  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

But the base package of the upgrade seem to have the top handle and I don't believe that will be able to work with a v-lock plate on the back. The thing is that if I get all this, I need to re-buy stuff in order for me to work with my current gear. As of now, I have the +1adapter module with the quickplate module and those place the battery close to the handle. If the camera body is shorter on the Weapon, the battery won't be able to be mounted while the top handle is on. Thing is that you say there are multiple types of battery solutions including v-lock, but I already have three red bricks, a charger and I do not plan to use any other battery solution than what I got, that's just not within my economy. So what will happen with the included gear for the weapon? Will I need to just sell them since I won't be using the battery mount now included?

I also have a third party PL mount which I'm not sure is like the first Red PL mount or not, which means, I don't know if it will work. Likewise with the DSCM.

I think you can swing the handle around 180 deg and have it pointing forward then the bricks will not get in the way...

Hi Christoffer

If you go WEAPON or RAVEN, you're going to have to buy some new stuff. There's no getting around that. ...but there are solutions that will get you where you want to go if you're willing to compromise...

You mean compromise down batteries to worthless ones that drain within less than half the time of a v-lock battery? That's not the compromise this upgrade should be about.

Right now, it just feels like the Accessory credit is there to "fix" a broken base package.

OK, wow. We are giving you money back for your existing camera. Which means, we are giving you a full kit for $14,000 out of pocket that will retail for over $30K PLUS a $5000 accessory credit - and this is a "fix" like we are screwing you over? If you don't want all the free AKS with the Mg WEAPON upgrade package, I will gladly ship the brain by itself. Or...

Battery Belt Clip gives you flexible option to put RED Bricks in a variety of locations. Clipped to your belt. Clipped to a tripod. $325. Leaves you $4675 to spare and you can use your REDVOLT XL Module as a door stop.

I have tried to be really patient over the past week, answering questions that are already posted in this thread or on RED.com. But this pushes me over the edge. I am by no means "required" to be on REDUSER as part of my job. I am going back to my day job now.

I guess you don't see the pic. Ugh!

"Whining that getting free gear..."? The thing is that I was promised by a Red rep at a camera event just two weeks ago that the accessory credit will stay so that if I buy the upgrade a year from now I will still have it. So, now I read today that as of after tomorrow that won't happen. It was the main reason I rushed the Dragon upgrade and got onto the tracks. I have very little money left for all this and I'm forced to compress all my economical planning to within the next 24 hours instead of the next 12 months. So, yes, I have questions, I'm not "whining". If you read my question, I was only asking since I don't know if that PL mount is like the first Red PL mount or not, if so I could sell it right now instead of making it obsolete later. Some of us aren't made of money, we need to plan for things like this and right now we are forced to make a decision because there hasn't been any emails about this change or anything other than this confusing thread.

I think the extra credit was first a NAB only thing then they extended it, and now they put on some more time. so if thats the case, then yes, you are looking in the mouth of a given horse and question if it has good good teeth, in a way... no? :)

Sorry, didn't mean to upset, it's just that I'm in panic mode here since what I was promised by a Red representative two weeks ago is not gonna happen. So all my planning decisions need to be made right at this moment and I haven't looked over any of the gear options or what will happen to everything I've been collecting for the past year. If I do this wrong it could end up really bad for me.

If you have a PL, we want to see it. First gen PL mounts are not compatible with WEAPON, so we need to test it.

So what happens if we do have a 1st Gen PL Mount? If we do, will we have to buy a new mount or can the mount be upgraded?

If the design of a handle is holding up the $9k purchase of a $30K+ system, wow.

I'm sure there will many 3rd party versions from WC and others if you hate it that much.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The $5,000 accessory credit is an amazing deal - kudos to RED for doing it in the first place.

That being said -- if RED found a way to manufacture the cameras for cheaper (replacing more expensive components with cheaper components - more power to them!) - then why is the accessory credit affected by it? Why? I am not whining (not one bit - I know the credit was extremely generous in the first place and I also know no other company would have offered it). But once offered, why take it back?

The cost saving is there because of the cheaper components. RED is passing the savings onto the customer, which is the fair, correct thing to do.

Apologies, but I do not think taking the accessory credit back is fair. RED is manufacturing a cheaper camera (great!) but they are charging basically the same price at the end of the day because they are taking back the credit they offered in the first place.

As Brent stated it as well earlier in the thread, this makes things complicated as hell. I'm on Reduser constantly, I pay attention and I am still confused and lost track of all possible permutations. They are so many. Plus, I've spoken to a few friends today who own Epic Dragons and they were completely unaware of the Wednesday deadline. They don't come here every day. It's unfair to them to not be aware of this important development.

I think RED should keep the accessory credit since they offered it in the first place. They are replacing expensive components with cheaper ones, saving manufacturing costs and passing it to us. This doesn't suddenly justify (in my mind) not honoring an offer they originally made.

Hope I'm not stepping over the line here. Love RED but let's keep things clean and simple and fair. SO MANY PEOPLE are not even aware of the Wednesday deadline.

My two cents.

It's not only the handle, will there be a v-lock plate that's attached to the camera like the quick release? All changes to how the camera operates on set have ramifications on every other piece of gear. I'm sorry that my questions stir up emotions, but I literary don't have time to go over everything before pulling the plug. It's still a cost and there's still a balance between keeping my current system or going for weapon. It's not a 9K buy of a 30K system, because you already own an Epic Dragon, which is worth a lot, I'm giving up that camera for this and with it I loose a lot of gear that I cannot use anymore and which might have lost most of it's value just a few months after purchase.

It might be small money for some, but it's still a lot of money to put out into a system, especially since you already own a working one. Before this day I wasn't even sure to go with Weapon since it was way over my budget. Right now, I'm in a decision to either get it, or never get it. It's not an easy one and I'm not really fine with people picking on me because of this hard decision. Some people seem to have unlimited money supply, I don't.

Let me get this straight. As of last week, W Mg Upgrade was $34,500 retail plus $5000 Accessory Credit. Now, in two days, it will be $29,500 with no credit. So, instead of the $5000 credit you were "promised", you get $5000, in effect, in cash? I would think most people would take cash off price versus credit. If they had a choice.

Now, all existing orders get BOTH reduction and credit, with option to buy until EOD and get them both as well.

So, I would not be too hard on that rep. The deal now is better than what he promised you.

At NAB, April 2015, RED clearly stated that the Accessory Credit wouldn't last forever. They've been pretty vocal about that nearly weekly since then.

Where have you been? ET announced ther V-mount battery module way back at NAB (https://elementtechnica.com/product/w-v-mount-battery-module/) and some have already shipped out. WC has also said they will have direct power one too that will cost a little less.

That means additional cost. The accessory credit were meant to cover changes with the gear you have, so I'd rather hope Red makes their own weapon update to the quickplate module. Also, as I mentioned, the top handle will probably not work with that since the Red Bricks will probably not fit together with the top handle.

They offered as a perk/incentive for people to upgrade or buy new cameras within a certain time period. It's no different than any other company offering a "deal" on an item where if you buy in a certain time period you get "x" free. Heck, I didn't even realize they were still offering it. I thought it was just during NAB that it was offered. So RED has been wayyyy more the generous in offering deal for as long as they have.

As with any upgrades, there are always additional costs. $900 isn't that much when you are spending $14k. Does it suck some? Sure. I figure I will spend an extra $2k-$3k over the upgrade to upgrade everything I need to. But $16-17k for a new camera system is pretty cheap.

Doubtful that RED will make their own since they own ET now. Considering the other plates they made, it wouldn't be any cheaper. However, I am not sure why the ET plates aren't for sale in the RED store. It would be nice.

Did you see my post above where you can buy a battery belt clip for only $325 of your $5000 credit? And also the post showing how what your rep said a week ago is now a better deal for you?
