  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

Network shows don't have a budget for a workstation capable of quickly editing R3D? I'm trying to understand the ProRes hype.

That is not the issue. Lots of workstation horsepower available to do the heavy lifting but even the fastest system adds time to your wrap when transcoding.

On board recording and rocket X on set not an option? I usually just convert via rocket X, but I know not every production will go for it though.

The main issue is that you have a 10 month season with many 14hr camera days (which don't include precalls and wrap overtime) often in remote locations. Our normal DIT wrap times are around 1hr simply to finish cloning media from 2 or more cameras and then load into the truck. Even if you were only adding 15 minutes daily at wrap to transcode r3d to Prores you still have a genny operator, first aid attendant, camera truck driver, shuttle driver to get you back to crew park, and a dailies driver at minimum still on the clock waiting for you to finish transcoding. We do use 2k gennys to help get the genny op off the clock early at times but this doesn't always make sense depending how far the truck is from set. Leaving the last few mags to include in the next days dailies is not an option either as nobody at the executive level wants to wait an extra day to see what was shot and I don't blame them. Bottom line is all this overtime is a significant cost over the course of a season.

I am aware syncing dailies and transcoding from r3d on set is easy. Done it many times over my 10 years as a DIT with my Red Rocket. (Big fan of Scratch.) It makes sense for shorter projects to do so. However small and mid-sized series needs are different than commercial, big TV series and feature needs. On Arrow we need 100% reliability with dailies (which is why we use a lab for dailies services - on set crew inevitably get ill at some point over 10 months) and dollars used for transcoding overtime are dollars I could have used to put more production value on screen. Producers are acutely aware of this so generally transcoding on set is not the preferred way to work. My apologies if I've sent this thread sideways.

To bring it back to the Mg upgrade, I'm super stoked to dig into Weapon in the new year and hopefully next season on Arrow.

Mark, you get that for free with the upgrade. I can definitely not ship yours, if you prefer :001_smile:

Does it come with a gift reciept so that i can swap it out in the store? 

Maybe you can re-gift it to a RAVEN owner?

But they pay you for shipping and handling rates, of course. '-)

There's a serious issue here though. There are a lot of people struggling to justify the cost of a weapon upgrade. I think we all know who pays for this "free" item, so Red seems cruel. Seriously, make something useful "free" instead of pissing off thousands of customers. Come on.

And a happy Friday to you as well.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of people that find it useful.

Just wishing they had included a free package with my order. Got the accessory credit but no other goodies and I'm paying a LOT of money for my new-camera Weapon purchase. Wish they would treat us buyers-of-new as well as they do upgraders. Oh well, maybe I'll get lucky the next upgrade.

Elsie, there are bundles for new WEAPON purchases as well that save you some money if you bought a la carte.

Got it Brent... but I'm good. '-)

Elsie, with only the best intent, I can understand the sentiment, but consider this...
You will forever have a number of months more than the rest of us with the ability to capture images none of us can.
Hard to place a value on that.

Cheers!

True Brian and I was only feigning complaining as a way to point out to Mark that while he is getting accessories that aren't what he would choose, he is actually being treated royally by getting FREE stuff. '-)

EDIT: To put a finer point on it, I am forever grateful to Brent, Jarred, Jim et al for extending the deadline to get in on the 8k sensor 1/2 price deal. I had to sell two Dragons to be able to make that move and couldn't have gotten things together without the deadline extension.

P.S., P.S. I put Brent's name first because Jarred refers to him as the Adult Supervision @ RED. '-)

Hi Brent, I think what Mark is trying to communicate is that its indeed a wonderful gesture from Red but when the receiver of the gift can't find an optimal use for the gift then the value drops (from the receiver's perspective). Just like the cost savings you guys passed along, I think it might be a little more understanding if you sample the opinions of the community regarding the Redvolt XL module, especially if its still in production phase where stock level isn't an issue yet. No matter how nice and valuable an iphone is, if you give your daughter an iphone instead of an ipad mini she wants because she wants to be able to enjoy her candy crush games better, she's never going to "fully"appreciate what you spent on the iphone even though its alot more expensive than what she wants. (Maybe my analogy sucks) but what I'm saying is that the community appreciates the free items but just feel the Redvolt XL module might be a little under utilize in the field.

(hope your browser is still open) :)

Yeah well last time around people couldn't give these things away.

The original quad module was not a great solution since it made the camera so long and you needed the module adapter. The XL module is a MUCH better product. I actually paid for it on the EPIC and was happy to get a free one with the upgrade.

I'm sure it's great if you want to buy Redvolt XLs.

Thousands?

I for one, need the redvolt module...its a tool, it will come in handy

Glass half full, man, half full.

Glass is never half full, nor half empty. Glass is always full. It is full of liquid of your choice and AIR. But since we don't have to pay for air (yet), we take it for granted. Sounds familiar...?
