the focus gear (I may be not expressing my self clear, but whoever is working with remote focus knows what i mean). Unless there is a bracket there and the motor is just set in a straight line.

It will actually do what you are asking. If you look were the cable is plugged into the motor, that circle there is actually what it can rotate off of. So basically, when you have the screw loose that holds it onto the rod, it will rotate on the rod and on that big circle (I'm talking about where those 6 little black screws are in a circle.) To be honest, that is 10x better than the Haden motor. It would only pivot on 1 axis-the rod. Plus, the tightening knob was getting in the way.

3. The motor looks quite big. if that is an Arri standard it can explain the ratio but still it looks quite big even for Ultra, Cooke S4 and even Master.
Would like to hear more from people who are experiencing the viewfactor system.
I am waiting on mine for ... who counts the months, and I was hoping it would be a handy system and replace the old manual style on a regular use.

The motor is much bigger than I was expecting. I think one of the things that makes it seem much bigger is the gear disc. It's about 4x bigger than the Haden gear. However, I did find that better as when I tried turning the Haden motor around, it wouldn't reach the lens gears because the body on one side was bigger-whereas this is equal on both sides, plus it had two axis pivoting.

I think for most shoots, this will replace a traditional follow focus. I've used it for the past two days on tabletop work and it was great. Big rack focuses didn't have and shaking and was easy to do. Not to mention that I could get focus on a 17" monitor without having to go into 1:1 mode on the camera.

Nice! What Steadicam is that? Is the focus puller using the Red LCD?

I believe it was a old Master Series rig. However, it needed some repair work done on it. I was focusing by numbers off the marking disc as the Steadicam op was using the LCD to monitor with.

Hi Matthew,

On your picture, I love the Bartech receiver underneath all powered up just waiting to take over the VFS...
Bigger diameter of the gear on the motor also means a better "speed•travel" ratio on the lens it drives (just look at the M1 motor gear, it's a monster)
so the VFS as one great opportunity to make a difference here regarding speed and torque.
I , with others here, am very anxious to see the VFS perform in "real" situations.
As a steadicam operator, I need a motor that can drive a lens with a clip on matte box (like a lmb-5 from arri) fully loaded (2-3 filters) on a good old zeiss lens where the weight of the clip-on acts as a break on the focus gear.
I also want to see it drive a cooke S4 in sub freezing temperatures (i'm in canada). And I want to see it not interfere with other departments (sound or video assist) .
I am spoiled with my Preston and would just love to have a smart/cost effective alternative like the VFS as a back-up unit.
90% of my steadicam jobs require to pull focus with the remote and that's it. The other 10% will be extras like iris, zoom, ramping ...but then, the remote is the most critical piece of equipment I have in my kit: Nobody will notice if a battery dies, you just grab another one, a cable breaks, you pull another one from the case, the EVF goes down, you frame with the monitor...but if the remote focus does not work, you are fried and everyone notices it. That's when customer service makes a huge difference in our small world.
I can't start praising the service I received from Jim Bartell (Bartech), Leticia (Preston), David Hable (Scorpio remote dealer in canada).
If there is a piece of equipment that is being thrown around a lot, it's the remote hand unit. When it goes down, you want to have someone on the phone with a solution. If Curt and his team can offer such service , then people will do business with them. Simple but true.

I will be following with great interest the evolution of VFS and it's products as they seem to have a fabulous cost effective solution regarding wireless focus pulling. For now, this company seems to have a few issues to resolve .
I 'll let them get their heads out of the water for now.
Good luck to all (VFS and all their customers)

How much does the Inclino weigh??? I'm running a reasonably heavy Actioncam rig right now and I would love to not add too much more weight to the system. What with a lens, the Redrock mattebox, etc., I'm getting fairly close to edge of the standard Actioncam configuration.

I'm wondering if I really want to go the Birger route now. . .

Stephen

Are we going to see anyone from VF at NAB? If my orders are ready by then, I rather pick up my stuff at NAB directly instead of waiting for the fedex guys to turn up (And VF will save alot of money not having to ship all the orders (I guess most of us are visiting NAB))....

I seriously doubt if anyone will be able to pick up their VF stuff even if they do come to NAB. As you might be able to understand - it would be a logistical nightmare for them.

A final decision. . .

A final decision. . .

I have officially decided, and have already sent View Factor notification, to cancel my View Factor Impero/Inclino order today. I am definitely going to be going the Birger route. The View Factor unit is just too large for me to use in my set-up without substantial additional expenses.

I think that the Birger will fit the bill very nicely.

It's been fun guys. . . see you around. This has been an enormously long and torturous road, but, at least for me, I can now see light at the end of the tunnel.

Now, the only question is how long it will take for me to get my money back. I shall certainly report on that score.

Stephen

For those wondering as to the actual specs of Inclino in relation to other motors this spreadsheet. Inclino weight includes the mounting hardware. All others do not. The lens that Matthew is using is also small. We have never changed the size of the motor.

On another note the Birger mount will only allow you control over the focus and iris. Zoom will still need a motor. Be it ours or another.
