  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

I like how people just call Epic Dragons 'Dragons' because the image quality has quickly made a name for itself set apart from the original Epic, which is what people used to say 'shooting it on an Epic'.

I'm sure in time people will be saying 'Yeah shooting it on the Weapon' or particularly 'on the Weapon 8K' and making a point of it.

Nobody here will be offended if you guys call the Weapon "Epic-W" . Happy to even make Epic-W logo coins for those that would prefer that instead of the Stealth Weapon logo coins.
Getting confused about the line up, thought the camera line up from RED is Raven, Scarlet, Epic, Weapon. Is Weapon being placed as the new evolution of Epic Dragon coz that's what Epic Weapon seems to suggest. My assumption (if not mistaken that I read it in one of your past post on the subject) is that, Epic as much as Weapon, and Scarlet (and now Raven) will retain the "camera class" nomenclature + sensor generation name hence Epic MX, Epic Dragon, and the next Epic ...., Right now Weapon Dragon logo coin might actually be 'W-Dragon". Just an observation

The Weapon is certainly at a price that has put owning it out of the question for me. Completely okay with that, it's the top of the range VV monster. It seems to me, and hey correct me people who know more, but with the competition the way it is now people are expecting more and more from their cameras. Weapon is servicing the very top of the line high end feature film and commercial world predominantly... maybe music videos too and extravagent docos or something. The Raven to me has sort of replaced what the Scarlet used to be, the cheaper option only it is an incredibly capable camera on it's own. 4.5k 60fps 8:1, 4.5k 120fps 13:1. Whoa. So I think the new Scarlet-W will be something between what the scarlet dragon and epic dragon were but with all the benefits of the new body and in line with the specs people are pushing for / expecting these days and being competitive with other manufacturers. I expect RED to be more expensive than an equivalent spec'd camera (except for Arri) but I love the image and RedCode. When they eventually bring us something with built in ND's I'll be like TAKE MY MONEY!!!

The name is fine, the world is not. The camera is totally awesome don't change the name.. Red has always had an "arsenal" cameras "shoot" images, the red brand has always been "tactical" I'm sure boat loads of money and hours have gone into marketing this branding..IMO start selling to the military :) maybe a super huge GoV contract can get us cheaper cameras !! Haha :)

if there is something I've learned with these horrific incidents we have been seeing more and more, it makes no sense to react in ways that limit an everyday persons freedoms, it's certainly has nothing to do with RED...
maybe time for some SUPER amazing Documentary by red users on the subject of violence as it lives in the world shot on "WEAPON"

There is a downside risk in wrapping your brand in an aggressive, paramilitary vocabulary. Some creative folk aren't going to be down with the concept of using a tool of violence to create their art. I myself do not care - but can certainly see how it can become an issue.

Yesterday night we pulled the trigger for the Weapon Magnesium! E-mailed our bomb squad and had everything settled down in a few minutes! We are prod to have a run and gun setup of this quality! Red reps are real warriors!

Pat

PS: who speaks about paramilitary vocabulary? Lol

RED knows that their primary market is young males who dress in black, wear large silver jewelry, have a tattoo, play COD and have a shrine to Chris Kyle in their living room. ;-)

Exactly. I like to go against the attack on freedom, so I'm actually more in love with the name than I was before now that stupid bullshit like this is happening.

My 1st AC is female and is a rock star ask her what she thinks of weapon and she says "dope".

The last director I worked with drives a Prius, drinks apple vinegar, and makes art all day.. When I showed him the "weapon" he was like oh man that is so "cool"
I understand your point, but I don't think a producer is gonna give a rats ass what the thing is called as long as they make their days and stay in budget

oh no, not the name thing again!

I am always of the opinion that these guys bust their tails to make us great technology and are therefore entitled to have a little fun naming their creations, just as we sometimes have a little fun naming our cameras. It should be something that resonates for the creators. I can name my personal cameras whatever I want. My first two RED ONEs were "Eagle" and "Hawk." I haven't named my Epic or Scarlet. Maybe I'll name my Weapon "Peace" and my Raven "Tranquility," just to shift the karma around a little bit.

And as long as bean counting Producers are making the camera decisions then there is no issue. If, however, there are some International creative folks who don't find the appeal in a gungho American guns 'n ammo, blow shit up vibe . . . then you might lose a sale or two. More than likely RED has done the math and found that the assault rifle vernacular appeals to more buyers than it turns off. Personally, I think RED makes the coolest looking stuff out there . . . but overreaches with the naming convention. As subtle as a jackhammer it is

Red already does business with the military. Jim was selling them Oakleys long before Red existed. Some of us even got cheaper cameras already by buying "Battle-Tested" Epic-M Dragons that were returned by the military.

Please Dear God in the heavens above, send me a battle tested weapon EVF for Christmas, please and thank you!

Yeah, that describes me perfectly, LOL...

Young is the key word here. The old guard, as I call them, grew up shooting Arri. The next generation who grew up shooting on RED will shoot RED the remainder of their careers. I know I will. RED gave us cinema cameras that were within reach (and still do) when no other camera manufacturer would. That's not some thing that is forgotten.

Anyone concerned with offending the easily offendable could probably circumvent that by referring to their camera as the Weapon series Dragon. That is, dilute the potentially offensive term with other descriptors.
