  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

@Michael - email your Bomb Squad Rep. If Brent zips online he might be able to help.

OK, so I decided to go to the online store to reserve some upgrade goodness. My EPIC DRAGON shows OK to upgrade. My SCARLET DRAGON says not OK. Both were invoiced as DRAGON systems before the April date. It's the SCARLET DRAGON I really want to upgrade. What to do now that the office is closed, but the upgrade timing window is still open (for another few hours)?

Don't sweat it... Your post here is a good flag in the sand. It's not like at the stroke of midnight your bomsquad reps computers all turn into pumkins so worst case is we will sort you out tomorrow if not tonight

Our posts crossed in the mail. Thanks! Increases my confidence in RED (as if it could be any higher...)

not one person has answered, but its was 3 times, twice today and once about a week ago…but i can get the red ones now, but then i thought about it and maybe i wanted to keep black if now all you can get it red…so my only real question, and according to red.com, it might be that they only come in red now. true?

Yes, 512GB and 1TB are red now to indicate the faster write speeds able to keep up with the WEAPON CF line.

Thank you brent! i know you were dealing with a lot more important questions…ah decisions, decisions...

Sorry, I tried to figure this out, but it's a windy thread - what is total cost for an Epic-X Dragon upgrade (done before this year) to get to an MG Weapon if we pull the trigger tonight?

Thanks,
Tim

I'm in the same boat. Emailed my BS rep with all my info. Just posting on here as a sort of time stamp.

Thanks for the killer deal!

I was one of the folks that requested an update about a week ago. I really appreciate Jarred and Brent providing that, not to mention a $5,000 discount for MG Weapons - wow. After reading through this thread I can well see why some time passes between updates, yowsa, I guess it's true that no good deed goes unpunished.

In any case, please don't stop giving us periodic updates as competitive circumstances allow - it really is helpful.

Cheers - #19

Jarred and Brent, thank you again for your tireless efforts to make things good with your customers and maintain an open line of communication...it's really unprecedented outside of the Red organization. I'm about to hit the big red button on a Magnesium upgrade, which is now (thanks to you) a more comfortable fit within the realm of my personal finances...the price reduction and the intact accessory credit made it too good to pass up.

That said, there is still a nagging feeling in my chest that the CF specs are where the true weapon is at and where much of the demand will be in my little corner of the world...so I'm still looking at making a switch. There have been a few mentions of upping the ante and putting CF boards/specs within a Mg framework. Is this something you would actually do for someone? I know the CF stands out a bit, but I feel like there must be a slight edge in durability that comes with an Mg body, like it could take a few more scrapes and dings without being any worse for wear. And frankly, there's something about the all-black body that is very appealing to me...full-on stealth mode, all the modules melding into one fluid body of cinema capture goodness. I was originally reluctant to ask because it seems like you guys are always bending over backwards to answer questions and help people out, not to mention deal with a pain in the ass request here and there, so I wouldn't want such a request to be yet another for you to field. But if this is something that can be accomplished without much trouble on your end, how might one go about it? A phone call and a bottle of your respective favorite whiskeys? In fact, what are your favorite bottles? I feel like we should all be writing this down regardless, as we've all found ourselves in your good favor now and again, which shouldn't go unnoticed.

Many thanks,
Clint

Will upgrade our two cameras to Mg, taking advantage of this discount and also the accessory credit!

Saving $3-5k by using aluminum inside is fine by me

I got the first 512gb minimags, the black ones, are they at the same speed as the red ones? Even if not, they will work with MG at least?

From what I can tell by the specs alone, the only real difference is that the CF can do 4K ProRes 422, but both can do 2K ProRes 444. Also you get heavier LUT support on the CF, but in my mind (colorist mind) LUTs are a bit unnecessary since everything's going through grade anyway. The only reason I could think of that makes CF at almost the double price, is that it's lighter and eligible for the 8K sensor upgrade. Other than that you get mostly the same out of the MG AND it's eligible for the next generation sensor upgrade, whenever that happens. If you aren't going to go 8K now, I don't see a reason for CF really. And what do we know about the next gen sensor, it might be the Dragon field of view at 9 or 10K, no one knows for sure. I mean, didn't the Epic-MX get new boards when upgrading to Dragon? Meaning the MG might get faster whenever a new sensor is around, to enable 8K in it.

I also have the first round of black 512GB and 1TB MINI-MAGs, yes they are "fast".

The biggest differences between Forged/Woven Carbon Fiber and Magnesium Weapon are:

Forged/Woven Weapon 6K:
- Brain weight = 3.3lbs
- 4K ProRes 422 HQ @ 29.97fps
- 2K ProRes 4444 XQ @ 120fps
- Data Transfer Rate 300MB/s
- Supports up to 33x33x33 3D LUTs
- Boards and Brain directly support 8K upgrade

Magnesium Weapon 6K:
- Brain weight = 3.35lbs
- 2K ProRes 4444 XQ @ 60fps
- Data Transfer Rate 225MB/s
- Supports up to 17x17x17 3D LUTs
- Will require board (maybe body?) upgrade to support 8K

For MgW - Only boards need to be upgraded for 8K as Brent said earlier. And I presume for 4K ProRes also.

Then I'm more sure that everyone with an MG won't feel "left behind" the CFs. If the MGs are eligible for 8K in some future upgrade path I believe that the MG is the best deal to get on track with the future of Red. The CF seems to be more luxury than a need for most right now. Heck, even the Epic Dragon will manage well for years to come. I'm very happy to be on the MG track, even more so compared to the CF. As long as the my camera doesn't get in contact with 632 degrees celsius and explodes in a white burning light I will be fine :tongue_smilie:

The CF can do much lower compression. That was the key factor for me to go CF. CF is also the most affordable way to get to 8K as well.
