  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tom Lowe...

Will the handle be in the way of your monitor, with this latest set-up? It doesn't seem as if you can take advantage of rotating the LCD.

The LCD rotates just fine with this setup. I just need to tilt it slightly to make it go around the handle.

One bummer is that I just received the new 2" LCD cable, but it is about 1/2" too short to reach around to the monitor :( If I turned the monitor around it would work, but would then bang into my handle.

Also Tom, if you mount the handle to go forward over the lens then you could have the LCD in front of it and not have anything blocking the LCD. Shifting the weight forward anyway since the lenses tend to make the cam tip forward a touch. The Wooden CAm Easy Plate is awesome we use it constantly.

This is my new "ultra-light-weight" Epic setup, including Redvolts and a tiny cheeseplate from Wooden camera that holds the handle and LCD.

Gonna test this setup tonight and will report back how it all works.

Tom,

How much weight has your "ultra-light-weight" Epic setup?

Is it about 13-14 lbs or approximately 6kg included Epic body (5lbs), SSD slot, SSD drive, Titanium mount, side handle, REDVoltx1, REDMote, top handle, top+bottom plates and Carl Zeiss MP 16mm lens (4.8 lbs)?

I'm not sure. I need to take the "ultra- light" to a grocery store and weigh it ;)

Hi Tom, is that the Giottos ball head on your CineSlider or something else? How does it handle the weight of the Epic in this configuration?

Hey Tom, we have something called the Easy Stick coming out this week that will let you put the lcd on the operator side while keeping the handle in the middle. Here is a quick iPhone snap. They are off being anodized right now.

Look how tiny the camera is compared to my hand. This camera is insane.

I'm starting to really love this new ultra-light-weight configuration! So far the batteries aren't much of an issue.

I had some kind of crazy problem this evening. I think I might have pushed a wrong button or something, because all of a sudden I could not roll. When I pressed roll, instead of a red dot appearing to indicate that I was rolling, a yellow dot appeared, and the timecode numbers turned yellow instead of red. I quickly called a friend at Red. I had to restore default settings in the Maintenance tab, and that fixed the problem. Apparently I had somehow triggered some kind of pre-roll function. Anyone had this happen?

In any case, I have to think that Steadicam guys are gonna be in freekin heaven with this camera. It's such a dream come true in such a small package.

One thing I have been considering lately is trying to add a follow-focus motor. I need something incredibly simple, though. maybe a motor that can mount to 3-inch carbon rods under the lens or something? any suggestions? I want to keep my configuration super, super simple and light.

Hey Tom, I've had the same thing happen. Instead of red dot when I hit record it displays a yellow dot and the fan speed goes into jet blast mode. It happened fairly consistently if I left the cam on idling for a bit. At the suggestion of the guys at Chater Camera I switched the fan mode from auto mode to manual mode and that seemed to fix it. Tomorrow is my first production day since the problem, so hopefully it's fixed

If it happens again, reset default settings in maintenance tab. Don't take a chance on this.

Which firmware are you on?

I think I am on the one before the current one.

Lol that assumes I'm on a decent computer... Hahaha.

I'm lost somewhere in the mountains. No way I can get logs to you.

get me the build number instead...

Kaya mentioned this might have to do with the half press preset hotkey.
Try disabling that.

This happened to me tonight too. Not sure what I pressed but it locked me out. Had to force power down (disconnect battery) and re-start, then reboot. I'm on whatever firmware the M ships with.

Really glad I read this thread today before going out with the cam.

It is pretty easy to see what firmware the camera has and it is really helpful if you would post it.
