  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tom Lowe...

I think Tamarack is open, but I'm not 100% sure.

Kennan/Tom, is it really necessary to flaunt your adventures in my face? I mean, photography/videography sessions up and down the entire west coast? Look up 'jealous' in the dictionary and you'd see a picture of me, arms crossed and brow furrowed.

Ha! Yes, to an outside observer Tom seems to be some billionaire who just wakes up, fires up the Epic and about ten million dollars worth of glass, wades into a lake and spends the day shooting.
Tom, seriously, how do you do it, man?? The lowly working man wants to know... :)

Ha! I guarantee that 95% of Redusers here have more money in the bank than I do. The trick for me is, I don't care about money, I only care about getting shots. Somehow this has actually worked out, and somehow the gear always shows up right when I need it. My friends, sponsors and collaborators have provided me with all my gear. I don't own anything.

The DR is amazing !
Love your work Tom.

Had a great morning filming a river at sunrise. The Master Prime flares were to die for coming through those trees! Shot the whole SSD at 96fps. It went pretty quick!

Give 'er, Tom.

This is my new "ultra-light-weight" Epic setup, including Redvolts and a tiny cheeseplate from Wooden camera that holds the handle and LCD.

Gonna test this setup tonight and will report back how it all works.

Yes, David, I use clip-on MBs with 4x5 filters.

Seems like maybe 15 or 20 minutes, shooting 96fps full sensor. I forgot to measure it. The problem is, I like to let my camera idle for long periods, as I am waiting for light, or something to happen, or just fooling around with the framing or moves, and these Redvolts are losing power % even with the camera just idling. You can see the % ticking away. I've gotten spoiled by these 150wh v-locks, where I can just leave my camera running or idling for long periods. I'm going to keep the camera in this ultra-light config with Redvolts for a couple days and see how I like it.

Here's a photo of my cousin Mike operating the Epic tonight in the new ultra-light config.

God I can't wait for this camera... LOVE that stripped down configuration. Who knew a small thing like that could shoot 5k FF 96fps...

I like that little cheeseplate set-up - I've been using the Wooden Camera top mount prototype and, while it is light and has advantages, it is a little undercooked. The wedge system for holding the plate in place doesn't work all that well. But it was very inexpensive and weighs very little so no complaints. Will the handle be in the way of your monitor, with this latest set-up? It doesn't seem as if you can take advantage of rotating the LCD.

I would really like a wrench-free way to mount and dismount the LCD. I think that would really complete a fast, light, mobile set-up - hoping that Jarred presents us one in the "RED Accessories" thread this week.

I ran the camera very heavy during a feature film project and have a nature doc project coming up, where I've been trying to strip it down and re-build it in the most elemental way. The only thing about this system that I haven't found to my taste is the lack of a quick-release for the LCD. Sometimes I leave it attached, but that feels awkward and isn't a good solution.

I'm still thinking RED batts are going to remain the best solution for most applications - the RED Volts will be great for some things - and probably outstanding once the DSMC is fully functional for stills. But I like a little more battery life for doc work.

Looking forward to your report. It's been great to follow this thread, when I can.

Have you been able to do much testing of the timelapse functions?

On a tiny cheeseplate from Wooden camera can be placed Element Technica's new RED LCD QR (Quick Release) Kit

that allows you to connect/disconnect the RED Touchscreen LCD to/from the Wooden camera cheeseplate as quickly as you can push the button.

Also you can attach only the female V-lock at the cheeseplate and it will work.

Not to hijack Tom's thread, but I've looked at all of the QR mounts for the RED LCDs which I could find, and the base of the mounting structure for the EPIC LCD is different from the RED ONE LCD, it's multi-screw, not single screw (though you could use a single screw, it's not that stable). I'm hesitant to buy any of the RED ONE QR systems for an EPIC without seeing them actually used/applied to an EPIC LCD. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
