  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After more than a year of asking and begging everyone I know, I finally got my hands on a 16mm Master Prime! :) This thing is just deadly on the Epic!

Filming water elements at Yosemite today. The first shot is a Kessler Pocket Jib on Manfrotto 536 sticks.

On the setup right before the last photo, I slipped on some moss and damn near went into the river with the Epic! Kinda scary. I'm trying to be careful, but the water calls to me. :)

Epic performing flawlessly! Having a little trouble with the Redmote, but hopefully the firmware update will solve that. I'm gonna update when I get home in 2 days.

Okay, well here is a framegrab from Mono Lake. This shit looks amazing at 96fps!! Shot on the Duclos 11-16. Thanks, Matt!

A photo of my assistant Dr. Kanab operating the motorized CineSlider. Z-Axis move, as always.

I have been going over more of the footage I shot in the last 10 days or so, and I am simply blown away by the quality!!! Jim and everyone at Red, you guys are my hero!

With the Master Prime on this camera, it compares favorably to 65mm 5-perf film, in my opinion. I can tell you with certainty that there are now major IMAX films in production mixing Epic footage with 65mm 15-perf IMAX footage, and the Epic footage is winning over converts!

Check out this screengrab of 8-year-old M'so Jones climbing at Yosemite. Keep in mind that this was shot at 96fps at 12:1 compression, and it looks AMAZING in motion, even at 1/4 resolution! Please disregard the lack of color correction.

Here is a BTS photo showing how I did this shot, taken by my buddy Shawn Reeder:

I think it's a standard Hoodman 7", which I previously used on my MX and 7" Red LCD. I need to get a pair of scissors, though, and shave off about half of its depth, so I can touch the screen easier. The only downside to the Epic touchscreen LCD, in my opinion, is that it glares a lot. Sometimes difficult to see when shooting outdoors.

VERY HARD to use the touchscreen LCD outdoors IMO....hence asking which hood you are using. I seemed to like my older RED LCD for shooting outdoors vs. the new touchscreen. I must say you have it well setup for light-weight use....well done sir.

You might be correct, Ketch. :) I cannot remember clearly.

Hey Tom, don't know if you have been asked this and answered earlier, but was wondering if you have tried the Epic on night shots..... IE... Star fields. say iso800 to 1000 and 20 second exposures to see how it compares with DSLR work??? For your time lapse work...
Very curious.

So last night, with help from director Kevin Kerslake, I got my Epic & Kessler Pocket Jib five feet behind Skrillex, with a sea of about 100,000 in the crowd in front of him. Murder was committed at 120 frames per second!

Getting tons of crowd shots at 96 and 120 fps.

Russ, the Epic is not configured for long exposure just yet.

Unfortunately time lapse features right now are not a priority for Red Co., according with Deanan.

You can already do timelapse.
There's more timelapse capability to still be added but there are priorities ahead of those features.

I'm locked and loaded for EDC Vegas.

Hi Tom, I'm loving this compact setup you have here, it looks like the perfect EPIC-M travel bag with your lenses and everything in it. Can you share with us what kind of bag is it, or some similar in sizes you can recommend? Thanks man!

That is a pretty cool quick travel kit for the camera and a basic lens setup. Just like a stills pkg.
Would the epic work on a lighter tripod system than most of us are use to... AKA Video 20's??? Or is it still pretty heavy when you get your lens and batt all on that dovetail?

I get the not a priority yet.... but Im sure there are a lot of projects/larger movies that would love to have the ability to use Epic in stop motion or some form of time lapse.
It will do the same as the RED 1 right now?
Or maybe a better Q&A would be what are the TL capability or prolong shutter abilities of the Epic now. 1 sec exposures in movie mode????
Just wanting to have some great dreams of what I might be able to do when mine arrives.
I also use a fair amount of very long shutter work for some projects.

That looks like great fun!

That bag is a Tamrac 9 series. I love it. I use the 8 series for my Canon gear.

Well, we wrapped EDC Vegas last night. All I can say is, WTF!!??! I had an awesome time and I think I got some great shots!

On perhaps an interesting note, I shot the entire festival, 3 nights and half a terabyte of data, at 96 frames per second and up! About 1/4 was shot at 4K 120 fps! I could not have done this without Master Primes. They really paid off.
