  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Impero/Birger Field Test (beta)

Impero/Birger Field Test (beta)

We're a commercial film production company based in San Diego, CA. We've just finished testing a new firmware release for the Birger/Impero combo and it's working quite well. Once the lens is painted, the marks are rock solid, even after the lenses are changed or the camera is power cycled. Pulls are smooth. The Impero is a battery muncher, but hopefully that will be improved by Curt's tweaks to production units and the ability to connect by cable to the birger mount in the future.

Here is a link to a spot we shot with the Birger/Impero combo last week:

Happy to answer questions about performance in the field.

Cheers,
JB

Nice spot. That makes me want to get some of that water. Hey if you ever need any help locally I am in Oceanside so give a shout anytime.

Nice job JB. Obviously, noise was not an issue outdoors. What was the range of the Impero? Also, what camera was that? Thanks

HA! That's a million dollar question if you get that one!

In reality i'm only seriously hoping that i may get mine before the years end. In reality this is probably to be expected...and also i will be nicely surprised if it comes before.
In the meantime i just bought the Cinevate follow focus to tie me over so i am not renting EVERY time and i will have a back up when the VF arrives:)

Hi Michael, Thanks.
it is #3059 running betav20 firmware, Birger v20 firmware (setback to 18.3.6.4 with devce control in BEI interface.
We tested it up to 50 ft without any trouble. Not sure how far it will go.

So, What is the gustimate on products actually shipping?
We are making the production fixtures today and will be running the first batch of test parts that are going to heat treating. After they come back we need to measure them and see how much they change dimensionally and then modify the toolpaths to correct for the change. After that there will be another run at the heat treating to verify that the parts come out to spec then we can do some production volumes (~25-50 sets/day). After I have a solid idea of the cycle times (Friday/Saturday) for the parts I can get a shipping schedule to everyone.

that's great to hear Curt. Any clue as to my custom power cable? Also, have you done any testing on the power draw with the new setup? I have a 12v 5 amp battery and am curious as to how long it will last. Thanks

That is still for the inclino, right?
How is the production of the impero going?

As I mentioned a few times, I have ordered both, but the impero is more critical to me...

Please, a word about the imperos...

Bow-Locks.

Imperos are fine. They are not the long pole in the tent. We sent a bunch to Erik at Birger to get a lot of the folks who have the EF mounts squared away. Most of our customers are Inclino/Impero orders and I'm not sure what percentage of them have orders in for the EF mounts. I know from here out we are delivering based off of the order that the orders were received.

On the Inclino front, we received the new tooling yesterday and are starting in on the new production fixtures this evening. I will have them ready tomorrow afternoon and we will do a run of about 5-10 sets of parts. They are going to heat treating on Monday and I'll have them back on Tuesday. After I verify that they are dimensionally correct then we will kick up production and make parts all next week. I expect to get about 100 sets of parts completed. End of business Wednesday I will have a good idea of what the machining times are and I will be able to extrapolate what that will mean for the delivery schedule.

Things are looking much better now that we have control over production. All of our tooling from overseas is on its way back and we will be making all of the parts here in the USA from now forward.

hey all just wanted to let you know that we will be posting new videos periodically our youtube account showing the progress of our production. Stay tuned

Great, Have to get an annual subscription to that channel.

Why do you think, after a few hundred broken promisses and dates, a periodical video on youtube is going to achieve anything useful? :frown2:

In any case, I suggest a time lapse ...

Question regarding Gears

Question regarding Gears

Hi Curt, John and VF team,

I was just wondering, we use a set of Zeiss Standards (T2.1), and the 50 and 85mm both extend quite lot when focussing up close. Do you have optional wider gears for lenses where either of the focus, iris or zoom rings move back and forth?

Regards,
Damien

Curt - how about the rest of us who have an EF mount and are STILL not squared away with impero??? :violin:

Update: Sent the first batch of parts to heat treating yesterday. Should have them back this afternoon. After I get the units assembled and into test I will put up another update. The tempering will make the steel parts the same hardness as the ball bearings so we will not have wear problems over the life of the motor.

Damien, We will be offering a wider gear in .8 Mod. It will not be until we get the motors shipping on a consistent schedule. I have been focusing solely on getting all issues resolved with the DFF and then I will jump onto other accessories/products.

Joe, we are working hard to support both streams of Imperos. Erik should have about half of his volumes squared away this week.
